"good" ending is the one with Miku being the only survivor. there are 2 sacrifices for the gates, so they can stay sealed. "bad bad" ending is where Mafuyu and Miku leave, and Kirie is reunited with her lover. Kirie is supposed to give up everything to ensure the gate is closed, but her lover was the cause the ritual failed in the first place. WIth her lover there, the gates will fail again.

The Photograph ending is definitely the best one. It's so beautiful and well done and is a perfect ending to this story. I just wish they'd had enough money to make it fully CGI like they were able to with Promise on 2's Xbox version...

Yeah, but to be honest Miku didn't just come there for nothing, it's not like she fought all those ghosts and worked hard to get to him, only to find he isn't coming back. She freed Kirie, she used the holy mirror and saved her, so now she has put things right, and yes, it's so good that Mafuyu stayed with Kirie, because otherwise she would forever be in pain, and she would never deserve that...

First ending is my favorite...... half happy, half sad. Kinda the way I prefer horror games to end. This is Fatal Frame, not Final Fantasy!! Still, I just feel leaving her there wouldn't be right.

@sakura12grete Fatal mode is harder. Ending 2: They escape & leave Kirie alone. Ending 3: They escape & leave Kirie alone but Mafuyu's last life shows up & stays with her (see 08:21 )

I'm still curious what happens if you just release the forces of hell. I mean, the Malice was basically out already in this game, right? No real issues arose except localised deaths and ghosts. And half of that was due to Kirie being emotionally damaged enough to get possessed. What happens if you don't murder any innocent girls in barbaric evil rituals, and simply open the gates and leave the area?

Malice would only attached itself to the next worst thing. Remember that Kirie was raised in a specific way so as not to have any attachment to the outside world. Any other host for the Malice would do far worse damage and maybe on a larger scale.

if he stays with her, the whole thing repeats again. The first time it failed because Kirie needed to give up everything in her life, but she couldn't give up her love. Now, what's going to happen if she has her lover there? that's why the ending where mafuyu dies is the good ending, because he gives up everything to seal the doors.

the one where they both leave, and Kirie reunite with her lover is considered the "happy" ending, because everybody gets the person they love. THAT's what caused the original ritual to fail. Kirie wanted a happy life. The original ending where Miku leaves alone is the good ending because it ensures the gates are closed

I love the 3rd ending it's like a happy ending, they live and reunited together.

Number 3 is best because Miku can save her brother and Kiria gets her lover back

She wasn't brought back to life, her soul was simply cleansed of the Malice.

I liked ending #2 and #3 but in the second ending it kinda sounded like Mafuyu was trying to guilt trip Miku because he followed her instead of staying with Kirie. But the third ending was good too because everybody wins and is happy. :D

The little gate thing remind of Persona 3 the answer with Minato giving up his life to keep the gate closed

In the second ending Mafuyu left her to suffer forever! D:> But really i guess i have two opinions.....one is that it would be great if he could stay with her, but i guess now that miku doesn't have her mother anymore it would be great for her to still have her brother...Kirie is a strong girl and i think that because she knows its her duty that she will be able to hold those doors together, i think she will eventually not be bothered by the pain, knowing it would be for a good cause...

Seriously,Mafuyu...I didn't get molested by that fucking long armed ghost and stalked by a fucking broken neck for nothing!

I feel like I have been ripped off because they wouldn't or couldn't animate the best ending. It seriously blows. So I consider the one where her brother stays with Kirie the good one because at least Kirie won't be alone.

It's set up that way as being the true ending because of how you have to be willing to work super hard to see it. It was likely planned for the PS2 version but was scrapped for time like Promise in 2 was. With how it's set up and how it gives a more complete understanding of the characters it was likely intended to be the true ending and is true to the Normal ending because of it. An after credits scene is all it needed.

Kirie's story kinda makes me want to cry.

damit, i think the damn master's spirit should have had to keep the gate close. Then Kerie could rest in peace, Mafuyu wouldn't DIE, and Miku would have something to friggin show for.

Not me, Kirie was the only victim in this game, her life was just suffering, she could not get love, she died sacrified in a horrible way.Mayufu did the right desicion.

I agree he did make the right decision based on the information he had. It's a test amount to his good character. However the photo ending tragically shows that Kirie's love comes back for after the cave in which means that Mafuyu sacrificed himself for nothing. Kirie gets a happy ending no matter what becaus it reveals that happens off screen in the normal and nightmare endings which is most likely why Mafuyu looks at Miku so sadly in that one cutscenes in 3.

I didn't play the other two fatal frames, and I'm wondering if this one ever branched off to the other games and if so which ending was canonized? Plus since watching this scared the crap out of me I'm thinking of getting it.

It seems like the last one is the happiest, but unfortunately also the most rushed.

How do I get the 'Fatal' mode in Fatal Frame 1? I finished it about 5 times, normal and nightmare included and got all 3 outfits for Miku, but I didn't get the Fatal mode =( Can't find something about a Fatal mode in Fatal Frame on google too =(

These were SO different from the PS endings... at least I don't remember all that Mafuyu dialogue being in the PS2 ending...

Mafuy is a (well, insert something ugly and describing here). I mean, come on! In te first ending he was gonna leave his sister all alone, just so he could be with Kirie, a dead woman! And in the second ending he's all "Oh well, Kirie has to stay there.. To bad we couldn't do anything about it, huh?"

yeh, I think the saddest ones are the "best" ones. The uber sappy happy are X-Box only.... dunno why they are happy since the "happy" part ensures everything will repeat all over again.

Journey? He just went there for a bit and got possessed until the end of the game, just to die again. Probably irrelevant by now haha

actually as I remember, the canonical ending is Mafuyu stays with Kirie and left Miku get out alone, so Mafuyu's soul was taken away by Kirie.. I take it as Mafuyu has die :) that's my opinion :D

Xbox... wow nice ending, just take a part of first cutscene, and put some pictures from gameplay... it's like turn off the titanic movie, after the scene where they staying at front of the ship, and then kissing, and shows some photo from the begining of the film: 'and then they come back, The end.'| Of corse stay with Kirie is the best choice, at least they won't alone, before they to start annoy each other xD.. So world can sleep at least for 4-5 year :)

i just start playing seriously for ps2 version of fatal frame(project zero) using emulator at pc so based on comment first ending is the general ending, can be related with fatal frame 3 second ending is the nightmare difficulty ending, where it is suck and horrible (my own opinion) third ending only available on xbox which is for me best ending(happily ever after blablabla) but somehow does not related with fatal frame 3 eh
