A man found dead after his car crashed into a house in suburban Auckland today may have had a heart attack, police say.
Inspector Matt Rogers said the car ran into the house in Sandringham Rd, Mt Roskill about 11.30am today.
A male witness told nzherald.co.nz they saw the driver slumped over at a pedestrian crossing as the car proceeded to swerve and weave, hitting two other cars before finally coming to rest in the Sandringham property.
A female off-duty police officer was lucky to avoid injury having just left her parked car moments before the heart attack victim collided with it, before crashing through a side fence and coming to a stop.
Police and ambulance officers tried to revive the man at the scene but could not do so.
The driver, in his 40s, was found dead at the scene and initial investigations suggested it was not the impact which killed him.
"It would appear that he was suffering from a medical condition and he didn't die from injuries."
Mr Rogers said the house had a fair degree of damage.
Police were still at the scene at 2pm.
