I always make my own hummus. I toast 2 tablespoons of raw sesame seeds for each recipe (don't burn if you do start over). In a vitamix blender, add the toasted sesame seeds, 1 can of chickpeas with the liquid, and 1 can chickpeas drained, reserving the extra liquid in case you need a little more. Also add 1 teaspoon Cumin powder, 1 teasp garlic granuals, 1 teasp onion granules, 1/2 teasp chili powder, 1/2 teasp smoked paprika, and 1/4 teasp cayenne pepper powder. Also, add the juice of one lemon (about 2 tablespoons). Use the tapper on your vitamix blender. Add more bean liquid when needed. Only do one batch at a time, or you will need to use a food processor.

Nice hummus recipe. Do the toasted sesame seeds purée when you blend everything, or does it stay whole? Is it better to grind up the sesame seeds first before blending? Also, do you think raw sesame seeds will work or is it recommended to toast it first? Thank you for any reply.

Handy tip - Blend the seeds (I add a couple cloves of garlic) in a small amo of water first. It mulches them up completely, no chunks. Then you can continue with the other ingredients.

I have come to prefer squeezing an orange over my salad, and using the remainder of the orange in the salad. That's usually all I do, but if I want to substitute for the mouth feel of oil, I use "aqua faba" or ghe cooking water from cooking garbanzo beans with kombu. Either Eden brand or my own home cooked. I like the pressure cooked beans, and use some of the beans in the salad. Use the aqua faba as you would oil. Enjoy.

I eat about 15-18% fat on average and 70% carbs and feel good on it. Allows some nuts, seeds, soy, and the occasional avocado. Trying to keep fat at 10% or under like some in the WFPB community recommend would result in me making food choices not on the nutritional merits of the food but on macronutrient percentages.

I’m firmly convinced I don’t need more than five grams of fat per day. I listened to Nathan Pritikin talk about maybe only needing a half-gram of fat daily to maintain health. Then I switched my diet to around 3-5lbs of steamed cabbages (sometimes broccoli) and 3-3.5lbs sweet potatoes and sometimes tomato paste salsa with beans and i now find it INCREDIBLY easy to keep very trim. I used to take ground flax but after checking with Cronometer (with stunning precision), it seems the vegetables provide me with all the Omega 3 fatty acids I need - yesterday I had 1.2g Omega 3 and 1.3g Omega 6. A few months ago I ate a third of a pound of mixed nuts and my face swelled up. I’m staying off these fats. It seems the vegetables have them. The vegetables also fill you up at 150 calories per pound. The sweet potatoes provide a powerful, long-lasting energy and bring me to full strength. Cabbages. Potatoes. Sometimes beans and tomato paste with lime. Gonna go live my life now. The fats seem to be over rated. Less is more. I keep a banana or two on me when I’m out and about but I only have them if I need them after using the Hawaiian or Japanese sweet potato I keep on me. Keeping the fat under 4% of my calories feels the best. When I need a treat or something that’s basically cake - I have oatmeal with steamed, shredded carrots and cinnamon. That’s the worst thing I’ll eat.

After several years doing a deep dive into many wfpb minds (and there are quite a few) I've come to the conclusion that macronutrients do matter but not in the way some seem to promote. Some in the wfpb community advocate for a "high carb" diet implying that fats and protein's take care of themselves as long as we focus on carbs. Fats and protein are important in their own right, even if they comprise a smaller percentage of calories. I don't like the way the importance of protein is underplayed and fat is marginalized if not demonized by some wfpb advocates. No one person has all the answers and some are clinging to old research and personal biases. It's important to glean information from a number of legitimate sources. Recently I've been learning a lot from Simon Hill's podcast, the Proof, a comprehensive and objective take on nutritional science.

All animal fats are dense in all the vitamins that we need. For instance, a steak has every nutrient a human needs. Veggies just aren’t enough. Humans were made to eat meat, and especially saturated fat. I recommend watching Dr Ken Berry to learn the proper human diet. I feel sad that there are people out there still believing that fat makes you fat.😢 Fat actually makes you thin. And this doctor is sooooo behind the times and the new science.

Coconut oil is great for any fungal skin infections. My dog gets mites in his ears as well as the occasional patch on his skin that looks like it might be fungal. Hotspots, etc. coconut oil smeared on them completely takes them away. I don’t know on humans, but I would think that any skin condition might react in the same way.

@@ankitgosain7090Similar situation to you. Young otherwise healthy male, couldn’t gain. Plant based diet too calorically dilute. Seed oils are absolute junk. You’re probably already getting a surplus of polyunsaturated fat on a plant based diet. If you aren’t battling any major health issues & don’t have familial hypercholesterolemia etc then look into Cocoa Butter (main fat in chocolate). Amazon has it. It’s a solid fat but it’s probably the safest one. About half of the fatty acid content is saturated stearic acid which has shown in studies to be mostly neutral on cholesterol (possibly the safest long chain saturated fatty acid) and the other half of the fat content is omega -9 monounsaturated fat which is the main fatty acid in olives & olive oil which also has been connected to negligible (and even positive) cholesterol effect. So, in total, while it’s a solid fat it’s probably about only half as saturated as coconut oil. Plus, it has a mild chocolatey taste!

I can guess Dr B's answer after hearing him numerous times. Most likely he would say that there's enough naturally occurring fat in all food so that's not a concern (ie Broccoli has 3-5 percent fat.) However, there are other points of view in the Wfpb community. Dr Fuhrman, for example, strongly recommends consuming at least a half ounce of nuts or seeds at each meal to assure nutrient absorption.

Frying potatoes in olive oil sounds extreme and unusual. Who does that, lol? I use it once a day for stir frying vegetables in skillet with just one measured tablespoon, which is just enough to keep from sticking or burning chopped veggies and if necessary add a little water. I've even tried using water only and it works but have to stir and turn more frequently, and this process is similar to steaming because little squirts of water in pan every few seconds quickly evaporate/steam.

Great interview until Dr. Bernard started talking about pathophysiology of fat and carbohydrates in the diet. The literature is clear it’s the body that prefers carbohydrates as energy so when you eat fat in conjunction with carbohydrates, the fat is immediately stored. You forego the carbohydrates, the body is forced to use fat as energy which explains this phenomenon. However, long-term, high fat diet is extremely unhealthy leading to heart disease, inflammation, and neurodegenerative diseases due to lack of phytonutrients in the diet acting as protective mechanism. So eat your complex carbs, low fat, and plant based protein for longevity and best health outcome 🌱

Same for vegan cheeses, I've never tried them because they're high-calorie and processed, just find something else to eat. Soya products like tofu are delicious. I grill tofu slices in a pan (no oil) to brown it and add a little salt, dried herbs, garlic and onion powder, etc. and eat with a salad and it's so good. Give these a try for a couple of weeks and your taste buds will adapt. You can do it!

So informative, thank you. My personal take-away was the 7-8% calories from fat in daily diet. I recently cut back on my fat intake (to see if I can reduce my a1c) but was worried about going too low. I'm glad to have my worry alleviated. I'm at about 12%, nicely in the range recommended by the Mastering Diabetes guys. (It was Dr. Fuhrman's teachings that had got me worried, he promotes nuts and seeds as part of his G-BOMBS; also I'm not getting in all the nuts and seeds recommended by Dr. Greger in his Daily Dozen). The minor differences in the spectrum of plant-based doc's recommendations leaves me a little confused, but I suspect I'm one of the people that does better on a lower fat diet, given my LDL and a1c are a little high, I'm post-menopausal and my mother had diabetes.

Your explanation of how someone on a keto diet is able to lose weight eating lots of fat is lacking at best. Best part of keto/carnivore is you eat until satiety, there is no need to count anything because your brain will tell you when the body has enough nutrition at that time. So since you harp on so called 9 calories per gram, these people should only be gaining weight. Obviously by the people losing weight, the body is doing something with the fat and protein you are not aware of.

High carb diets like the "mastering diabetes" program don't work for me - I tried it a lot, because I love, love, love this kind of food. In the beginning of the year, I was so desperate, that I started a ketogenic diet. My blood sugar was great for the first time in years. I felt great, I haven't had no cravings for sugar, my sleep was fine etc. But I didn't like the content of diary and meat. Unfortunately, my labs (cholesterol, triglycerides) went up to the roof. So I changed to a vegan keto diet with avocados, seeds, nuts and a little bit of olive and coconut oil. Now everything is fine 😊 Thanks a lot for all your content, I learned a lot from your channel ❤
