Fat Albert is a 2004 American live-action/animated comedy film based on the 1972 Filmation animated television series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids created by Bill Cosby. Kenan Thompson stars as the title character. Fat Albert transforms the cartoon characters into three-dimensional humans, who have to come to grips with the differences that exist between their world and the real world. The film acts as a continuation of the series; Fat Albert and the gang leave their 1972-1975 cartoon world, and enter the 2000s real world to help a teenage girl, Doris Robertson (Kyla Pratt), deal with the challenges of being unpopular.

The animation in this film is pretty good. Part of me wonders if they intended to use this movie to be a pilot film for a modern-day reboot of the cartoon? Also, Bill is portrayed by Keith Robison who also portrayed Joel Rawlings the Green Ranger on Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue.

Kenan Thompson really gave his all during this movie, and did most of Fat Albert's gang. It's just a shame the writing barely gave them anything to work with. Kenan at least kept this from being as bad as it could've been. Also, Doug's right, the Cosby Jokes pretty much right themselves.

It’s a shame that there is an expectation for actors to do amazing regardless of bad directing/writing and such and if they can’t they are bad. Super weird expectation. Cooks/chefs aren’t expected to make great meals without proper prep of good ingredients. Same here cus if actors aren’t given anything good in writing they’re at a deficit already then throw in upper management and their unwillingness to budge and give actors freedom no shit they can’t save a movie with nothing else going on.

Fun Fact: An open casting call was held in both New York and Los Angeles in hopes to cast an unknown kid actor for the role of Fat Albert. After the exhaustive search in both cities proved futile, the producers offered the part to Kenan Thompson.

Another Fun Fact: Bill wears a blue sweatshirt depicting a superhero on it, that superhero is The Brown Hornet. He was a cartoon character Fat Albert and his friends watched from their TV at the Junkyard. Each Brown Hornet segment featured a moral lesson that Fat Albert would use later on in every episode. The Brown Hornet segments were added during Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (1972)'s run from 1979-1984.

According to an article about the making of the animated segments of the film, the characters from the series had to be redesigned for the movie because the original designs were owned by Filmation's then-rights-holder, Hallmark. Said changes are slight, though, with the characters in the movie overall appearing more cartoonish compared to how they appear in the show.

It could be worse. Bill Cosby filmed several fifteen minute segments where he played with a pen and drew things. There's you an obscure deep cut into Cosby lore. They could have tried turning that into a movie. Hell, if his name wasn't mud, they probably would have.

My 2 issue with the movie is they could of used the animation and did a mixture (Roger Rabbit / Cool World / Looney Toons Strike Back) which would fit with the current script and direction and be more memorible. The other one is the "real" world was too forgiving and intentionally scripted feeling and the "Cosby" kids didn't really express their personalities, all the greatness and flaws that made them truly who they are in all the situations to allow the jokes and lessons to flow naturally. Being which with the current script direction really doesn't allow Kenan or the rest to really shine given a concept that yes is goofy, to really have an emotional silly fun journey.

Budget, $45 million. Box office, $48.1 million (US), $48.6 million (worldwide). This Live-Action Adaptation of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids suffered from an Audience-Alienating Premise (Having characters from a down to earth Slice of Life show exit the show, and enter the real world). And it wasn't well received by critics either. This movie proved to be a Creator Killer for its director, Joel Zwick, who has since gone back to the small screen.

I feel this movie would've worked better if it was set in the 1970s when the show was created. That way, It would allow you to capture the essence of the show's color and style in a faithful way instead of the cliche "fictional character lost in our world" trope, (only Rocky & Bullwinkle did that right.) You don't need to be "hip" and modern for the 2000s, and you don't need the boring ass human protagonist overshadowing everyone. I guess it tried to be like Barbie that there's a deep meaning behind the cartoon and the real world, but I don't think kids movies in 2004, nor the studio would be ready for that. Especially if it's a Fat Albert movie.
