    Came across this video because I literally just today dumped Comcast's Gig plan for CenturyLink's fiber internet. The tech told me I'm the first guy in my area to get connected. Glad they're rolling it out around the suburbs of Minneapolis.

    Thanks for the install video! The part where you ran the last speedtest on Xfinity, the upload part is not acruate at all. The finally result is, but when it jumped to over 100mbps up that is not possible currently over DOCSIS 3.1 upstream. I guess its the windows 10 app cause theres no way you can get over a gig on the upload if your only using a gig ethernet adapter, its not techincally possible. But anyway Enjoy the speeds! Thats awesome!

    Had fiber a few years ago and it was great. Then went back to Comcast as they had become the sole provider of my favorite sports team in my area. If you didn't have Comcast you could buy a 40 dollar package with a few select games. Then a few months ago discovered KZread aka Google has a TV service for far less then what Comcast was charging me for both internet and TV. Even with cutting the TV part out of our service still paying about a dollar per MBp/s. Found out Frontier had ran the bulk fiber well before we had moved into this apt complex and we finally switched over. Just about 500 up and down. Now I have to upgrade my router and patch cables to handle the upgraded speeds lol Comcast is just a money grab now.

    I have Century Link fiber at my new build. It worked out nicely having all the conduit ran from DMARC to street locations all new. $65 a month, free install, free modem (ditched and used my Ubiquiti ER4 and removed their router, and not my UDMPRO, just connect to VLAN 201 with PPPoE creds). I love my fiber, it is freaking FAST and very VERY low latency

    Just had my install this week. They installed main hardware in electrical box outside (where my cable came into house) and flat box in livingroom (my choice of location but I think I'd change that now) and they plugged in a 4 unit mesh system that used wi-fi 6 (it might be 6E) and each unit has two Ethernet receptacles on the bottom. They are large enough to require you to use bottom plug on A/C plate or lose one recepticle. Super easy setup using the Q 360 app on iPhone. Bring phone near unit and it sets itself up. The mesh system seems to always be fine tuning itself since speeds have increased a little. Over wi-fi I originally was getting 300-350 mbps on Wed. By Sunday it's now 450 mbps. I don't need my cable modem or wi-fi router so I have more space around my main computer/media server. Very clean setup. I've been experimenting hooking up my HDHomeRun 4K but local ATSC 3.0 channels are flaky at best. Sound on only one network, nothing to do with the wi-fi mesh or fiber. I've moved individual mesh units with no problem and having those two Ethernet sockets are nice. I'm thinking of switching several of my devices like TV, printer etc to connecting through Ethernet to mesh network. Wondering if there is a speed/reliability improvement going that way.

    I've had Fiber internet since 2009 via Verizon and now Frontier FiOS. The best part about it is the reliability! In the 10 years I've had it, the internet has only went down like 3 times from what I can remember. When I had Time Warner Cable before that, internet went down randomly 1-2 times a month for short periods. I had to have my original ONT replaced last year because it started causing TV service issues, not bad considering it was 9 years old. I cut the cord early this year and just stick with Netflix and Prime video now.

    That was not bad for cable at all! Probably about the max upload they could give you considered there are a bunch of TV channels and downstream channels on that cable. I lived in LA for a bit and TW/Spectrum cable was the only provider. It absolutely sucked and was incredibly expensive. ‘Up to’ speeds of 200, but 20-75 was more realistic - and they even offered gigabit! The cable technician told me there are about 1500 people on a node. That’s pretty insane considering I moved to Europe before the pandemic and a cable technician there told me 400 people on one node is the absolute max. I pretty much always got 800-900 Mbps on cable for half of what I paid Spectrum. I can only imagine how congested their network must’ve been when everybody started working from home. Then I switched to DSL because I realized it’s way cheaper and still fast enough for me. I live far away from major cities (no fiber) but still get 100 down and 40 up... on DSL. With 5 to 6 ms ping, better than cable and hasn’t gone down once. AT&T DSL wasn’t even usable for me in the U.S., but it works fine here. I really hope they start rolling out fiber in more places in the US, it’s the best way to improve the internet situation. It’s like rural parts of France or Eastern Europe, where they just skipped upgrading DSL or investing much in cable and went straight to fiber.

    Wow! Awesome video! I'm thinking about switching from 1-GB Xfinity to 1-GB fiber (with Sonic) at their 12-month intro-price of $40 per month ($49.50 with the $9.50 Residential Gateway), then regular price $50 per month ($59.50 with the $9.50 RG), excluding any CA taxes and fees. I'm currently paying Xfinity $132.98 for the 1-GB internet and cable-TV channels (Double Play) for a 12-month intro-plan. But from Jun 2019 to Jan 2020, it was only $127.63. Then went up $5.35 (a $4.00 increase for Broadband TV from $9.50 to $13.50 plus taxes). Also, in Jun 2020 my intro discounts stop. So the same service will go up $65.00 plus taxes (totaling over $200.00 -- Yikes!). Comcast raises their prices every year, their base price and added on fees, sometimes twice a year. It's an annoying annual price hike for the same service even if one can afford it! So I'm thinking about ditching Comcast, just getting the 1-GB fiber internet as I 99% watch my $12.99 per month Netflix, rarely my Comcast TV channels. My only concern is whether Sonic (the new competition) will jack-up their base price and fees and taxes just for 1-GB Internet after 1-year to near Comcast prices for 1-GB plus TV -- forcing me to go back to Comcast for a better deal at a lower cost ... especially as Comcast has a near-monopoly in Northern CA. I guess free-market competition is a myth when you become a mega-ISP-corporation as evidence by most high-end modems and routers all marketing themselves as Xfinity etc certified. Yikes! And to think I just bought a high-end Netgear CM1000 modem and ASUS RT-AC88U router to handle my 1-GB internet. I guess I'll donate them to a local church since they don't handle fiber optics service and Sonic requires one use their RG.

    I have Google Fiber. Pay $70 a month. Just got the 1 gig as I dont need anymore than that. So, when I built my PC I saved a little money on the mobo by not getting a wifi one since I wanted to use LAN anyway to get full speed (sucks that it also means no bluetooth, but its not that big a deal to me). But, yea, its great. It usually is around 900-950 mb up/down with only 1ms ping/jitter (sometimes tests read 0ms ping but I am not sure that is possible theoretically, so I assume it really means some decimal ping under 1 ms). I also have a regular Comcast cable 50mb down/10 mb up just for my work computer. Only pay $9.95/month (because I get the ACP discount). So, yea, I have two ISPs for under $100 a month. I live in Nashville, TN. Nice setup man.

    Speedtest is notoriously volatile in measuring Internet speeds. Depending on what server you select, time of day, connection type and what else my computer is running I can get vastly different speeds. The server Speedtest selects is never the fastest but the app can give you an idea of what your speeds actually are.

    I can usually get close to a full Gbps upload from CenturyLink. Their download seems packet shaped to death, though. I do give them credit for my install. We didn't have fiber to our box. Good on you for getting it done. Even if I were to only get 300Mbps down, that would still be 3x faster than what I had for less money, and with sub-10ms pings to much of the country.

    Just to be clear after watching your video. They did not "trench' your cable along the street they 'bored' a tunnel using a Witchditch device and ran the cable through. Trenching involves surface digging and make more of a mess. Unless you were having Cable reliability issues it looks like you basically traded Cable for Fiber and got: 1) Slightly lower Ping times (3ms) from an already (10ms) low Ping to begin with (which would not be noticeable) 2) Same Download speeds (940Mb) 3) Vastly higher Upload speeds (50Mb to 1Gb) which would not be noticeable for most people. Now this higher upload speed would be noticeable for content creators who upload large file like KZread videos. 4) Unknown long term reliability (I realize some people have more outages than others but in 25 years of Comcast cable internet service I hardly ever have issues). 5) Lower monthly price (read the fine pint and you see that Centurylink can change your lifetime price or any running promotions at any time in the future at their discretion). If for some reason their prices go up yours will too (Starlink just raised their prices as well) 6) You must take paperless billing and prepay to get the lowest price (not unusual) Not saying it is a bad product or a bad price but it seems like you really only got a much faster upload (which may be very important) for a slightly lower price (I pay $20 more for 1Gb Cable, was able to negotiate a lower Cable price and you lose some fees when you drop Cable TV). I do not have any Fiber providers covering my area (Minneapolis suburb) so Cable is the best I can do. If Fiber becomes available here then I would probably switch but might run both for awhile until I was sure I liked it.

    For the super nerds in here that know what they are doing. Always check with your ISP about the kind of handoff you want. In my case, I wanted to use SC > LC OS2 Armored Fiber > SFP+ Module > connected directly to my router. This removes the need for the ONT device and the need to convert the signal into a copper signal for termination on your router.

  • @tears2040

    @tears2040

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thats incorrect, the module is exactly what makes the fiber transition to copper (if not you wouldn't need a module and would plug the fiber directly in with none), also the ONT is inside of the modem. Regardless there is no difference in speed, 1 Gb is 1Gb, in theory its supposed to be better but no real proof currently.

  • @ryanhyde7437

    @ryanhyde7437

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@tears2040 That maybe the case with an ISP provided modem/router however as a consumer you are not locked into using ISP equipment. It is usually completely optional. Your Fiber provider can terminate the fiber cable to the panel on the side of your house using SC or LC connectors. From there you can purchase an SC > LC fiber cable that plugs directly into an Fiber SFP/+ module on your own router WAN SFP/+ port. From there everything downstream (LAN) can be copper. Also please spend some more time reading about SFP modules there are both Fiber and Copper modules. Maybe not a lot of difference in perceived speed but latency for copper is going to be higher the longer the distance to your ISPs nodes. With copper you have to amplify the signal every x amount of feet. With Fiber it is amplified every x amount of lets say yards or even miles which reduces the amount of processing time resulting in lower latency.

For example, one of our main hubs with hundreds of fiber customers barely peaks around 1.5 Gbps. 1 Gbps is a sales/marketing scheme. It is cool to know that speed is an option. You can get 10 Gbps with us but it will cost you big money. Most PCs' NIC can barely process 1 Gbps.

    After seeing them bringing the directional drilling machine go under the driveways. I can see why they wanted to charge 700 bucks. It's not cheap to run them lol.

    It doesn’t matter anyway about your internet. It all depends on where you live and the location of the server

    We have the ability to get Centurylink DSL which you get 10 mbps upload and 1 mbps download. They won’t run fiber for me. We have the some Xfinity plan that you have.
