Could you please explain or point me to the right place to learn about chunk size versus performance? I understand the largest chunk size is to effectively move large files, but I noticed during my recent network transfer of thousands of tiny files that it took hours! Is there a 'rule of thumb' for chunk size to the size of files to be moved? I'm planning on using a m2 mac mini as a RAID/NAS together with an OWC nvme 4 slot enclosure.

@Fyr042
Жыл бұрын
Without parity like in RAID0 if your data/file to write is smaller than the chuck size only a part of the chunk is used. The rest is left unallocated and usable for other files. If data is bigger it's will be split in chunk sized parts and use as many as needed. The last partial chuck is not usable for other files. In raid0 the first chunk is on disk1, the second on disk2... this why chunks not filled are not usable for other files. On array with parity (= security, you all know that raid0 is unsecure ...) like in raid5 , if file is smaller than a chuck this data is written on one disk, and parity takes a partial chuck on an other disk. For data bigger than a chuck it's the same as raid0, with your file on multiple disks, except that for all chuck you have a parity block on an other disk. In raid0 you don't loose space (only your data in case of catastrophic events) in raid5 with 4 disks like in the video you loose 20% of space with 256K and up to 33% with 128K chunk (twice the number of chunk versus 256K so twice more parity block) In raid0 you dont care about the chuck ONLY to match "electronic and buffer" capacity transfer.
You have done again, Theresa!

This is a very informative video. I'm curious if you've had a chance, yet, to try out the new Sonnet 8x4 NVMe card. I recently got one, along with a new 2023 Mac Pro, and tried to get it working with 8 Crucial P3+ 4Tb NVMe cards (which are on the approved list). No dice. The computer doesn't indicate that the card is there. So far, Sonnet tech support has not come up with an answer for me, so I'm afraid I'll just be sending it back for a refund. My question, though, is what to replace it with. The MP 2023 has Gen 4 PCIe slots. I'd like to get a Gen 4 NVMe card, to take full advantage of my Gen 4 NVMe cards, and Gen 4 PCIe computer. The only other option I can see is the OWC 8M2 (which unfortunately has a fan, and I don't need the extra noise in my recording studio). If the Sonnet 8x4 card I have is just defective, I'm still a little worried about getting a replacement, because Sonnet says the card is not compatible with the initial release of Sonoma. I need this computer to just work and not have problems with operating systems. So, what would you do? Get two Sonnet 4x4 cards, or maybe two OWC 4M2 cards and take the performance hit of the Gen 3 limit, or go with the OWC 8M2, and hope the fan isn't too noisy? I'd love to see you do a review of the new Sonnet 8x4 card. Maybe you could get it working.
