Fastest Harleys on The Tail Of The Dragon? Part 2 (Raw)

Still dragging peg even with those 13.5" Fox Shocks but now I'm running out of tire. Zero chicken strip on this '96 ~Biff
About to wear a whole through my thunderheader, next purchase will definitely be some taller shocks. ~Hogboy

I hope you are still alive ! Do not cut the corner short by going inside too early, it will only make the radius tighter (causing peg drag ) ! If you can't make it the long way around, you certainly aren't going to survive a short cut !!! Crossing the center line is a sure sign of being out of control.

Ok ! That is much better than the first one . I live on a country-road like this , many corners are tighter (35k-signed) and the road isn't as flash or wide as yours . It takes about 35mins hard-out, each way (faster on the uphill than coming back down )My 81 TR1 (chain-drive xv981cc,a bit like the xv920rh you guys got ) is putting-out a tad over 70hp , open-pipes, 40mm-flatslides and runs stock mono-shock-rear with upgraded front-fork-internals, factory twin-disc .I hit around 140k on the two straight-sections, sport-bikes pass me like I'm standing-still . FWIW most of NZ's roads are like your tail of the Dragon (but not as wide) while our 'Main-roads' are about the same-width as your 'Tail' , turning-into double-lane 'motorways' near Cities, which we have f-all of . Our roads were rated 2nd=best to Afghanistan (before the invasion) for motorcycling roads in the World , so we are lucky in that-respect . Dave NZ

That does sound similar to the dragon, most corners are marked 20mph, though there are some 10mph hairpins. I too max out on the dragon at 90mph and the sport bikes walk right away from us but I'm hoping the new suspension will help close the gap a bit. Be at Jennings GP in a couple weeks, upgrading and testing all winter in preparation for BRL (bagger race league) big twin class 2023. I'll try to film and post more. ~Hogboy

I was out riding my 97 1100 Virago, modified with much stronger and sensitive brakes and stiffer progressive springs in the forks and 15 WT fork oil. Handles pretty good, although at 75, I don't push it too hard. There is a section of fun road that runs over Tiger Mountain. These two young fellows passed me and I thought I would follow them to see how they rode. Both guys were faster than me, but I was able to keep them in sight. I could see that they were doing the same as these Harleys, cutting into the apex way too soon and slowing them down. i knew the road better than these guys did and I was afraid the rear bike was going to low-side because he kept stabbing the brakes in the corner. Sure enough, at a 10 MPH, off camber, decreasing radius corner, he apex-ed way too early and could not slow enough and ended in the middle of the oncoming lane. After that, I fell back. Thank goodness he did not meet an oncoming car. If he had met the Corvette a couple of minutes later that was out of control in that corned he would be hurt very bad. That Corvette was half in my lane when I was trail braking into a the same corner. I just kept braking and swerved to the inside most lane edge. Remember R= MPH. I learned that well about 45 years ago and practiced trail braking and changing my line tighter. Has saved me more times than I remember.

Impressive... Running that slowly and still unable to stay in your lane. It's not a racetrack so please don't treat it like one if you don't have the skill for it. Genuinely though, I do like to see riders of all bike types taking steps to get more skills. I encourage you to get some better tires and then find an advanced riding school to learn more about cornering. It's a great way to add more enjoyment to your riding. Bike sounds good!

"late apex! as late as you can turn in at the last second, brake straight , neutral throttle, turn in roll pass apex, wfo. repeat. from the mouth of the Great Freddie Spencer while on the back of his VFR 800 dragging his knee on the ground spewing "cornering 101" through his famous helmet . Do that for what you believe to be 2 quick laps, until lap three starts this is the quick lap! a whole different zipcode quicker.. the most practical how to go really really fast education i can imagine

Perfect timing for road crack damage too pitch bike right into aggressive white car, oh baby! it's those unseen road conditions an timing of other vehicle that's the danger rush! Don't let the front rider, make you over-ride past your riding skill limits! It's like one of my friends just rides for speed. But I don't ride for speed. I ride for enjoyment an more safety in mind, over speed. So I know it's foolish for me too think I can out power my friend with speed, with a different riding style an goals! The other major reason for speed sanity around my local area is cops. Example: I'm riding old Clackamas River road, doing 4 miles over because I know cops love boat ramp parking for naps! An biker on one rear wheel goes by me at twice speed limit. He's being chased by lighted cops car at next corner. An pulled over. I go by cops writing biker ticket. But soon after, this biker just flies by me again on one rear wheel, an here is cop car behind me, wanting by, to give motorcycle a second ticket. So I go by cops giving guy second ticket. But here is life's lesson: the bikers goes by me a third time, doing twice speed limit, on one rear wheel! An now expecting cops wanting too pass I just move bike over an let them pass, a Third time! This time I pull over a ask as cops are leaving, why man, you just got 3 tickets? It's my riding style, an I expect tickets every time I ride. He takes off again on one rear wheel twice the speed limit. Now cops are ahead of him. I wondered if they waited an popped him a 4th time on beautiful river drive? Some rider just need close courses too ride. Wonder what a days ride worth of tickets an court dates cost him? I wonder what his record is like?
