FASTER!! EASIER!! BETTER!! HWH Slideout Room Chain Replacement: X-Arm

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we are back at the shop and back working on a HWH slide out room. I was contacted by a viewer that their HWH slide out room is binding on their 2006 Country Coach Affinity. They had already troubleshot it to find that a chain roller is broken and ordered the replacement part already. Now I have done this repair enough times to know not to want to do it, but they assured me that it was the chain at the front of the slide behind the passenger seat with very easy access. With that information, I did agree to do the repair. I have previously made a video about the chain replacement and have since aquired a broken hydraulic pump and developed a easier method, so join me as we replace the HWH X-Arm RV slide out "push/pull" chain yet again.
Thanks for watching!!

Excellent presentation. Thank you. Just a friendly reminder that a "no slide" coach is the best coach of all.

Now we see why these jobs can be expensive, you need this type of expertise to have it done correctly. And yes James this wasn’t his first rodeo. 😊😊👍

The original rollers were molded and had a thin wall right where the roller contacts the guide and failed all to often. HWH used to sell rollers and pins for repair but they stopped doing that several years ago. I was faced with an emergency repair and bought a nylon rod and pins from McMaster-Carr. I was lucky to gain access to a small lathe and made a sack full of rollers. Its been more than a few years and my replacement rollers are holding up fine. To replace a defective roller I just nick off the swaged end of the roller pin and install the new roller, pin and clip. Easy peasy - when you can get to the chain that is. James, your video and approach will help many folks, and maybe me someday, that are stuck with a faulty slideout mechanism - Thank You!!

Looking at your "spare defective" hydraulic pump - that is exactly what I have on my 2005 Cedar Creek 5th wheel - terrible design of that plastic reservoir. I tried replacing o-rings, and other ideas - still leaked. Finally found a metal reservoir that was the same size. Very snug fit, and no leaks to this day.

Since I couldn't get on your schedule to do the chains on my Vectra, I had a local shop do both of them for me. In the process of bleeding the system the front cylinder left the chat and it looked like a murder scene with red hydraulic fluid pouring out the front wheel well. Also had the hoses from the rear cylinder to the equalizing cylinder replaced.

Many thanks for posting this great video. I have an '05 Monaco Exec that I know has a broken roller in that very same chain behind the passenger seat. I found pieces of it on the floor maybe 3 years ago but had heard it was quite a job to replace. Now I can see why it is. So far everything is still functioning OK but I know it's only a matter of time. I thought you could replace just the broken roller and didn't know you had to replace the entire chair. Didn't HWH used to offer repair kits for those chains?

James, have you ever replaced a Solenoid on a HWH system? I have one that is allowing my slide to drift out and I can only find the solenoid from HWH at $250 per. Any idea where else to find them?

Great video. Why not use Stainless Steel wheels.

  • @shrconstruction

Because stainless steel would gall and bind up. They are using nylon most likely because of its self lubricating properties. They should be using hardened steel with bearings but that would eliminate selling repair parts which would go against the profit programs of rv manufactures.
