I listened to Tracy Chapman a lot as a kid. Mainly because my parents would play it from the car stereo on road trips and the like. I loved the sound of the vocals and backing acoustic guitar. I understood this song to mean that she ran away somewhere. What from and where to, I didn't know. I mainly took it to mean that she was gaining independence, as all young people do. That seemed natural enough to me at the time. Now, listening again years later, I begin to understand the full meaning of this song. When I was young, I didn't realise that her father was an abusive drunk. I didn't realise that she ended up running, but finding herself back in the same situation anyway - this time with the roles redefined. I didn't realise that the man she ran with, ended up being a drunk to her children in turn. I am heartbroken and transfixed listening to this: transfixed, because of your ability to convey the meaning of this song with such tenderness and care, but heartbroken because of the meaning it implies. Thanks Jaz for opening my eyes. :)

The original song of this was my little brothers song to help him fall asleep when he was a baby. When I heard this song it hit me hard, even now i cry listening to it ( Happy tears though :) ) As well you made a song called willow, which is the name of one of my other little sisters.
