Well deserved break and glad your back. I knew we had a lot in common when it came to sailing but it looks like we also share a common link in IT. You did a great job explaining the different Ethernet standards and how POE works, I like the idea of remotely checking in on your boat😀. …….My update ….while you have been away I have taken my mast off the boat for re painting and new standing and running rigging. Hope to have the re paint done over the next couple of weeks, weather permitting. All the best to you both.

Great to find another PKI/IT guy knowing what he is doing to get good and secure access to the boat! As for the outcome of what you call your ‘experiment’: I can tell you it will work like a charm - I built a very similar system (teltonika, Venus GX, WiFi Booster, low power Linux computer) last year (albeit with two LTE antennas on the arch - with appropriate coax cables). I have a nice screenshot of the signal strength at 25nm off the northern French coast and I kept the system running all through the winter to check batteries, solar, temperatures, humidity …. DDNS was my first approach, too, but unfortunately the mobile providers I came across did not allow any incoming packets so I set up the router to establish an outgoing VPN. Absolutely love the way you are explaining what you did!

Yup PKI is what I do, it's a fun technology. Cool that you have set the same system up. At least I know I am on the right lines :) happy days. The system has been up and running for a couple of weekends now and it has worked really well. I haven't got to a place with low cell phone signal yet though, that will be the ultimate test. Interesting about the DDNS, so far I haven't found any problems, I need to configure a route from the VPN lan across to the lan and do it very carefully so I don't have to climb the mast to reset and reconfigure the router. That would be a pain indeed, that's the only risk, that and changing the SIM card. Thanks for the comment.

Yes, as everyone else says...welcome back. I really enjoy the details that you bring to the video - it's your "niche" that sets you aside from other diy sailing channels. I know that not everyone would like that emphasis, but for those of us that enjoy a little more than music and scenery, it really sets you apart. I noticed that you didn't separate the stainless mount from the aluminium mast with some sort of paste (duralac would have worked) or a gasket. Are you not worried about bimetallic reaction? Or did I miss something?

I have completely forgot to put any isolation up there in between the stainless and aluminium, you are absolutely right. Looks like I am going up the mast with a drill soon. I knew something was in the back of my mind... now I will pay for it.

Thanks very much. Just doing the final touches to it now. There is a networking configuration that I am a little afraid to change with the router at the top of the mast for my VPN routing but it's something I will just have to do at some point and hope for the best. I will post another video at some point with the full setup

Good to see an update from you. Looks like a great technical solution and well executed. Have you given any thought on how you can carry out a functional test, before they step the mast, could save a wee bit of grief? I suppose it all depends on how close they can get the mast to the boat while it is on stands - to enable connecting with temporary leads.

Hi Norman, I basically had to connect and configure everything before I mounted everything. I was pretty sure it was going to work, the only thing I was a little concerned about was the mast itself blocking the signal if the phone mast is behind the boat. This hasn't been a problem though :) Thanks for the comment

Great video as usual. I would certainly be interested in the vpn set up on this, I have been using the Geosafe tracker for some years and it may have given up the ghost this year (I’ll be looking at that this weekend). And the additional benefits in the 4G could be good although in Norwegian coastal waters there isn’t a lot of need as we seem to have coverage everywhere. Agree at skipping the 5G - as I understand it there is no distance at all. In fact I suppose it will be for city dwellers mostly. Besides 4G is great for Netflix. Look forward to your next video 👍

Great job, One issue I do see however is the POE/LAN cable you have run up the mast looks like a standard blue sheath Cat 5/6 cable. This can have problems with water ingress thru the outer sheath in certain climates, You can get a Gel filled cable, that alleviates this, by filling the air space within the cable with a water dispersing Jelly, No air space means no water can be sucked in thru heating/ cooling of the cable. Maybe something for the future to be aware of. (Radio and Data comms technician here with decades of experience of out door and underground cabling). Safe and happy travels.

Yup your absolutely right, I should have put some more outdoor heavy duty cable up there to be honest, but then it would have taken a lot of space in the through deck fitting which may have stopped the run altogether. My plan is to replace this and put a better one there and if the cable fails, this will be on the todo list also. It's not too hard to run a new one at least through the mast, thanks for the advice though. Much appreciated

Thank you for an informative video. I would suggest to use a little 12v switch with Poe+ to feed the router with power. That little switch can than feed other devices as well, video camera and other stuff, plus you get Ethernet connection to your tv.. I’m also curious about your antenna, it’s a good idea to place it as high as possible but if it is Omni directional it’s not optimal to have it close the mast, on top would be best in that case. And regarding weight that high up you would want to hoist it only when needed :)

Hi there, I went through all of the options with the POE, and figured the best would just be to keep it simple this time, I might improve it in the future. With the TV I could ethernet it anyways to the Teltonika router but WiFi is more than good enough for this, I haven't had any problems there although maybe ethernet could rreduce a little power consumption but not much. The antenna is omni directional and I had long thoughts about this placing it right next to the mast but I have had absolutely no problems with this setup. We could get internet 20 miles offshore with the antennas behind us, so I don't think it affected it in any way :) The weight of the device is less then 3 kilos, I would like it to be lighter but didn't really have an option. With the boat at 90 degrees on it's side it would pull 30kg on the shrouds, it's not too much for a +10 tonne boat, we haven't had any issues so far and the boat feels stable. I hope this helps :)

@@SailingAurora thank you for getting back :) regarding the antenna working well anyway is good, but I’m pretty sure the reflecting signals that bounce back from the mast to the antenna is affected the performance in some way. But it’s hard to know how bad, if the end users experience is good than it’s good :) As a rule we newer place omniantenna close to metal, at least 50cm of.

Have you thought about how hard swapping SIM cards might be at the top of your mast? I have the Teltonika RUTX11 on board. Great router. You mentioned a signal booster, they are quite different to a router and generally not licensed for use in European networks. A US cell booster literally receives a week signal and re-broadcasts it. Which POE injector are you using ? All the POE systems I have found operate at much higher than 12v so I’d need a buck boost voltage converter to power the POE injector.

Hi Martin, yes, changing the sim is a big downfall here. It's going to be tricky. In Sweden I can use the same sim if I want to change operator so that's good at least. It's pretty simple and good because it still support 1GB p/s on the wire :) Just plug 12v into it and your good to go

Yay! I'm looking at improving our onboard networking on our Dutch kotter. Currently using a simple small access point. We want more reliable connections for remote locations (a river cruiser's definition of remote), since we are working from boat. I have set up a network with Ubiquiti devices as a favor to our old marina, but I don't have experience with onboard solutions. Please post some updates to let us know how the connectivity is. Good video! I actually do have the Digital Yacht installation, and here's a fun fact: inside the Digital Yacht box, a Teltonika RUT240 is hiding. I'm actually in the process of swapping it out for a RUT360 or the RUTX09 and keeping the antenna's.

@@SailingAurora sort-of kind-of simplifies it, they offer support, though. The UI is still the same with some Digital Yacht branding added. But, the Pro version does come with the antenna's and wiring for those, so in the end it may be a little overpriced, it does get you a complete ready-to-go system that works out of the box (okay, you have to put a sim card in but ok :P).

@@nickell84 I have no idea to be honest, I got mine with the Digital Yacht package, and they're currently on my back arch so hard to find the manufacturer/model - I can look tomorrow, though if I remember to come back here :D The problem is you can't be higher than 7 meters with them or you're looking at the thicker antenna wiring through your mast which may be an issue. Personally I have good signal with them being on the aft solar panel arch, so keep that in mind as an option, maybe :)

Thanks for the tips. Even though I think that’s way too big box to put in the top of a mast. I would prefer something smaller... Also the router is not very accessable in case of problems. So, I’m definitely still looking for some another kind of solution. In a meantime we try to hang in there with our mobile phone network... 😆

After installing it the same way (just with a Teltonika RUTX11) I cannot recommend this setup at sail boats after 5 months of usage: I installed the antenna+router at my main mast around 20m above the water line. The result is that the Wifi signal is very very poor as this antenne does not provide sufficient Wifi signal in this direction! At my boat nearly all IoT sensors and relays did run out of connection. So i needed to install a second rounter in the boat with the result of double permanent energy consumption. Havin my router running 24/7 the double power consumption is significant. Why the creator of this video did not mention this is a mystery for me. But only speaking about the range extension of the LTE signal it is working fine and the difference is significant.

Sorry to see you are dissapointed with the instalation, many others have been very satisfied. I did look at just putting at RUTX11 at the top but I was aware of WIFI only really likes to go 90 degrees or so to the antenna so I went with the 9 and 10 with one in the boat just for WIFI, this probably uses a little less power than the 11 and something else. My system uses a constant 20w or so, which is close to 2 amps. I wasn't too concerned about this as I have a fair bit of Lithium onboard and I wanted more performance that the DIgital Yacht setup. The Teltonika is a Cat6 router with a good processor behind it. When the boat is in the marina, I have constant shore power so isn't really an issue and if we are out, in the worst case I switch it off if we get low on power. I hope you find a solution.

I'm using teltonika products for a rov application.It's very good and like you said professionnal.The only problem here is if you want to change the sim card, going on top of the mast and changing this small piece without loosing it You shoud secure SMA connectors with hotglue,thread lock or something similar. Due to vibrations,I had issue with these connectors (without external antenna this routeur is useless)

Hi there, yup the solution has been working great and yes it's gonna be a pain in the backside when I have to replace the SIM. Also a reset button would be good at the bottom of the mast also, with those two additions it was be so awesome. Hot glue, that would have been good, there is probably alot of vibration while sailing up there.

Looking forward to an update with experiences on how the setup there has worked for you. No need to climb the mast for a hard reset to get back the factory settings? :)

It would be nice to have those down below. That is why when I change any router settings, I am ultra careful and it's well tested before going up the mast. Cheers

Hi, thanks for a great video. I am planning to do the exact same installation on my boat. Now that you have used yours for some time, are you still happy with the results? Anything you would do differently if you were to do it again? My only concern is the water-tightness of the Quspot but perhaps that’s not a problem? Im on the Swedish west coast and I keep my boat in all year and will not be removing the quspot over winter but maybe thats no problem at all. Best regards

Hi there, yes, still very happy with the installation to be honest. It just works all of the time, no issues at all and you kind of take it for granted after a while.... because we always have internet, we kind of forget about it. The Quspot is very water tight, no problems there. I would bet on that it would be fine. The only thing I wish would be easier is the SIM card change and possibility to reset the router if something happens (you can get around this with SMS I believe) Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris! I am on the way to "copy" your concept using my RUTX11. You are speaking about "termination" of the Cat7 LAN cable. I think you mean just to crimp an end of the cable which you cut before to put it into the Ethernet-connector right? Because to put a terminator at theend of a network cable might mean something different. May I ask you which switch you are using within your boat to connect with your POE injector and then to your Teltonika? The last comment was 2 years ago: Are you still fine with your concept or did you modify soemthing in between? Anyway great job Chris!

Hey there, yes still very happy with the setup, it's running great. Indeed, I meant put a connector on the end to go into a RJ45 plug. if I understood your question correctly, the POE injector is just a cheap one from Amazon, it injects a dumb 12v signal on 4 of the pins, if I remember correctly, these are 4+5 and 7+8 and the POE connector can still do a 1GB connection. Hello! I'm currently implementing this solution on my boat myself. I'm just wondering about one thing: how has the antenna mount held up? I imagine there will be quite a bit of force up there, and I'm a bit concerned that it might not be strong enough. Since you've been sailing with it for a few years now, has it held up well?

Great Video. I am thinking about a setup that has Irdium Go, 4G and a wireless extender. I have been searching for a device that would prioritise cheapest connection i.e. Free Wifi, then 4g then Iridium (for wether files and voice calling only of course). Does such a device exisit?

Another thing to check 😀 Regarding your VPN plan. My telco uses CGNAT, basically a double NAT system that totally blocks your device ports from the outside internet. I have started playing with a double VPN set up that connects to an intermediary server in the cloud to work around this. Not got it working yet....

Hi, did you thought actually about the weight you add to the top of the mast? Like I know you need to get a new certification if you put such a huge amount of 2 kg on top of the mast. Special if you have a production boat. Just learned it at school. ;-)

Hi Thomas, I have actually calculated it, at 90 degrees heel, it will pull up on the shroud at 30kg. At 45 degrees only 15kg, so I am really not that worried with this size of boat. As for the certification, it's my boat so if it works, I am happy. So far it's been doing great

Hi there. Is there a reason why you do not install the Teltonika device down below in the boat and just get a cable for an external antenna to the top of the mast? By doing so, you would reduce the size and weight at the masttop significantly. Best regards, Silvano

"Too cold to liveaboard in Sweden?" If you get a decent boat, insulates it properly, get a good heating system (wood, diesel and/or electric when shored), build a sturdy tent w/even more insulating matts, and find a suitable marina? From the YT world, Mads did it for 6 yrs (OK it was Denmark, but still), Ran II survived well w a baby this winter, and Uma and Alluring Arctic did the same in Norway (all the kudos to tropical born Kika). From the off-tube world I know of numerous ppl from all over Scandinavia living on the water yr around, eg my cousin thrived well on her 59 foot yacht for yrs in Mid-Norway. I guess you have to have the right attitude ... like Kazza on Delos who def didn't fancy the semi-tropical US E-coast. But I can also understand the convenience if you can afford or are in the position to keep a designated winter apt ... maybe you airbnb yours during summer? Cool channel though.

Of course, I follow those channels too and totally agree with you. Maybe we will get a boat to do this one day, but Aurora ain't the boat to spend the winter on up here. It would be expensive to heat and get too damp inside without the insulation. You could put insulation on top, Eve's adventures did it for one season but its not ideal. I think if we were full time cruising we might get away with it but right now we are still working so better to rent over the winter.

Will you do a long time revievw on your wifi/4G solution? Pros, cons and maybee any new ideas? /Robert

It is going to be interesting if you go cruising worldwide every time you need to change your Sim you are up the mast. Though obviously this is not in your current plans therefore is not an issue.

Hello, what about a Raspberry pi4 VPN, what do you think?, could be good a VPN configuration technical video. Thanks, you have a new subscriber. Ps. Paint the end of the stainless steel screews you cut in the 4G base, it loose properties when heated at cutting with grinder. Sorry for my english.

Hi Marcelo, no worries with the English, I think I understand. I chose to put the VPN on the router so I don't have to have the Pi powered on. Good advice for a video on it though, I will see what the future brings. Good advice with the rivets aswell with paint. I should have just put some insulation in between or something. Cheers

What did you do to prevent galvanic corrosion between the mast and your new router fitting and rivets

Hi Bruce, nothing.. and I'm kicking myself for it right now as it's something I completely forgot. Looks like I will be up the mast soon with a drill, insulation and a rivet gun... Dam!

Hi Bruce, I spoke to the rigger and he said that with my mast the aluminium has a coating on it, so I shouldn't have a problem. The only corrosion he has seen on Selden mast's is sometimes with the rivets themselves, but this can take a long time to manifest. I will do some more research

@@SailingAurora that is really good news. Saw an article where a radar had been fitted to a spreader and there was considerable corrosion but it was caused by the rivets....

Hi when you put out this video you said you might put together a video on how to add a VPN to your router. Hi Martin, I will try my best to get something together for that one. To give you a head start you will need to look into DDNS and get yourself a Dynamic IP address, this is so you can find your router on the internet. Then you will need someway of securing the VPN connection. I did this with 2 certificates, one client cert and one server cert. You can then put these certs on the device and your laptop, install a vpn software and begin building the connection from there. BR Chris

Hello Olivier.... when I read this, I really had a bugger moment.... dam! now I'm gonna have to climb the mast, drill the rivets and get some insulation up there. It's something that I completely forgot in all the chaos of getting the boat ready. At one point it was i the back of my mind, just didn't think about it. @@SailingAurora if you use Monel or aluminium rivets into aluminium then you should not have electrolysis bit as the bracket is stainless that needs some isolation from the mast. Duralac paste is a good solution to insulate different metals.

Very happy with it to be honest, works really well. Only downer is the factory reset and the sim card is up the mast. I probably would not do this on a smaller boat sure to the 3kg weight at the top. Pretty glad I went with this solution though

Nearly 3 kg aloft + windage at mast top... Ouch !!! Not a thing I be glad to fit

Can't say I blame you in a way, but compared to the mast profile, the windage really isn't that much and the mast probably weighs at least a couple of hundred kilos, so this doesn't make that much difference at all, even if at the top. We sailed with it on the weekend, didn't notice anything.

Absolutely, I have been thinking about this and I have been really really careful in changing any configuration on the router to avoid locking myself out. That is the downside for sure.

You can live without internet for oooh....minutes at a time!

That’s a lot of weight to add to the top of the mast, this will a have quite an effect on the yachts angle of heel. Also it will reduce the yachts angle of vanishing stability, have you calculated what effect this is going to have? A sailor view point!

Good thoughts, I have actually calculated it, at 90 degrees heel, it will pull up on the shroud at 30kg at 45 degrees only 15kg, so I am really not that worried with this size of boat
