    Great video, awesome content! Personally, when going wider than 35 I prefer slr over rf. I feel that the wider you get, the easier it is to mess up the composition, the more advantageous it is to have a ttl preview. Of course that means more weight and bulk. Anyway, my fav wide for slr is the zeiss distagon 2/28 zf2.

    Hi Matt! This is your best post so far IMHO. You went beyond the technical differences and demonstrated what these lenses can do: superb pictures! Do you find the innate depth of field of these lenses a hinderence even when shooting wide open? I was glad to be sitting down when the subject of price came up. While I did indulge myself once with a first generation 35mm Summicron for my beloved M3, my 28mm is a $60 FD for my Canon AE 1. It does the trick, but it is obviously not in the same league as your finery. There again, as an accomplished wedding photographer you can justify such purchases.

    Hi Jeremy, thank you! Very kind I find the shallow depth using for female portraits. I posted an image tonight on Flickr and Facebook and you can see the shallow DOF even on the crop sensor CL. Yes the price shocked me too ha. When I was doing a lot of weddings I invested all the money straight back into the best glass. I just tried to give the client the best image quality possible. I'm not saying i'm anything special :)

    Interesting as always. I have the 28mm Ultron and f2.8 M-Rokkor despite rarely shooting at 28mm. A downside of the M-Rokkor is that it brings up 35/135 framelines, which the CLE doesn't have, to avoid activating the 90mm frameline that is normally paired with the 28mm. When I make myself use it I rather like the results the Ultron gives me... I'm looking forward to your review!

    Another great and informative review Matt...many thanks. I have the Summicron 28mm f2 because I never use flash. It works really well in low light. As does the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 III I bought following another one of your reviews. I traded in my M240 for a CL, just before the CL2 is launched if the rumours are to be believed, because the combination is so much lighter than the M240 and I don't see much difference in the results.

    I fell in love with 28mm on a canon 5D-something with a Zeiss 28mm F2. Then also 25mm. I have the Summicron you reviewed (v1) in my hand, usually with the big plastic hood attached because I (as a street photographer) banging into things. I had the 25mm distagon-M you use, and I really didn’t like it. I traded for an Elmarit v4, then up’d bodies from m246 to m10m and thought I needed ASPH. Now I want the v2 Summicron. But isn’t .4m focusing (?) in the v2023 so welcome?!

    I would like to add a 28mm to my kit and prefer native lenses. Having settled on the Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit, the 70's era pre ASPH is 60% less in cost. Is it worth going for the ASPH or are the earlier versions of the Elmarit acceptable?

  • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

    @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

    Hi, it’s all personal taste I think. The same as Summilux Pre vs ASPH. I wanted the 28 ASPH for the size and modern high performance. I’ve not used the older 28 but I’d expect it to have more character and be less perfect. Older lenses tend to have less contrast and more prone to flare too but I can’t say for sure for the 28.

    I've used both. They're pretty close. I find the ZM Biogon 28mm to be superior to the non-ASPH Leica offerings, and on a par if not slightly better than the 28 Elmarit ASPH. In fact the Biogon is my favorite lens in my favorite focal length! It's absolutely phenomenal. There are a few annoyances (for me) with the ZM: - The ZM is physically slightly bigger, so you have a bit more of view finder blockage; - The aperture ring has 1/3 indents as opposed to Leica which has 1/2, so if you have a mixed set it takes some getting used to. - I prefer the focus tab on the Leica, although you do get used to the ZM pretty quickly and in real use I don't find one quicker than the other. In terms of build quality and QC, the ZM is on a par with Leica. I've had QC issues with some new Leicas (sticky aperture ring, wobbly focus ring, weak plastic on lens hoods). Others have had QC issues with ZM lenses. I haven't. I wish Zeiss made a 28mm f2 though! Hope that helps!

    @@Peter-df1br No problem. I love the ZM's at the wide range, and have tested quite a few from both the Leica and Zeiss ranges. The 18mm ZM beats out the Leica 18mm -- optically I can't tell them apart but the Zeiss is more usable (filters etc) and feels better built. Sadly both are now discontinued. The 21mm f2.8 ZM beats out the Leica 21mm f2.8 (pre-ASPH and ASPH), and is a phenomenal lens. Haven't compared it against the more recent Leica Super Elmar though. I also prefer the ZM 25mm to the Leica 24mm 2.8 ASPH. For the wide lenses, the Zeiss brightline finders are also much better than the Leica ones, even more so if your wear glasses. The ZM 35mm f2 Biogon also easily matches the Leica 35mm f2 Summicron. Hard to tell them apart. The Leica 35mm Summilux models are technically better than the ZM 35mm f1.4, which has a character and bokeh that is a bit peculiar and you either love or hate, plus it's pretty bulky. The ZM 50mm f2 Planar beats the Leica 50mm Summicron. Haven't tried the $$$ APO though. The Leica 50mm Summilux (pre-ASPH and ASPH) are technically better than the ZM C-Sonnar, which is also a bit of a love/hate lens too but has oodles of character. Leica has more choice in its lens range... like the 28mm f2, the wide Summilux offerings (out of my price range) and at the tele end too (75mm and 90mm), plus things like the Noctilux. Some have described the Leica lenses as having more of a warm glow and Zeiss more of a 3D pop. Maybe. Certainly in colour the ZM rendition is a bit cooler and Leica a bit warmer. One thing I would say is that for the most part, at equivalent focal lengths and apertures, they actually have more in common than they are different. Both are streets ahead of equivalent fixed focal length Nikon or Canon SLR glass. There are subtle differences in rendition but it's easy to make subjective and objective arguments in support of one or the other. I even know Magnum photographers who prefer Zeiss over Leica, and vice versa. Price wise, Leica has shot up in price over the last 20 years -- they used to be about 50% more expensive than the ZMs, but now they are sometimes triple the price. The huge price difference is really because of Leica business strategy, not the objective quality of the lenses.

    @@taneltinnuri8985 I bought it for weddings for low light but am not shooting many now (especially with Covid) so I never use it. I tend to shoot 50mm.

    I got it for weddings for low light wide angle stuff but now use the Leica Q instead.

    Would I be happy with the Leica 50mm f/1.4 and 28mm f/2? Yes. But I am maybe even more happy with my Zeiss ZM 50mm f/1.5 and 28mm f/2.8. Why? Because I spent a total of about $1,700 on those two lenses (bought new in Tokyo) and I am much more comfortable shooting and traveling with a kit that’s $6,000 cheaper. Plus both of the Zeiss lenses are quite good and have lovely rendering.

    Quite good? I actually prefer the Zeiss wides against the equivalent Leicas (18mm f4, 21mm f2.8, 25mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 35mm f2). I'd like a 28mm Summicron, but hard to justify $3500 extra for an extra stop that I rarely need, and the 28mm 2.8 Biogon is probably my favorite lens of all time. The Zeiss ZM 50mm 1.5 Sonnar is also a terrific lens -- a bit of an acquired taste compared to the more optically perfect Summilux but some users actually prefer it. I own both ZM and Leica glass but find myself using ZM more at the wider end.

    @@ssmith954 I have a 50mm Summicron VIII, and a 135mm f/4, the rest of my lenses are Zeiss and Voigtlander. I think that the Zeiss lenses are better than Leica in a lot of ways, such as better flare resistance and I think Zeiss lens hoods are superior for quick filter changes too.

    Zeiss optically are great but they can be a lot bigger than Voigtlander/ Leica (especially Voigtlander)

    I sold mine too and replaced with the sharper Voigtlander Ultron 28/2.8 v2. TriElmar - nice!
