Katazome is specifically Japanese but I'm sure many cultures have similar techniques to get similar results. Our sensei told us about different kinds of indigo that grows all over the world and how different cultures developed their own indigo dyes and dyeing methods, independent of each other centuries ago, which honestly, is so cool to me.

so happy I clicked on this in my recommendation. I never thought about zero waste fashion. I remember when I bought this expensive fabric for a dress and I secretly kept the bits that I thought was too wasteful to throw away, but totally useless... and I still have those bits lol The book with the story of colors is also very interesting, didn't know that book existed, totally going to get it. Thanks for the book review!

Loved this Auntie Zoe! A couple of those books need to be MINE! When I first got into fashion/ when I had the idea to get into fashion, I felt like I HAD to buy those fashion magazines, that I NEEDED them but like you I haven't bought one for years because it doesn't define me as a creative or a designer! But I might pick one up just for the experience you had on the plane!

Talking about rotary cutters was the first giveaway. Pro cutters use electric knives, and those big vertical electric knives for mass production. But that's a not a big deal in understanding fabric.

Hi Zoe, I just want to thank you for your amazing videos. You are awesome as a teacher, generous and funny. I have been drawing for five months now, following your videos. I have seen most of your playlists concerning fashion illustration, how to render fashion, fashion design process, watch me design a fashion collection...Now I am interesting in diving into how to improve my figure sketches, how to draw flats and how to know more about fabrics and color theory. I was wondering if you could recommend some books about how to me improve my illustrations and how to draw flats. And I would like to know your opinion about this book : "Color: how to use it" by Marcie Cooperman. Lots of love from Somo, a beautiful surf spot in the north of Spain

A Capitol Death by Lindsey Davis. Some of the last people to see the murder victim was a family of Murex dye makers. The book does go a bit into the process of making the dye, how you needed to thousand of snails to get enough dye. Also it smelled horrible.

@@zoehongteaches No the murder victim was flung off the Tarpeian Rock. Book is set in ancient Rome in 89 AD. The victim worked for city and promised some poor murex dyers a chance to sell fabric to the Empire and then they would become the official supplier and get more contracts out of it. In reality he didn't have that kind of pull and murex dyers went home mad and empty handed.
