I agree with every word you said. I was raised in government housing. We were dirt poor. My pop pop told me when I was younger born poor always be poor. I carried that mindset with me. I quit school in the 11th grade. I got my GED three months later. I struggled for several years and realized I didn’t want to live that way anymore. Through your exact words “Hard work and perseverance.” I am a lineman, I make six figures a year. Not handed to me. Blood sweat and tears got me here. We see the work you put into this farm. You wear so many hats and you get it done still. Keep on keeping on Josh! You are doing great things.

Amen, Josh!! Work ethics in this country have gone down the toilet! I can go into my story, but who besides me would really care? The point is, that I made the choice not to be poor once I became an adult. And, that choice has paid off for the most part!!

well...I'm not just a farmer buddy....and my land cost less than the average 3 bedroom house in America! That's how ....$2k or less per acre, and you can still get land around here for less than $3500 an acre...but it will need a lot of attention

Spot on, brother! I was born last in the middle class, married young while in college. We made a combined $15k working through school. Had my 1st kid on the Medicaid. Wife went to medical school on the Army’s dime, and I worked. She finished training, and I went back to school to be a PA, 3 kids by then. I’m now “retired” at 51 building a farm/homestead. I work harder now than I ever did. I’m always behind on something that needed to be done last week, but that’s why it’s a lifelong process. If you have the drive, work ethic, and character to build up your skills and help others along the way, you can do whatever you want. God has been good to me, and I thank Him daily. But you can’t sit back and it just be handed to you. And you can learn something from most anyone if you choose to, even the idiots. If they don’t have anything to offer, why be around them? Keep doing what you’re doing Josh. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years.

Now that you've retired, as long as you're taking care of yourself I think that's awesome! I could have stayed in the USAF and retired at 38 years old...plenty of "retired" folks in their 40s nowadays.....you and I both know that 25 years goes by in the blink of an eye!!

Well said Josh! I consider myself successful. Am I rich..... no, not monetarily. Do I have lots of land..... no. That was not my priority. I went to university in Canada, got a degree, never used it. Went into aircraft maintenance, got laid off, went back to school and got my RNs. 25 years of nursing later, I have a house that is paid off (after 14 years, ) a wife of 37 years, three adult kids, and two grandchildren. To me that is success. Times were tough when I got laid off. We had two kids and a mortgage...... but hard work made it happen. What I have, is happiness, a home and savings for my retirement. My job allowed for a good pension plan, which I took advantage of. Do I care that my neighbour might have more than me? No. Good on him if he does. I am satisfied with where I am and what I have. I think that is the issue with a lot of people. They want more than they need, and thus feel they have been shorted when they haven't achieved that level.

I agree 100%. I used to watch George F. Will. He was a Journalist, he liked baseball. I liked his soft intellectual style. Then I started reading the Wall Street Journal 'editorial section'. And Limbaugh. I'd say it a different way Josh. Find people you want to be like and emulate them, do what they do! I'd go to Southdale Library, I started reading Founding Fathers books. If I kept it up; I'd be a Constitutional Lawyer now, and on News Max as a Contributing Commenter! HA! I'm happy! I am relatively poor, but I was a successful Doctor's son. So my childhood was nice. Now I'm a worker, with an interesting mind, and talent. BA Liberal Arts degree. I like the Save America movement, makes me feel glamorous. Makes me tick. Money or no. I work for money. Thanks for video Tommy Boy! LOL!! Wooo!

Good stuff Josh.. We immigrated to this great country from Italy when I was 5 years old.. We had nothing!!!! My mom and dad worked their butts off and taught us the importance of working hard.. My Dad always said "buy land and KEEP IT! This was imbedded in my mind!! I graduated from college, worked hard and started buying land.. I am 58 years old and retired from corporate America almost two years ago and now own and operate a cow calf ranch that my wife and I built together!!! Moral of my story, believe in God, believe in yourself, take risks, work hard, invest wisely and most importantly find your soul mate that believes in you and loves you unconditionally..

Most folks do not want to work hard at anything. They have been convinced by the movies that they should just get what they want just because they want it. The public school system has taught them to just be a slave worker for the system and not an independent achiever and a critical thinker.

Wow, best video you have put out. I don't watch every video you put and don't always agree with you but I never post negatively. I spent most of my growing up years living in a trailer. My parents taught me to work hard. For all of the "Shawn's" out there what Josh is saying is true. From the books he reads, to the idea of surrounding yourself with people that inspire you. As a little kid I wanted to be a farmer and never knew if I could. At age 55 I retired, bought a farm and am playing farmer. We have a boarding stable and a few rentals. So for anyone else out there reading my comment it is completely possible. I wanted a college degree, it only took me 13 years of going to college part time and working multiple jobs. Again GREAT video Josh.

Josh, Very timely video! We all need to turn off the tv and put the phone. Talk to hard working successful people. But remember, Ask Questions, Listen and if you didn't learn something from that person, as Josh said, choose to surround yourself with positive, intelligent people. They can be great educators. My wife taught me a valuable lesson. Before you speak, "ask yourself, does anyone care what I'm about to say?" And if you're not adding to the conversation, ask another question. We all love people who ask questions, and show an interest in us. That goes for our wife, husband, significant other, friend, etc. Thanks again for a great video, with good advice. Cheers! Bruce

Exactly 10:37. Yesterday I had to force my dad out the door to go to see fireworks. I told him, “I’m no longer a guy that’ll get spit on and let it ruin my day. Now, I go to the gun range, I save money to buy more guns and ammunition. Now I have bird feeders for the birds, I have one plant that grows and is not dieing. I got a picnic table for the squirrels. My great grandfather, your grandpa went to Europe for ww2 and won, never got shot. He did it again in Korea. Then he used his ability to work with little sleep to have 5 sons and be a successful real estate salesman. You once had that same ability, now you’re here, letting yourself get down over nothing. If everything works out next year, there’s gonna be none of this nonsense you’re doing. You’ll have to get back on the road of life.” Darryl Worley-sounds like life to me. God Bless The USA 🇺🇸

Josh, you make some very valid points. In today's day and age with the importance that is placed on "things' and instant gratification, it is easier to say that "I can't have what they have" and believe the negative that is associated with it. But maybe those "things" don't matter and it will for sure take years to achieve things, but it can be done. But unfortunately folks are conditioned to wanting it now! There are always circumstances and season's of life that make this tough but there can always be light at the end of the tunnel. I have been in a mental state where I judged what I had based against what some good friends had - it motivates to a point, but at the end I realized how far I had come and felt blessed for what I had - and my friends, I was happy for them!! People are not happy for another's achievements anymore - it is easier to trash talk them rather that congratulate them...a product of the negative society we live in. Negativity is easier to believe and positivity takes work.. Some great advice! Good job addressing this.

IMHO, no one can really say you haven't worked your rear end off for every thing you have, Josh. I've been with you a few years now, and seen what all you've accomplished thru sweat equity. You have every reason to be proud of yourself. And thank you very much for my freedom! Love the v8deos. Keep 'em comin'! 😊

I respect the hard work you’ve put in & I agree with not putting yourself or others down. I have a trailer park farm because while I don’t own the land, I have more than enough space for a bunch of raised garden beds. Do what you can, with what you have ❤ I just wanted to add it is considerably harder today than it was for you to own land. We’ve really been priced out of it.

respectfully speaking.....it's no harder to buy land now than it was 9 years ago...if you're looking in the right place my friend. It is NOT CONSIDERABLY HARDER!! That mentality is a barrier to success...however this isn't just about buying land...or starting a farm...it's about the mentality that somehow someone else has the power to keep ya down, or that luck or handouts is what gets ya somewhere. There's land for sale all over the country....and it's affordable land...but it's not convenient to the local Target .....Do what ya can, with what you have...I agree...and be happy!

Josh, you're absolutely right, every word you said you can't sit around waiting for somebody to give you something or something to happen. You gotta put in the work you gotta put in effort and you're right about surrounding yourself with people that are successful and like you said, study them see what they're doing to make themselves more successful. But you're right, Josh.

What Josh said is so very true. You do not need to inherit wealth to have land. In my 60 I received my first ever inheritance of almost $3500 which does not make it possible for anyone to make it rich. I have never made as much as teachers make but because I never spent all I made but worked side hustles. I now own more land than most people do and have a comfortable retirement income and a nest egg of more than I ever imagined possible. It is not necessary to have generational wealth but spending less than you make and working hard is essential.

Awesome video! Excellent answer! Shawn sounds like a guy who does not want responsibility. He wants someone to take care of him. I worked in a creamery for 31 years, saved, bought my own little ranch and built a small business raising angus beef cattle. I'm retired from the creamery and just work on my ranch. To get here, there were many 20 hour days. I never called in sick at work and I did everything myself at home. Mostly by hand. I fenced 20 acres digging post holes by hand. And on the 140 acres we lease, fencing is done by hand. Irrigation is all flood irrigated with a lot of hand work.

Well now. Living in America we all have the right to the pursuit of happiness, happiness is not a right just the pursuit of happiness. If owning land makes you happy then pursue that! People nowadays have been spoiled to the microwave where everything is fast and easy. When it comes down to the sweating and the real work it takes they are too LAZY to put forth the effort it takes to achieve that which they are pursuing. You’re doing great work Josh and you are an inspiration to many many people!

@StoneRidgeFarmer I agree with you 100%; it starts with a dream, hard work and perseverance. Sometime last year you spoke about procrastination and the importance of starting now and from that Sunday, I got up and started my journey of building a farm and creating Generational wealth; I am glad today I am in the beginning of that journey developing my 13 Acres farm. The great thing is principles work for all of us irrespective of where we are; I learn a lot from you although I am in South Africa miles away from where you are.

I doubt many also realize you showcase two different full-time gigs. The farm is one, youtube/social media another. And I'd be willing to wager there's a few more off-screen things you have cooking, never mind the mess that must be managing relationships with sponsors and such. Those two visible ones are a ton of work to begin with, so there's no reason not to spend some money to enjoy what you do. Glad to see the American dream on TV!

Hard work is not easy. You defeat yourself by saying you can't. Reasons you can't will always defeat you. Of course it is scary when you do something the first time but what a reward when you complete a task or project. You have to take the step as we did when we were infants. Stop listening to people that say you can't, take the step and try. Sometimes it takes two or three steps to complete moving forward. Get off your butt and do your dream, don't stop when it doesn't go your way and don't listen to folks that say you can't or it will never work. BE SUCCESSFUL and TRY! Dreams are not easy to achieve, but you can DO it. Look around and see the BLESSINGS that are around you. Listen and learn from words around us! You are so right Stoney Ridge a good rant, farmer rod

100% agree. I bought property and made it a farm. I went to trade school. I've met people at the local ymca. I surround myself with millionaires I met there. My property backs up to another person with cows. He wanted to retire this year. I made a deal with him to use his pasture and I will share crop his cows and mine. We both now get a percentage of what is sold but we also share the cost of feeding. Think outside the envelope.

Love the segment, Josh. I cannot agree more with your comments and the mention of 'privilege' is way out of control. This is especially true of anyone who has ever served (we are both Airmen, by the way, and both formerly from the medical profession); there is no privilege in that lifestyle, for certain, only what is earned. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us, inspiring ideas on how we may develop our own land and/or dreams.

Good rant Josh,,,,,, I too have been around wealthy successful people and they work their butts off and to get up there to the point where they use their resources and their knowledge gained over that time of hard work to make something of themselves. You are absolutely right that you should surround yourself with those kind of people. Bless you sometimes people need to hear a wake up call. I remember watching a thing on the History Channel I think about the founders in business and the craft brothers took 13 or 15 years to actually figure out how you pasteurize cheese . Then you might say they got lucky in World War II came along and they put their cheese in the rucksacks of all of the army and people accepted it then but before that there was a lot of bad press about it ... then they went ahead and it was accepted and they worked their butts off to build their company .. I think you are so right and this was so good to hear.. take care of my friend I am so happy for your success and I know you didn't get it overnight and it wasn't given to you right on.

I’ve worked hard and am now, as a 74 year old woman, I have it! I had negativity around me in my sister living with me and since she left there is such a relief. I watch every homesteader I can and pick up such great ideas. I study every successful person and try to emulate each one. My husband and I aren’t rich but we love what we have!!
