Having a working dog vs keeping a dog in a backyard, chained up, with no shelter, interaction with humans, especially the "owner", are two VERY different things. And there is nothing wrong with having a working dog who spends a lot of time outdoors. People need to understand the difference.

  • @helenemalenfant5435

Exactly. Thank you for making this critical distinction. Some breeds are predisposed to ‘work’ and to be challenged. After Babe so many people got border collies and it was a disaster for so many dogs. They are smart and active and can become neurotic and destructive if just left alone for hours a day in a family with both adults working long hours and not prepared to put in the time they need to adequately engage their minds and bodies, just as one example.

Thank you for saying all this, Vanessa! We had a farmdog when I was a child, a German shepherd mix, who was guarding the farm and protecting us. We didn't have to train him at all, he went by instinct to do the job and he did it a 100%. Other things like "sit, leave it", walking next to us on a leash , where he was allowed or not allowed to go - we just sort of showed him once, and he remembered it forever. My father gave him baths but he never went to a groomer. He was taken to the vet when he needed to, mainly for check ups, I only remember a couple of ear infections on top of that. He was not a bit overweight as he was running around all day. He was dirty but he didn't smell bad. He ate big portions of food, but we never gave him treats. He was very calm and affectionate with us, but he was mainly attached to my Dad. Watching your videos, I sometimes imagine what he would have looked like after a professional groom 🙂 .

I had a German Shepherd when I was younger and the Shepherd dogs really are the biggest babies in the world. My favourite example of this was when we were out for a walk and he gave chase to a rabbit, normally he fails to catch them and they dive into their burrows. This time was different however, he managed to catch up to it, ran into it, the rabbit flipped and kicked booping him on the nose, this proved too violent for Max who came running back to me to hide behind me from the nasty rabbit.

I had a Maremma sheepdog growing up. He lived outside, protected the property from coyotes so that the farm cats could protect the plants from rodents and such. He was never bathed, the oils on his coat shed dirt pretty easily, but he was brushed regularly to help get his undercoat out. He wasn't abused or neglected, he was loved and allowed to do what he loved doing, which was protecting his property.

She looked out the window watching my place the whole time. A dog that is outside full time with the proper coat, food and shelter doing what it's genetics tell it to is not neglected. Neglected and should be criminal is the dog owner in Alaska, north of the Arctic circle who put their 4 month old pit bull outside overnight in -30°F weather. That puppy froze to death because the people didn't want it to have an accident in the house. Huge difference between a happy working dog and that puppy that wasn't bred for the climate.

They stay outdoors year round (except when Abby Dog got a cut on her leg, and had to stay indoors doing a sad imitation of a lampshade so she wouldn't get the wound dirty). Their coats are so insulating that the weather only bothers them when it's hot. Then they dig holes under various bird buildings so they can be out of the sun and in nice cool ground to sleep. The dogs do have a shelter to get out of the worst of the snow/rain in the winter, but hardly use it. And omg do they (especially Abby Dog) get dirty 😂.

My grandfather grew up on a pig and cattle farm (he was born in 1930). They had cats for the mice and whatnot in the barns, and dogs for herding the cattle. He said the dogs only came inside when it was too cold outside, and even then, they stayed in the foyer or mud room. Great-grandma wouldn't let them in the house proper. I have a dog (a cattle herding breed at that) and a cat and they're both pampered little indoor critters who are spoiled rotten. Grandpa jokingly says that I "use them backwards." 🤣 And trust me, the dogs and cats and all the animals on that old farm weren't neglected or abused. "We had to go take care of all the animals before we were allowed to take a bite of our own breakfast, and after school, we had to tend them again before Mama would let us have any supper. The animals always came first. They were the most important."

It's kinda funny because she will start falling asleep but then will force herself to get up and start pacing for me to take her out. She likes sleeping in her dog house, cold cement, or in the dirt/grass. She just prefers being outside. She has a pretty good dog house and we built a little lift thing so the house is lifted off the ground incase it rains and it's kept under a shaded patio so I'm not too worried about her. He could only got like 5 feet in front of his dog house, even though they have super big property out in the middle of nowhere. He soon became aggressive and went insane because he wasn't looked after and had to be put down. I wish I was old enough to understand what they were doing was absolutely neglectful and cruel.
