They think they’re College Humor/Dropout, but even Dropout’s paywall is pretty loose, in that they release a lot of material for free as advertising. There’s also probably like 50 people working there, with a bunch of on-screen performers. If any KZread channel collective would be able to pull this off, maybe Rhett and Link’s empire could but even they’re not doing that.

I've been watching them since like 2016, and it sucks they're doing this. $6 might not sound like a bunch, but I'm supporting my household as much as I can since my parents are both out of work (my mom has heart problems, my stepdad is looking for a job but hasn't had much luck), and that money has to go to actual necessities like bills and food. Plus, I don't think their output justifies it compared with other streaming platforms that have way more content than 1 vid per week.

That's the thing, even if everyone COULD afford $6, they put out about 2 hours worth of content a month (in comparison to Dropout and Nebula, other youtuber-based paid platforms, which put out more than triple that amount per WEEK for the same price) Ik they've posted an update now and are turning the new platform into "Basically Patreon but they have more control", which I'm not totally against, but their original decision was unbelievably off-base lol

They should've made behind-the-scenes, extended episodes, or exclusive content if you're a tier 3 patron or hell, create those KZread memberships where you can pay them for some extended videos or something in return or a Kofi! There are so many options they could've gone with but a streaming website? that was a big ass leap! considering some of their audience can't pay for stuff yet or aren't financially doing alright, and the others who CAN, think this is such a horrible idea Edit: Sorry if I'm being a dick about it in my comment, but I don't think Watcher should've don't that at all it was a way to risky leap

No you're 1000% correct they should've just made a damn Patreon to upload an exclusive video once every so often. Now that they're fully behind a paywall the decline in viewership will be biblical. Easily lost 90% of their viewers. Turned tens of thousands of dollars in ad revenue per video to a couple grand at best per video. Now Watcher is going to have to either: A. Realize they screwed up, and undo what they did. or B. Follow through for a few months before they realize their financial situation is in dire straits and likely just stop producing videos as a whole. I mean, seriously, this is like what collegehumor did, but so much worse. Because, at least with collegehumor, it wasn't just the same two dudes and one or two side characters. This is insane. Nobody cares about puppet history, or the food thing they did for 2 videos, or the video games... I mean the only reason you'd even subscribe in the first place is just for the paranormal and unsolved content, so it's absolutely ridiculous. This would be like if Netflix just had one TV show.
