The situation was exactly like now. There was a big fascist movement in the US (like everywhere else) and many isolationists, who were strongly against sending this aid to the UK.

One of the major problems with NATO at the moment is the other countries not pulling their defense budget weight, abusing the massive American defense budget so that they can put their money into their own social services...and that needs to change. They only need 2 friggin percent. With the social services problems in the US with the massive migrant crisis, illegal immigration, mental health, veterans care, inflation and massive wealth loss for the lower middle class/working class/regular people, child poverty, and homelessness in the US, maybe the threat to leave will be the kick in the ass that many of the NATO countries need to step up according to the NATO contract that they themselves signed. Out of 30 member states, only 7 hit their 2 percent quota in 2022...that is 23 NATO members not contributing their share, and putting the burden on the American taxpayers, resources that could go to our own needed social services. It has been that way for a long time, and that needs to change.

Yeah well, Australia has always paid its way with its defence treaty with America in every war since 1941 and it even let Washington off the last of the reverse lend-lease payments of WWII. Yet the two times Australia has asked for American military support being West Irian and East Timor, the Yanks didn’t turn up. So a country paying its fair share does not mean that a military alliance will be upheld, no matter what the history.

European countries need to step up aid on Ukraine and not rely on America to do the heavy lifting.

There is a definite feeling in the United States among both the right and left to focus less on international issues and more on domestic issues. How far each side wants to take it varies depending on the person and the political persuasion, but it is there and it is growing.

They need to understand that they do not and cannot live completely in isolation. Climate, trade and other issues are not things that can be done in isolation. Trump's anti-climate coalition has global consequences. Also the activities of US-based multinational corporations on the world-stage should not be underestimated, especially in the energy and weapons sectors. It's very "convenient" to withdraw from international issues but still sell weaponry to unstable states.

There are idiots on both the Right and Left in America who think that the US isn't still dependent on the rest of the world. The shale oil boom will run out in years not decades. If the US hasn't gotten over its oil addiction by then we will be even more dependent on the Middle East and other unstable areas of the world for oil. The shale oil boom has given the US a short respite to get off our oil addiction, but by all indications it appears it will be squandered and we will be right back where we were, in another decade. The problem with humans, they are just to damn stupid to function in a modern technological world. Natural selection didn’t create intelligent humans they are the aberration not the norm. It created cavemen who we are trying to make into technocrats. We are swiftly approaching the great filter. I honestly don't give humans another five hundred years.

I am more nervous about Europe being so passive and not ramping up military spending in every single country of EU and NATO and give Ukraine anything and everything. With many top positions being taken by foreign powers inside of Europe in ministries and the UK thinking that Brexit would solve anything, and with Germany's power only a remnant of its shadow, Ukraine (and Poland) is the only one daring to see the problems of this world.

How can Sweden not have the confidence that they and the whole EU cannot repel or even defeat Russia? What they have been up to all these years in these European countries? I am sure they have the know how and the possibility to manufacture and ramp up production in their countries isn't it? Why are they relying on the US so heavily? I thought Europe and its European Union have the strength to stand on their own and be even more creative to repel any adversary and here we hear from Sweden a doubt of not having confidence. 🤔🤔

Because an alliance like NATO is an alliance and you plan for it. But if US leave us, we will be able to handle our self. But it will be drastic and it will hurt the relationship, because then Europe for the next many decades will not trust US and act accordingly. You know when US have called for help almost all eurupoean countries have been there. So this is not a one way street.

Not sure why other countries give a shit? My country literally pays for their military and healthcare. Why would my country give a fuck at this point?

In Europe we have to move away, fast and furious from the US. Exclude Hungary from voting rights and scale up the European defence. We are looking ahead some tough years, but sometimes a good crisis in nessesary to make a huge step forward.

What started as a "marriage of love" has degenerated into a business marriage of convenience that will end as soon as the "weakest party" is convinced that it can stand on its own two feet. The "other" party saw this coming for a long time, but is still surprised that they dared to take the step. He was left orphaned, wondering how things got to this point, but there is nothing more he can do about it.

Of course, one Putin is more than enough, don't need an American one as well

Let's be honest other countries take America for granted to save the world. America can't do it by itself. All we ask is participation of other countries to follow our lead. Allies sits on the sidelines or send minimum help or hesitant during time of crisis. Countries has not followed NATO's spending guidelines 2%GDP for National Security. Trump in 2016 called out other countries for the above reasons.

Why would Australia consider China a security threat? China is Australia’s biggest trading partner. It has been beneficial to peoples of both countries. What on God’s earth would Australia benefit from decoupling from China. It is a completely incomprehensible international policy, taking a position against self interest. Whatever, it is confusing as heck.

Of course it's in Australia's interest not to decouple from China, but Australia has made it very clear that they don't like China's Taiwan ambitions, their ludicrous claims to the entire China Sea or their civil rights record. Australia has some moral compass at least and has become a refuge for Chinese asylum seekers (probably since the Tiananmen Square days). China has already shown it has no hestation in putting weakly disguised trade bans on Australian goods to punish it for its attitude. Trade is good, but not if one country weaponises it. Australia is constantly seeking new markets because of this.

China threatens to take the entire region down to Australia and if that happens, they can easily isolate Australia from the rest of the world. Then all trades will be on China's terms and Australia will always be in a huge risk of being attacked by China as well if China think it benefits them to do so. And the reality is that Australia would struggle extremely much against China if they are to be alone in the fight against China.
