STORYLINE:
A far-right activist from Denmark received permission from police to stage a protest outside the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm on Saturday where he burned the Quran, Islam’s holy book.
Surrounded by police, Rasmus Paludan carried out his protest while making disparaging remarks about immigrants and Islam.
About 100 people gathered nearby for a peaceful counterdemonstration.
Turkish officials condemned the Quran-burning protest on Twitter, and Swedish authorities for allowing it.
Swedish officials have stressed that freedom of expression is guaranteed by the Swedish Constitution and gives people extensive rights to express their views publicly, though incitement to violence or hate speech isn't allowed.
Demonstrators must apply to police for a permit for a public gathering.
Police can deny such permits only on exceptional grounds, such as risks to public safety.
Turkey also announced on Saturday it cancelled a planned visit by Sweden’s defence minister on January 27 in response to the Nordic country’s issuing of permits for anti-Turkish protests.
It is the latest backlash from Turkey.
The NATO member has been holding off on approving Sweden’s application to join the military alliance until the Swedish government cracks down on groups that Ankara regards as security threats.

this is gonna end with a one earth policy ...... may the battle in the favor of the messiah.
I personally do not sympathize with burning books as a method of arguing a point of view. It is counterproductive. That said, it should be everyone's right to hold and publicly argue for the opinion that any specific political, philosophical or religious ideology is bad/false and potentially might be a threat to an open and free society. The price we pay for a free non-authoritarian society is that bad people sometimes say bad things. If we tolerate this, it is not because we agree with their views, but because once we have compromised the principle of the right to free expression, we are paving the way for a future authoritarian tyranny. Look around the world. There is certainly no shortage of examples where people who do not have the "right" opinion are imprisoned and sometimes tortured and killed.

Here's a story about what it means to be Muslim (from a syrian girl) As Syrian/Muslim I can speak only for myself. Why would I want and aim to go to the Middle East/Gulf area when they locked the door in our face from day 1 ?! My brother lives in Qatar. He tried to get us out of the war but Qatar was the first to shut us off. Then I travelled to Dubai in 2012, found work there and it was GOOD work but the government simply kept refusing my papers only because I’m Syrian. I went back to the war, stayed in Syria for a couple of months till death nearly got me, then the whole family decided to move out. Thinking of a land to accept us but no where except Egypt at that time. Both my parent are university professors and I work in the ad industry. As soon as we got to Egypt they labelled us “refugees” although we never went into the process there and we were living by our own savings which we spent it all there because we were treated like foreigners when it comes to rents. My house rent was double the salary I received in Egypt. Then Egypt failed big time when they refused to host any Syrians and Dad was on the same plane that day arriving in Cairo only to be made to wait for 9 hours and then shipped back to war to die alone in Syria after 6 months. The Saudis has never gave us visas. Whoever says that they did is a liar and let them show me the documentations for that, they indeed extended the visas and did reunions to families but with loads of complications on documentations/studying/working there. Ask people you know there, Saudi and the Gulf area is the biggest & richest countries, they keep sending money that we never saw in real life and we keep asking for help not money but they think they can save us with money when what we really need is humanity and humans. That’s why I’m in the Netherlands now, I took refuge here after I hated each and every Arab country. At last I found a country that respects, cares and welcomes me as a human being. It is not Islam. It is humanity that we search for in times of war, not anything else.

Well as a firm believer in free speech I'm not one for advocating burning books of any kind but I'm wondering if he'd consider burning any bibles too? Both books contain some truly abhorrent stuff. I'm also a firm believer that any religion that makes ludicrous and bold claims leaves itself wide open to scrutiny and possible ridicule. I wouldn't burn a Quran or a Bible but I have no respect whatsoever for either of them.
Quran 61:8 They wish to extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah will ˹certainly˺ perfect His light, even to the dismay of the disbelievers. Russia-affiliated journalist paid for Quran burning in Sweden. Swedish journalist Chang Frick, affiliated with Russian propagandist channel RT, paid for Danish far-right activist Rasmus Paludan to publicly burn the Quran near the Turkish embassy in Sweden. Swedish media learned that while Paludan, who also holds Swedish citizenship, traveled to Stockholm specifically for the protest, his application fee for the demonstration permit was paid by Frick. Latest reports said that Frick also paid for Paludan's plane ticket to Sweden. This is assumed an action to make Turkey angry and not accepting Sweden into NATO.

It's a tricky question. Is it about the fact that apparently many people have difficulty distinguishing between a representation and what is represented? It seems that Islam has a harder time with this than, for example, Christianity. Could this be due to the fact that Islam has traditionally purged all symbolic images (representations) from its religious practice, while Christianity, and especially the Orthodox, is overflowing with this. The only thing Islam has is the "book" and its recipient, which is almost idolized and therefore given an excessively great importance as a physical object.

It is the first translation which *includes the ten Qira'at (modes of recitation).* The main text is written in accordance with the most commonly used Qira'at that of 'Asem, narrated by Hafs. Variations from that are presented in footnotes denoted by 'Q'. *The translation presents around 30% of the variations of the Qira'at - those which affect the meaning and can therefore be demonstrated in translation.* The rest are merely dialectical and cannot therefore be demonstrated in English. 2. Rather, this distinction was achieved by adding a superscript after nouns, pronouns, and imperative verbs. For example: you[pl] is used for a plural pronoun, you[sg] for a singular pronoun, and you[dl] for a dual pronoun. Likewise, imperative verbs such as "say" are expressed as say[pl] for a plural verb, say[sg] for a singular verb and say[dl] for a dual verb. *It must be noted that in the Qur'an most imperative verbs in the singular form are meant to address Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).* . *Muslim missionary eBook:* _Bridges' Translation of the Ten Qiraát of the Noble Qur'an by Fadel Soliman._ _(the link has been removed because youtube or this channel censored link posted in comments)_

Okay, look at it this way. What if some guy decided to stand on a field and burn the flag of Liverpool football club? Would that be an attack on the football club? Should the whole team refuse to play matches in the country this happened in? Would Liverpool-fans have to protest all over the world? Because of ONE person deciding he dislikes Liverpool and the Liverpool-community, and he burns their flag? This is non-sense. Let Paludan have his opinion about Islam. It doesn't affect anyone. Let him believe that Muslims are terrorists. Let him burn that book. It doesn't stop you from knowing he is ignorant and childish. It doesn't stop you from believing. This shouldn't be an issue of an entire country. This should just be what it is - something no worse than a football fan hating another football club... Ignore it, and move on. Don't enforce laws against burning the Quran, let him do it. Don't protest against his Quran-burnings. Just ignore it. Don't even discuss it. Just let it be, and nothing will happen. Nothing at all.

And?

Something is quite wrong in this story. I am from Egypt and i have many friends who came from Syria and they're living normally next to us and there's not even any hatred towards them. Even though Egypt is borderline defunct nation they managed to strive and running many businesses here. What's true from the story is that other Arab nations had different treatment for the Syrians at which most gulf nations didn't treat them well and it is a shame that we all here carry in our hearts but at the end of the day it is in the hands of the governments not the people. I can elaborate more if u want and i'll be much unbiased as much as i can.

There are 2 parts concerning this abominable act. The first part is I do believe that there is a party in the Swedish government who is against joining Nato for some reason, it is well known that Sweden allowing this circus would make the negotiations with Turkey in order to join Nato, very difficult considering the fact that all members in Nato would have to approve the new candidate country. The second part is, The boundary of freedom of speech ends when it is deprived of respect and morality towards others. I wonder if the Scandinavian countries would allow the burning of the LGBT flag or the Torah. The answer is NO, so why is this paradoxical handling of freedom of speech? Apparently freedom of speech applies when it fits certain agenda. I'm so disgusted by such behavior and all people/governments who support such an act

Sweden is the home of the swedes and the only home in the world that we have and in our home we set the rules, not you and certainly not Turkey or Egypt. If you don't like the way we set the rules for our home the you are not welcome to our home. We have many opinions about the islamic world and your practices of honor culture, gender mutilation, blasphemy laws and more but understand that we don't set the rules in your home country and keep our opinions to ourselves. It is perfectly legal to dispose of any material property in any manner you wish here given that you do so in a responsible manner that does not put other peoples lives or property in danger. If you want to burn the rainbow-flag or the torah in Sweden you are perfectly within your rights to do so. Also, Rasmus Paludan is a dane and not a swede and is the leader of the political party "Stram Kurs" in Denmark and to my knowledge have no sentiments towards Sweden joining NATO in one way or the other. The only swedish political parties that have a negative sentiment towards joining NATO is Vänsterpartiet (Leftist party) and Miljöpartiet (Green party) who are politically polar opposites of Rasmus Paludan. In short, you know absolutely nothing about Sweden and I suggest you inform yourself before you take the liberty to form an opinion on us and when you do so you keep it perfectly clear in your head that in Sweden we decide what is right and wrong, not you or anyone else.

Our freedom of expression is more important than a military alliance. We decide what is right and what is wrong in our country. Not you or anyone else.

@@Teutathis I'm just saying what is. If you insult a country and its president, you will get what you deserve. I am an atheist. But I am against the burning of religious books. It raises hatred. If Muslims in your country do not follow democratic laws, solve your problem with them. Deport from the country. Otherwise, burning books is not the solution. I did not believe that such events would happen in Sweden. It is against democracy to take the side of such a fascist, a pedophile.

@@kingofozymandias And I'm telling you that NATO membership is not worth us giving up our values and freedom of expression. I, as most swedes, think what Paludan is doing is stupid and we have many opinions on the man himself but we would defend to the death his rights to burn the quran as it is a protected action under the laws of freedom of expression. Criticism against religion is a foundational right in our societies that will never be given up because some other countries may take offense. Additionally, keep in mind that Sweden and swedes have many opinions about the islamic world, its legal systems and cultural values that we keep to ourselves because we understand that we have absolutely no place to speak on how other countries and its citizens conduct themselves in their own countries. Imagine if you were to see thousands of swedes burning the turkish or egyptian flag tomorrow because their citizens burnt ours? That's never going to happen and its not because we're affraid.
