I honestly think FarCry 6's map is too big. They did a good job at filling in the empty spaces, but it was such a hassle to get around, especially for some one who prefers not to fast travel. FarCry 5's map was perfect IMO.

Farcry 2 is the largest in my heart. I spent hundreds of hours as a kid on it.

does "playable area" include the water where you can ride a jet ski or is that accounting for only the land areas you can physically walk on?

Farcry 5 had the best map and area to explore in my opinion. Montana just felt amazing to traverse through

Far Cry 3's map felt bigger, maybe due to nostalgia or my first FC game experience.

It's half the size of the second island in fc3 so yeah definitely smaller. Doesn't help that your character has a massive speed boost lol but it was fun and easy to run everywhere

far cry 6 is the best map in the game cause i like big map especially when you fast travel but clearly like far cry 6 tho because of the weapons vehicles and all the secrets

@@youngknight5589 Probably not much. I hate how Ubisoft is making there open world games more and more bloated every single year that passes by. For years people said they are making there worlds too large and what did they do with Far Cry 6? They almost doubled it's size and filled it with more bloat. It's beyond a joke now IMO. They just keep making the worlds bigger and bigger for no good reason other than to artificially increase the amount of hours the game can take to do everything and make it seem like there's more to do when really it's still just the same old bloat.

Just because the point of open world games is to be able to explore a large place, it doesn't mean the games should become larger and larger infinitely. It's fine if a game gets larger in each new game that releases in it's series, but only if the content can make up for it and not be bloated with copy/paste slightly modified content. While it may be very old, Daggerfall is a perfect example of this. The game is just too damn big and impossible to do everything in and even though far cry is much more modern, there's nothing about modern day far cry that would work in a world of Daggerfalls scale. To this day Daggerfall's successor Morrowind is still one of the best examples of an open world game that manages to be a pretty small world compared to newer games, but still is full of engaging non-bloated content all thoughout, making it feel larger then it actually is and more immersive. Size is not everything. "Why would you want a small map with almost nothing to do but missions." I never said I did.

Far Cry 3's map was so much smaller than FV6's and yet it was way more interesting to explore it.

this is some insane nostalgia bias,it was far emptier and less interesting,you just dont think 6 is that amazing because we are used to these large playgrounds these days,when far cry 3 came out it wasnt so saturated

Far cry 2 map for me was quite smaller compared to fc3 ... Idk my memory might be fcked up

Far cry 1 doesn't have an actual map. But if it did it'll def be pretty high on the list since it consists.of like 3 giant islands

It wasn't open world so not really fair but all the maps combined without the water were around 7-8km2. I really thought it was bigger back in the 00s

FC1 was semi open world, as in each map was very large (for its time) and allowed you to explore them pretty freely (again, for its time). Think kind of like halo, where it had large, open maps, but you couldn’t hop on halo 3 and go from the location in the first level to the location of Tsavo highway to the pier in The Storm, and then go back to Crow’s Nest all in a single session without ending the game and loading different maps to visit all these locations. Each level in Far Cry was either it’s own island, or a lot of the time, a different segment of the same island, and the creator would have had to stitch all of them together and figure out the playable area of each location, try to factor that in, and try to figure out the size of the entire overall “world” based on limited segments of it from each level, which would be hard to do

Far Cry 6 may be big but it feels very empty compared to the older titles. I feel like Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 5 had the best map size for the game and Far Cry 4 wasn't bad either.
