Fr, the badge of respect that the name Ubisoft would carry on the box of a game was massive Now, its just the same crap over and over, it doesn't work, its not fun, its glitchy, and nothing has a soul, its lifeless and boring corporate crap I know they are making a star wars and an Avatar game, i sure hope they dont finish them, because i know ill be disappointed

Yeah its wild that now the only games people actually respect from ubisoft anymore are the mario+rabids games, which is very ironic since rabies was easily the most hated ubisoft franchise when they still made decent games.

Far Cry 2 is so underrated. One thing I learned from it is that things don't always seem to be what you thing they are. You think you're using the factions to your advantage but in reality it is they who are using you even more. You think that you are making things better but in reality you just keep making them worse. You think that by eliminating The Jackal you'll solve things but in reality you're the reason why more weapons are being sold in the war. By causing all the chaos just to get to him. You're just like The Jackal. Only on an obscured mirror. Edit: According to animal symbolism which varies in different cultures I like to point out how the name fits him. Jackals and other wild beasts often appear in the Old Testament of the Bible as symbols of desolation. Hinduism associates the jackal with Kali, the goddess of death and destruction. Jackals are animals that resemble a dog. Because they're very smart, they're mentioned in many African folktales, where they're known as tricksters. A trickster fools the other animals and tricks them into doing things they don't want to do.

Far cry 2 is probably the most viscerally affecting game I've ever played. I remember playing the original far cry and loving it, but hating the difficulty spikes; but replaying it a lot regardless. I was very keen to get into this one and picked it up as soon as I had a PC that could run it. I got the difficulty-spike-ectomy I was after but instead of that I got the sheer gut punch of how dirty it made me feel to play it. I started off loving the graphical step forward and general gameplay improvement, and ended up gritting my teeth and wading through the moral and ethical nightmare out of perverse bullheadedness. I wanted to see how low it would push me, and how it might possibly redeem my protagonist and when the opportunity came to literally kill myself in-character, I seized it with both hands. Far cry 2 me was an irredeemable scumbag who had it coming. I've never replayed it. I don't need to. It put me off any even vaguely 'real-world' themed shooter forever more, for which I thank the developers. Every time I see an advert for the latest Call-of-murder-the piss-out-of-brown-people I feel a tinge of revulsion and swear at the tv. Thanks so much for this video, it put into words my precise feelings far better than I could. I also find the new 'adress to camera' format very rewarding- you've always been good at describing of the emotional impact of a game and I feel that this direct, humanizing way of expressing it is working extremely well. Also, love the vest (singlet in the u.s. I guess). Totally irrelevant but I dig it a lot.

What were your thought on Far Cry 3? I thought it was about insanity. (I swear, this is not a joke) And how one goes down that path in pursuit of their fantasy. In like one mission, we can see that Jason, before travelling to the island, was not really someone special such as his bigger brother Grant, who was in the army, or Keith, the convident bastard. In the island, he saw change to make him a better person, but all he got was corruption. And becoming a monster, judging by one of the endings. And not... Colonialism, but maybe I'm just biased.

The most interesting assertion in this essay is that the protag character enters the country with 'good intentions', which is something that the developers seem to assume as well. What I found incongruent with those assumptions was that the PC was a mercenary. To wit: my 'intention' was to kill The Jackal. I didn't assume any high-minded morals (particularly when I am literally walking across the street to take jobs from either faction). What always bothered me about FC2 was there was never a moment that hammered home why your character (not necessarily you, the Player) should care about all the destruction they're causing.

The Jackal speaks more truth than some world leaders out there. Ubisoft quite simply made one of the most down to earth FPS game of all time. Ego is the only other motivation people have in Far Cry universe except money or blood diamonds. Half Life tells a story about how the right man in the wrong spot can make a difference... In FC2, you continue motivating current situation in its full form. You think you factions are helping you advance finding the Jackal, but they are just using you to gain power. You're forced to end your conflicts with bullets only so you will be called a monster by those who once thought you weren't even a threat to a fly. You finally also realize that theres a much bigger threat than you in Africa, the malaria disease kills more than your guns ever will and its going to take you next. You think you became a warlord yourself by simply sending people to their graves, when in reality you're digging one to yourself as well. The biggest moment in the game for me is when all of your buddies betray you for a suitcase of diamonds. They know why you were there to take it, but they all wanted to leave Africa in its current dying state so they can live better lives elsewhere. Your character is both a hero and anti-hero. I hope Ubisoft will remaster this game ASAP because this is the most impactful game they have ever made.

And honestly the story feels more like Jason was manipulated by the rakyat to become their “hero” and really was manipulated by citra. And the story was more about the ideology of becoming a hero is created by failures who sense of self control and a normal life then being a failure is the idea that people need to feel like a hero with a goal given to them to become a example to others. Great analysis! Adding to what You said, my theory is that the player IS the Jackal (maybe not literally, maybe yes). Notice how only you can see him, only you interact with him. Sure, Reuben talked to the Jackal, but maybe he was talking to you all along? Then he decided that maybe you can do some good, hence why he sents you on some missions later in the game. The point is, the player represents the idea of a mercenary - neutrality, the unconscious evil. The Jackal is the sentient / philosophical side of this archetype. When facing the inevitable, they both try to change, do something good for once - realising, that if the deed truly is to be done, the both sides must perish, the idea must die. The game plays with tropes from Heart of Darkness, and the protagonist / antagonist duo are the heart and the darkness. Only which is which, who is who...

I think there were Jackal references from the chef in Far Cry 5, hints that he's the same guy (same voice actor too) Nice little easter egg.

I started with Far Cry 4, but after getting Far Cry 2 for free on Xbox and playing it for a while, I fell in love with it. While extremely primitive compared to the later games, it's so good!! To see more people looking at this game critically is awesome.

16:56 I’m talking facts and you’re talking theory. You’re not a good person, you’ve just been lucky enough, you've never had to be otherwise. When it comes down to it, what a man can do is what a man will do, but believe what you want.

I really tried to get into this game but ultimately, the bugs left me with a sour taste. On my first playthrough, I only kept one save and after saving mid mission, the script broke and I was asked to kill a character that died too early to register as completing the mission. On my second playthrough, I had unlocked the south and was on my way to finding all the diamonds until I started exploring the prison early. On my way back, I saved at a safehouse and past that point the game would always crash once I got a certain distance from the house. Thankfully I had a backup save a few hours earlier so on my thirdish playthrough, I got all the diamonds again then went to do the assassinations only for the final target to despawn and auto complete the mission without payment which I only realized much later after overwriting both my saves.

Unfortunately yes the bugs are game breaking. Theres one bug where jackel would not interact with you in the very last mission. Its requires you to start the entire game again

Underrated gem. If you plan to buy it - and I strongly suggest you to do so - play with the Vanilla+ mod: it improves over many aspects of the game, including weapon balance changes, graphics and progression.

You need some more lights if you're gonna be doing wide shots like this. Great to see you more comfortable on camera now but it seems the low lighting is making your frame rate kinda shite.

I had Far Cry 2 on Xbox and the first gameplay I didn’t pay attention, I took jobs and killed and destroyed everything. Second play through I payed a bit attention to what they said but I didn’t think much of it. Third time all over again I dissected the game took it very slowly and tried exploring everything in the world. I understood a little bit in a emotional way, I think it’s like a world that’s in pure isolation or living hell made by broken men and big bubble that attracts them as well. I had to deliver passports for locals for their families while I’m just getting in fighting and destabilizing the locals in power with no improvement by the end of the game. So the ending gave me like a relief and chose my own way to leave and not from malaria. It’s okay that all games don’t have happy endings. Silent hill 2 for example and Far Cry 4

Excellent analysis as always. I like how the themes of the game can also be applied to real life. Just take a look at the Yugoslav Wars, easily one of the grimmest war in all of human history, where the goal of defending your homeland and fighting for independence became muddled with warcrimes, looting and plunder. It's a sad reality.

This core concept of consequences escalating far past what was even thought to be a remote possibility, reminds me of the Metroid games. (I'm sticking with the 2D ones for the sake of simplicity, and because it's more data.) Metroid 1 is simple: blow up some baddies and their bioweapons plant. Simple mission, no way this can spiral out of proportion. Metroid 2 (Return of Samus) is where the theme of utter devastation first shows up - you're not blowing up a bioweapons plant, you're rendering the entire (naturally occurring) species extinct. You are, however, "smart" enough to preserve one of them for science. Metroid 3 (Super Metroid): The baddies from the first game stole that one specimen you saved and used it to rebuild the bioweapons plant. So it needs to blow up again. And this time, the entire planet blows up with it. Metroid 4 (Fusion): turns out that species was ecologically important at controlling an even-more-dangerous parasite, you almost die, the cure leaves your character with weaknesses that persist for the rest of the series, and a space station gets infected from researching the aforementioned cure. By the time you get there, the station is overrun. And disposing of the parasite, blows up the station and another planet. Metroid 5 (Dread): turns out a bunch of other people were affected, but managed to quarantine it - until you walk in and accidentally open the containment vault in the process. The entire biosphere is taken over within minutes. You actually see this happen in-game in real time this time. Also the planet blows up again. And we don't have absolute proof that the parasite is extinct. The Prime games have their own escalation of nonsense with phazon as well. (Complete with the player character almost getting killed and having a completely different set of long-term health consequences, though we'll have to wait for Prime 4 to see if it's permanent. Oh, and two of the prime games involve a planet blowing up.)

I loved this game when I was younger. I wanted to get far cry 3 for the cool hunting but they didn't have it so I "settled" for this masterpiece I've been playing this on infamous and its so fun and brutal. I want to replay it without upgrading anything once to really feel the grit of the shitty weapons, just amass a useless horde of diamonds like that one scene from escape to madagascar
