So all this talk about cabs made me want to share a fun find: I found an empty Crate 2x12 cab from the 90’s Palomino series (the vintage off-white ones) on FB Marketplace for $50 that might be the best cab I’ve ever played. It’s an actual square instead of rectangle so it looks like a tiny 4x12 with the speakers in x pattern, made of plywood not mdf, and it’s built ridiculously deep, almost like a bass cab, so it has MASSIVE but clear and pristine low end. Currently running V30 and Greenback and I can’t express how wonderful the tone I’m getting through this thing. I just thought it looked like a cool cheap cab, never expected it to sound as good as it does. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen and almost no info online so it seems pretty rare, but if you EVER see one of these grab it immediately!!!

Holy shit, I just saw one that went with a Crate Vintage Club on facebook today. It wasn't $50....it was $200....but I've got a lot of experience with that series of amps and everything was very well built. I'm still considering grabbing it for that price, just to have an extra cab to roll with my boss katana head, at absolute worst case. It does have that look you described, of a mini 4x12.

In addition to my Mesa 4X12 I have a 1960B that is loaded with 90's era Mesa V30's. I also learned a trick from Trace at Voodoo Amplification, You wrap a piece of Crafting leather over the end of the center post, and when you screw the back on the cab it creates a tighter fit against the center post and pushes on the front baffle. Tightened the cab up nicely.

Lol you got it right the second try ste-fan. So many people get it wrong I’ve pretty much given up on correcting them. Thanks for answering so many of my questions. I would love to see a couple different tiers of budget rigs. Also and sorry if you’ve already done this, but I’d love to see some videos about dialing in different tones (thrash, death, etc) with different amps. Keep up the good work!

For a budget head I would keep an eye on older peavey tube stuff generally. Grabbed a triumph 60 head from GC for $145 the other day. If you can find a normal priced VTM or ultra/xxx just do it. If you're sleuthy you'll find the head for less than $500 and the extra $500 will get you a decent/good cab

I think $1500 could be a really mean rig. Lots of really great amps in the 800-1100 range and you can get a birch 2x12 cab and speakers for about $450.

I love my Marshall 1960 cabs.........because I got all of them for about $3-400 apiece. The cheap used market price is a huge reason for their popularity. Been debating ripping some of mine apart and changing the speakers out to some WGS green berets and V30s in a cross pattern. For what it's worth the jcm800&900 era cabs seem to be built better than the newer "lead" ones. I will be looking forward to seeing a video from you on experimenting with improving these cabs. I've often heard replacing the back piece with a heavier solid birch piece of plywood helps them out a lot. Cheers

Hey Kyle love the channel. New sub. Look forward to budget recommendations. Low mid high. New product only would be great as well. Not much of a used market here in Australia. Most of us are home players only. Episode on good tone for home use would be awesome as well. 50w-100w with 4 x 12 not really workable. Hope you get the chance on the Engl 25w amps soon! I gotta agree with you on cabs. The 1960 series is a popular cab no doubt. There are cabs that are built better for less money if we are talking new prices. The 1960a is $1449 now. A Splawn cab which really isn't talked about much is $850 to $1k depending on the speakers you want in it. The build quality on those is stellar. My Crate Blue Voodoo cab is actually really well made also but cheap because it says "CRATE" on it. The best Marshall cab I ever owned was the Mode Four. There is a MF280 (v30) or a MF400 (K100). If you find one of those, GET IT!!

Under $1000 you can get awn EVH LBX for $500 used, then cabs there’s a load available for about $500 from brands like peavey and evh, especially looking at the used market. Also guitar center actually has a bundle with the 6505mh and a 212 cab for $900.

I’m super interested to see that Marshall cab mod man. I just scored a 1960A for real cheap. I was thinking maybe a couple greenbacks or something similar for the top 2 speakers might balance it out. It seems like those things sound monstrous with greenbacks in them. I’m just basing that off of KZread vids and IRs though, not personal experience. After seeing this I gotta pop that cab open and check the screws and seal it up. Thanks for the advice!

Missed opportunity to mention those Harley Benton cabs for cheap rigs. I have a couple of the 212 cabs with v30's and they are really good for $300 cabs. They work well with all my amps, they are pretty lightweight, and they are great for recording.

  • @tobins6800

For budget rigs. $500, 1k, 1.5k. Then mix and match. Also, more on head vs cab then vice versa. That would also go hand in hand with budget effects, since many lower end would probably need em. For instance, Amazon basics OD, behringer od(s), Donner, nux, and so on. Might want to try some eq for effects loop f@#$ery as well. Thomann USA has the Harley benton cabs for low prices with V30s.

also, an issue i’ve found with many 2x12’s is the baffle is at a right angle to the rest of the cab. I noticed my favourite 2x12’s in my collection all have a slightly angled baffle. Way less boxy sounding. The same is true for 4x12’s, I actually try and avoid anything with a perfectly straight baffle

  • @eds4754

    @eds4754

I had about 8 Marshall 4x12’s in here recently and agree on the build quality. I actually find it surprising how many different speakers they can come with though; I always assumed the vast majority were T75’s but there are many with G12m25’s, G12H30’s, V30’s, G12C, K100’s. Also if you hunt down older 1960’s they can have G12-65’s, M70, M80, and all the older versions of greenbacks. T75’s are my least favourite, and are probably the most available on the used market. That’s not to say there aren’t a hell of a lot of 1960’s out there with good speakers in though. The hardware bothers me, particularly the plastic handles that are always broken, but I do find they almost always sound great mic’d up. They got something right with the dimensions and materials and I think a lot of amps are voiced to work with them. So many great cabs are based off those original 1960 designs; IMO sometimes something gets lost when they’re built to a nicer standard so it’s balancing owning a nicer piece of gear vs something that has THE SOUND.

I've always wanted a mesa 4x12, but the weight prevented me from ever getting one. I have the 2x12, and of course it sounds great, but it's not the same thing as the 4x12. I did however pony up for a Friedman 4x12. It's not as heavy/bulky as the Mesa, but still not ideal for moving by myself, especially up and down stairs. It sounds amazing, but I've never moved it since the day I got it. So now I feel like I need to get the Friedman 2x12 so I can have a matching cab to my Friedman amp and actually be able to move it by myself.

On the 2x12s: curious what your take on the vertical 2x12s is. I have a Soldano vertical 2x12 and it sounds amazing with most of my heads (SLO 30 and DSL20H are best through it). My application is mostly lunchbox heads as I’ve downsized to mostly 60w and under. FWIW the Orange 2x12 is good once broken in, but also recommend swapping one V30 for the G12H75 or M65. Really solid channel dude. Been lurking but definitely subbing. Best of luck!

I think 1000 to 1500 , I think it’d be hard to put together a tube rig with a decent cab unless you get into the 20 watt heads with big bottles . Dsl 20 , or a MT 15 and a 2x12 recto cab should be doable and I would think plenty loud around that 1500 mark . I really like the idea with those Friedman 2x12 cabs sounds like they run used in the ballpark of the oversized recto 2x12 new.

Hi Kyle. Happy New Year! Enjoying your content, but in regards to the Bugera amps and their liability issues you mentioned in this video when answering the budget gear question: This things keeps coming to the internet discussions again and again for over a decade now. I mean honestly this story is too old now. Yes, Bugera had their issues back in the day when they introduced themselves in the amp world, but not any more. I 've owned two of them (333XL-212 and Trirec) and they where both fine when it comes to reliability. The Trirec had a popping sound when changing channels (wasn't too obvious or annoying while playing) and the variable power knob was actually useless! Was good, but personally I never jelled with that amp. For my taste the 333XL-212 combo was much much better to the point that I 'd like to find a good head and purchase it. For now my Boss Katana MKII head keeps me very happy (although imho I believe that for high gain sounds one needs lot of time tweaking, especially using the software, in order to find a good tone. or grab some patches and tweak those to taste for faster result (?), that's what I did anyhoo). PS Could you please review the 333XL head and the Katana MKII (I know the latter has been done to death in the KZread land)? Thanks and take care.

Try an Ibanez Thermion 4x12 if you come across one. UK Vintage 30’s and built like a brick shithouse. Each half of the cab is entirely isolated from the other half so it makes it very tight. Lots of bracing and reinforcement inside the cab.

Can't wait to see Jet City 80 vs Ultra 120 and Peavey MS412 vs Carvin 412. Should be a great mixup video. Maybe go have a Jackson JS22 vs a Mitchell MM300 while you're at it. Film it all with the GTA price ticker in the corner...

Have you ever used or done a video using an attenuator? Also where’s the Orange amp love! Ever used a Rockerverb Mk3 would really like to see an in-depth review on one and how to use it’s built in attenuator for those of us that can’t properly push those high gain amps in our normal playing places. Great channel btw. I don’t hear any funny accent either btw. Everyone knows its wudder not water!

Maybe do a $500, $750, and a $1000 rig. Check out the Harley Benton cabs. If you get the vintage version, they come with V30s and the price for the cab and speakers is less than buying just the V30s themselves. Only thing is you have to order from Thomman and wait a few weeks for shipment if you’re in the states.

What's your most memorable moment playing a show over the years? Being around hardcore since I was young, I've seen a lot from a crowd standpoint, but never in a bands view. Also, have you ever considered looking into building your own cab and seeing where it could go from there. With your knowledge on cabs, and a youtube, maybe you could have business potential as well.

Hey Kyle! I know you're a fan of the Peavey Triple X head, but have you ever tried any of the combo versions? I recently picked up a Triple X Super 40 1x12. I swapped the stock speaker for a WGS Retro 30. It's better, but the tone is lacking quite a bit with the open back design. I ran it into a 2x12 with g12m creambacks and it sounded great. Any thoughts or opinions about them?

The Peavey Triple X 1x12 combos are amazing! Was yours the one with FX or a boost? I've owned the 60watt and that thing was amazing! I pulled the reverb tube and used the reverb knob as an extra top end/presence knobs

Hey Kyle, subscriber here. I kindly suggest as a viewer, to use different drives and boosts before the amps during the video to compare. It drives me crazy that you always have that TS9 and you never feature it or cycle through the many drives you have above the amp you feature. Also, love the tight thrash riffs, but can you play some lead licks and/or single note melodies, so we can here the articulation of the amps. Keep pushing and growing the channel, and keep up the great work Kyle

Hey Kyle I’ve been using the Marshall lead/jcm900 cab along side my laney gh50l and I notice all of the drawbacks that you have mentioned. I want to find a great 2x12 to match with the Laney with a pair of speakers that will help round off some of that harsh high end presence they are known for. I am considering an orange 2x12 with v30s or the new prs archon cab with the celestion v types. Any advice?

The Orange cab will definitely do this, but I also feel that cab sounds dark and boxy. Not familiar with how the V types sound, so I can't offer advice on that.

When I messaged them via facebook with a suggestion for their website, again Jürgen Gimpel replied himself. He's got his finger on the pulse.
