Here in Australia it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving (except for hands free Bluetooth). Yet it is legal to use a two way radio.

Back when phones were just phones, I suspect it wasn't a big deal to use them on the road. Now that people cannot use them without having their faces buried in them, the problem is much greater. Thanks for visiting!
I would also add to the conversation that 99.9% of police cruisers in the US (and for that matter most parts of the world) have laptops and radios in them that the vehicle operators use on a daily basis. It's well known and understood that the officer behind you on the highway is probably using their laptop (at highway speeds) to run your plates. A ham reaching for a microphone without taking their eyes off the road is no different than a law enforcement officer reaching for their microphone, or a 18-wheel truck driver using their citizen's band radio. People just see a bunch of LCD screens and assume you're doing moon-bounce propagation at 60 mph. There's just a lot about amateur radio that most people just don't understand. Also looking at your antenna setup, you can do moon-bounce on that thing, right? Hahahaha just kidding.... But seriously, can you? 73

Agreed! I'm sure you're aware that many police officers have been involved in accidents while using their computers or smartphone. They almost never suffer a penalty because of "qualified immunity." Regarding "moon-bounce," no, I can't do it. My rotator is only for azimuth and not elevation. Thanks for visiting!
