I think it's because when she became a noble she has to restrain herself from commoner like actions so we only see her chaotic side in her monologues unlike in the anime where she's still a commoner right up until the end of season 3 where she can be unreasonable and childish as much as she likes and there's no real problem with it.

Trust me, if enjoyed the anime enough to make a video about it, you’ll LOVE the light novels. I hadn’t really read in years before reading it, and picked it up on a whim. The novels are really, really, _really_ good, I can’t really express the effect it has had on me. It’s the best piece of fiction I have ever experienced, and reading the new translated chapters on J-Novel Club every monday has not only made it the best day of the week, but even became the only thing I actually enjoy despite struggling with depression. So uh, no, I’m not getting out of your case. Read it from the start, the series is good, but the adaptation is honestly pretty bad, at least season 2 and 3.

Honestly I think S2 and 3 are bad only in comparison with the novels. There's just too many subtle details that are difficult to adapt into an episode and too much material to adapt into a single season satisfactorily. An example, all the discussions with business partners and internal monologues Myne has as she analyses the situation is hard to animate in such a way that does not detract or confuse the audience or extend the episodes running length to more than is reasonable since it also airs on TV there is a strict limit to run time unlike Netflix or the like and some details are just too irrevelant, and tinier details like the description of the battle of Ferdinand and the foreign noble is hard to adapt properly. So I would say that S2 and 3 are good adaptations given it's restrictions, it's just the story has too much depth to be able to adapt it in an anime format so that such details are not lost. True to the title of the story the best way to enjoy a story is through a book. Well...most of the time.

I second this; even more so with how closely the two follow one another (or well; all three as the manga does the same). As in; there's even things that you might not have noticed in the anime (at least not unless its pointed out as it still happens).. but that are given space and more in the light novels. The manga is brilliant too... but the light novels.. :)

Exactly. One thing they cut out of the anime which I was very displeased with was: SPOILER ALERT! . . . . . . . . The very first reversi or “go” game Myne had with Ferdinand. It shows a petty side to Ferdie which is not shown in the anime. Which is kinda important to understand certain inclinations/motivations of his.

The exceptionalism of her magical abilities comes up a lot later in the novels, so the whole "not a predestined hero" moniker might have been prematurely awarded. That said I do love that her usual response to being pushed into more typical fantasy shit is "you just cut my reading time. Prepare to get wasted". Also the whole "he tried to kill you" - "meh that happens a lot" vs "he fucked with your library" - "time for a bloody carnival" thing she does is just hilarious. Spoilers She starts out at the bottom. As far as she knows, she has no magic power. Because she doesn’t even know that magic exists. She’s a sickly child and very depressed, which normally means reading a book for her but there aren’t any. She starts “inventing things” because being a modern woman, she wants to wash her hair, and keep it out of her face so she makes the things she would’ve just normally bought. In fact that’s a common theme that she just makes things because that’s the stuff we use. It’s half a season before she finds out that magic is a thing in the world. And another half a season before she finds out she has magic. And then another half a season before she finds out how to do anything with it other than make gems glow. What has pointed out we learn stuff as the characters learn it. Everyone in the show is missing information that they need to make good decisions. So it takes a long time to understand the world as it slowly unfolds.

No spoilers but as someone who is reading the LN i am so glad you touched on the darkness under the surface since a lot of things are glossed over in the anime but also... a lot aren't? Man, still can't find a good part 5 translations, be it MTL or webnovel, can't really find some. Anyone know where I can read a decently translated part 5?
When I first saw the name Main/Myne, I thought it might be some weird etymology, but... (From a Q&A in the first fanbook) Q: What was your inspiration for Urano Motosu's name? _Also, I see "Gunther" and "Effa" come up in lists of German names, but no "Myne." What was that based on?_ A: "Urano Motosu" is a Japanese pun that means "all books should belong to me." _For the English localization, I chose the name "Myne" from a list of possible romanizations the translator sent me. It comes from the English "mine," meaning "belonging to me," and the German "main," as in "main character."_ So, no. There is no complex trail of crumbs leading back to a fascinating origin. Myne was literally named for being the main character.

Based on your video. The setting of Ascendance of a Bookworm is more Germanisque that tells the different finite and infinite things (more like imagination) can be found in German history (? - year present older than, but don't think about Beer, WWII, and Autobahn), not just to change, but fit themselves extraordinary.
My absolute favorite series by far. The depth of world-building, forethought in plot development, and absolutely amazing characters make it so damn good.
This is one if not my favorite anime of all time. It's so incredibly wholesome. It's also very sad at points. I cried multiple times watching this show. I absolutely love it.

Bookworm is my favorite book series ever. I just can't think in any history that drive so deep into the main character hardships and strugles. In a similar way, the world building is breathtaking, the magic concepts, social rules, hierarchy and even fundamental scrutructures of society are so deeply explained that I just can see a world like this existing.
Season 01 is what got me into the Light Novels (LNs). Those of you who've seen the anime but not checked out the LNs, do yourselves a favor & do so. So much was left on the "cutting room floor" in the anime, that it's not even funny. The LNs give much deserved context to a LOT of things. Also do yourselves a favor regarding the anime, listen to it in Japanese with English subs, your ears will thank you.
This is the only LN I thought I could recommend my mom read. I did and she actually loved it and is reading it as it releases. She actually watched the Anime version because she liked it so much and enjoyed it even though she doesn't like animated shows. Because of it she went on to read some other random fantasy LN's but none of them were as good as this.
"It's so cozy. Makes you wanna curl up some fire.." Me, reading the Light Novel after the anime: Why am I hearing Game of Thrones theme song? 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve bought every single light novel and they can’t get translated fast enough I can tell you. This is worldbuilding done right imo. As mentioned in this video, we learn about the world AS Myne does at the same time. It’s intriguing and different and far better than any other isekai setting I’ve read or watched. Good stuff.
The best part about this series? It continually gets better and better. Easily one of the best isekais out there. Hell, it's one of the best fantasy series too!
Ascendance is my favourite light novel. Bar none. The show is pretty damn good and wholesome, while not skipping major parts, but it does skip some perspective chapters. (The investigation episodes between seasons 1&2 for example is one of those perspective chapters) There are a handful of those chapters per light novel, always post epilogue. The worldbuilding in this series only gets better as it goes. As you said, it only shows what we need to know as it goes. It's chapters before you learn much more about her neighbourhood, a few books before she understands much of the city, and even longer before she learns about duchies. And every new addition adds something fresh to the series. That said, the vibe takes a pretty drastic turn after the current anime episodes so I'm not confident in any further episodes. It's basically an isekai within an isekai.
Currently the anime covers what I would call, the prologue. What comes next is amazing. The same things that make Bookworm unique still exist but we also get all the hype from a more typical isekai, like a cherry on top! I will die on this hill, singing Bookworms praises. I hope they continue the anime adaptation but they are going to need more budget to do it justice.
I stumbled upon this series by a friend's recommendation for the anime, which was right around when the 3rd season was wrapping up. I was so enthralled by the show that all I could think of was, "I want more...". So I went looking to see if there was a LN and bought the entire series (that is so far out) on the spot; and I've been hooked ever since. At one point, during my obsessive reading, I was giving serious consideration to call into work sick so I could keep reading - It just reached a good part and I didn't want to stop... don't judge me! And that's when I had to draw some parallels: I was obsessively reading a book series about a bookworm, who obsessively reads books to the point of it being a detriment to her and those around her. So, yeah... I went into work that day. Stupid responsibilities.... But I can wholeheartedly recommend the anime and the LN to anyone - especially the LN. You have so much more to insight of the thought processes of the characters that the anime can't quite convey with it's limited timing to advance the story. And while I hope that the anime continues (I do believe a season 4 is being considered) for the entire duration of the book series, it will, very likely, take years to cover.
I love this show SO MUCH it's literally so interesting! It combines so many of the things I'm I like such as the historical feel and is even better bc it teaches you the most random stuff about life and ur just like 'huh that's useful'. Really makes me appreciate the world we live in! And I like how I can actually empathise and root for the characters
I loved watching this anime. I have read all the light novels with the next one already preordered. This is a long story, but it gets so much better as it goes.
I cannot wait to see the other books animated. It gets even better after Volume 3.
im glad someone was able to do this anime justice with a decent video. I did my best t attempt this, you killed it
Honestly after the second season I needed to know what happens next then bought all of the light novels, then subbed to jnovel to get a few chapters a week more and eventually read the web novel because the 20+ books side stories and fanbooks and manga and anime just werent enough anymore. If you do plan on buying the light novels just know it wont be finished in English translation for another few years at least and that is just the main story not the spin off extra and all the side stories. All in all it should be around 40-50 books and every page is worth it.
The anime got me to spend the last 2 months doing nothing but read the light novel, before that I hadn't even read a book in over 5 years. I'm very much looking forward to the next volume at the end of January
"Myne is incredibly charming" Literally every single character in the story: "She's WHAT?"

Ascendance of a Bookworm feels like eating a taco after a lifetime of burgers.
I love the light novel series. Its such a breathe of fresh air for a genre that has a (usually rightfully) terrible reputation.
The ascendance part of the title also refers to how, much like shounen protagonists, will somehow gain the power to kill god by the end. I believe in you Myne, you can do it. Have to say its an incredible way to go about the story. What with having the protagonist ascend through social classes as an excuse to constantly shuffle the environment to prevent things from getting stale.
Isekai is a powerful storytelling tool that’s often done wrong. It’s powerful because you can learn about the world together with the character using modern human logic and perspective, it eases a lot of info load for the reader/viewer in contrast to traditional fantasy. And the thing that flops isekais is the usage of power (knowledge, magic, blessing, or whatever form they’re.) Power fantasy isekais will use power as a means to trivialize every problem, while better isekais would use it as a means to create conflict, thus driving the story. Ascendance of a bookworm did the genre justice.
Great video! Happy to see more people checking out this series.
Ahhhhh I love watching videos of pre LN stuff! Here’s to a season 4
i really want season 4 get animated soon
I constantly find myself referring people to this series when they state that they didn't like Harry Potter, since in many ways, it's almost the antithesis to Harry Potter's entire basis for world building. One small thing it does constantly is have small reminders about things that were mentioned, like a Chekhov's gun that's perpetually sitting there, and people keep mentioning it. Nothing truly gets mentioned only to be irrelevant later on, and the story makes a point to bring up these old aspects in regards to how they change in context with new revelations about how the world works. It's also probably the only story I've ever seen that could be described as a 'double-Isekai, inverse tragedy'. And if that doesn't make sense, don't worry, that description doesn't cover anything that hasn't already happened in the Anime.
I'm just excited to see how much Myne will grow in the next season
I just finish this anime it was like you said wholesome and I also agree with liking the vibe of all the characters I want to see more of it I wish the next season will come soon.... I'm really glad that I encountered this anime❤❤
*Here's a summary of the build up over the course of the series so far in the Light Novels:* Part 1: Let's make paper so we can make books Part 2: Let's invent printing so we can make books faster Part 3: I'm adjusting to my new life as a noble, but at least I have access to reading material Part 4: I'm attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry so I can read in its library Season 3 of the anime is just at the end of Part 2. If you skip from Part 1 straight to Part 4, you may wonder how the hell is she able to use magic at Hogwarts now, but like the Never-ending story, you can't skip the parts you don't like because they're important later. The World-building is some of the best I've seen and it's a satisfying read.
You might be thrilled to learn that Studio WIT is picking up the show from the fourth season!
I love this show. I think it's funny when people underestimate her and she ends up making them look completely stupid. The LN is super far along from what I understand. So there is a lot of source material for a lot more seasons.
I remember reading the manga awhile ago, and it was one of the best isekai I had, at that point.. yes it is very very great
*Minor spoiler The "Ascendence" in the title is translated from "Gekokujo", which is a word from the Sengoku era for raising a commoner to noble status, usually in return for loyal military service.
I binged all 3 seasons a couple months ago and immediately wanted to buy the books, lol. I'm too impatient to wait for the anime (no announcement for a season 4 yet, but like you said, it's pretty popular). I haven't had much time to read but I bought the first 3 books and noticed quite a few differences from the anime from the getgo. It's definitely worth it to at least read the first 7 books (which I believe is what the anime covers) to see what's different! It's crazy to think there's still like 25 volumes worth of content not covered by the anime so far lmaooo
It is one of my favorite anime and best isekai in wholesome genre.
This, I'm a spider, overlord and shield hero are probably my favorites because most of them dont show up just op and well liked they struggle throughout and even when they get op and their standing improves, or in the case of over lord (realize that they are in fact a god tier menace to society) they still have to stuggle with something. Be it the problems that come from having to deal with other people or the fact that there are bigger bads who make their power look like a death battle between stabby the rumba and a literal tank. Like thank you for having character development and not just this being adventures of some guy and his fanservice squad.
I do hope the continue the anime, as someone that read the novels... then went online to find some poorly dubbed version of the rest of the novels.... I pray the anime continues cause I would buy both the novels and anime as he is right it's one of the extremely few isekia done right. TWELVE KINGDOMS is also another isekia done right. A much older novel series turned anime that has been dubbed as well about a girl that is dragged into another world by a man claiming to be her friend only to become lost in another country without any where to turn. She has people hunting her done as she tries to survive and fight her way through in hopes to find the guy that dragged her there to begin with only to find out the reason she was brought to that world and the choice that she has to make that would not only affect herself but the countries around her. She does find friends that do help her along in an organic way as well has finding people that take her trust and betray her. It's an incredibly thought out story and can also be watched on Crunchyroll

Prepub reader here, i can say Part 5 Volume 2 was pretty good this Bookworm Monday, the LN's the most complete source and make the anime pace feel like shit. I cannot wait for Part 4 to be animated but sadly, the quest for Jureve (Part 3) will need to be animated first with 2-3 seasons. I expect Part 4 might take like 5 seasons, lol.

It's spelled Myne actually xd or rather, マイン, which does transliterate to "Main", but the translator came to the conclusion that Myne would be a better spelling after asking the author. There are MANY theories as to what informed her name (Main as in the German river, Main as in main character, Mine/Mein as in declaring ownership over something in both English and German respectively, Mainz as in the city Gutenberg was from, etc), but Kazuki denied all of them
Loving the videos and editing 😮💨
Ascendance of a bookworm is the best book series I've read. A gem of anime and a reminder that isekai can only be 10/10 as a shoujo
yup this series is so good and a breath of fresh air. not a generic ass guy who just so wholesome get transported to another word and is automatically overpowered. who fix everything cause he can just bunch the bad guy into paste. we gets somene who is clueless about they world around her but is introducing thing that will have far-reaching effects. she end up between people who aren't to use and abuse her for their selfish gain and other who want to flat out torture and kill her. all the wile she just to understand thing around her but gets no time to rest. and all she wants to do is read in peace.
It will sadly probably take decades before the anime (if at all) gets halfway tho the 30+ books of this story. If i were to sell this story to people i would call it a fantasy with a slow but important start that becomes something akin to a Game Of Trons mixed with Harry Potter. And one of the best characters of the show aint even in the anime yet.
I will make this statement unironically: people poop is a plot point.
I LOVE this show. Session 1 got me in to the Light Novels and I NEVER read the LN. But as much as I loved S1, the animation on S2 (and to a lesser extent S3) just failed to deliver. One should still watch because the story is just that good, but I’ve never been happier that I moved on to the LR because that’s where it’s at.
I couldn't wait on the anime so I had to read the light novels. I really can't think of another story like it. Yes it has plenty of troupes like any story would. Its just Myne is a unique character in a number of ways. At least she is from a main character perspective. The anime does take a few liberties that actually make it more charming than the books. But overall it's very faithful to the light novels. I highly recommend it even though I'm sure some people wont like it. Mostly those who want nonstop action. For everyone else it is a decently paced story of a sickly girl that slowly improves her status in life while enriching the world around her with a number of things we would take for granted. There is a lot of slice of life while slowly learning about the world she is in. There is also drama, comedy and yes even action. Give it a try.
It's Underrated Gem you should definitely check out.

Oh, but I will get on your case for not reading the light novels yet! Seriously though, I am joining the chorus of people recommending the light novels for this series. Totally deserves more popularity
just finished re-watching and now starting the LN
That anime is wonderful, but at the same time he doesn't reach the ankles of the light novel. If you can, read the LN, a whole new world will open in front of yours eyes
This show is soo good it is actually in my top 3
For my Isekai animes I prefer the funny style ones (akin to Konosuba) or the wholesome ones (Bookworm). I have definitely seen others that are good/charming, like Overlord or some others that I have forgotten the name of right here and now. However Ascendance of a Bookworm is honestly one of the top tier ones for me. As an Isekai it tops it, but as an anime it is easily in the top three. Myne is such a charming character that has tremendous, plot given power, but experiences the flaws and drawbacks of such in a way to completely avoid her becoming a Mary Sue that becomes flawless and technically unstoppable. She needs to learn *everything* about her power and the only things she really came to that world with that give her an advantage is the knowledge that anyone with arts and crafts skills would be familiar with. Her personality and demeanor makes her likable and adorable. Precious even. Her raw talent and drive makes her fun to watch. You just love to see her succeed. You love to see her smile at the end of a feel-good episode (of which most are). She is my favorite Isekai protagonist, despite not really following the mold that most of them do. There is no leveling, there is no game mechanics, there is no "voice of the world" (though I WILL say Reincarnated as a Slime is one of my favorite, but it was toppeled by this one) that drives the plot. Just Myne. Just Myne and her new life. I adore her and love her as a character and I want to see more of her in the future. I hope we do.
This show hooked me, it one of the few ln I read weekly, that saying something.
This series is great, Started the books after the first season of the anime came out and now devour the books in either a day or two when ever they come out. I read this series, Saga of Tanya the evil, So I'm a spider, so what?, and Spice and wolf. If anyone has good recommendations I'm open to hearing them. Might give "86" a read at some point. Ascendance of a bookworm is probably one of the most real feeling worlds I have read in a while. Everyone has motivations and reasons for their actions and are often clever in their own rights so it doesn't just become "main character moves ALL plot points and solves ALL problems".

I mean, Mushoku Tensei is the obvious recommendation. While it isn't perfect and I don't agree with the all of the authors choices, it's pure solid 24k gold writing, especially volumes 12-18. I love the story because the author is extremely deliberate and intentional with everything they write. There are a lot of details that are easy to miss because they can be as simple as a single sentence and not draw too much attention or seem too significant on a glance.
As someone who found the anime, was a big fan , found the LNs got through all the available English translation and even got through the JP web novel using google translate (it was hell), i just wanna say that Part 1 and 2 (alias all seasons of the anime) are just a prolouge to the story of the girl now known as Rozemyne.
Her name is Myne because it's a play on words. Her original name is a pun meaning: "all the books are mine". So her name is Myne, based on "mine"
I love this show, this manga and the Light novel especially, i haven't gotten too far but far ahead of the recent anime. good example of this world challenges the ideas and have a conflict in belief to myne, is learning that Selling an orphan in a rural city to a noble isn't bad or illegal. in fact people prefer it that was. this is because the orphans are owned by the mayor who feeds them and does what they want. and being sold, gets you money that will help your rural city and less mouth to feed as well. for Myne who live in our world, human trafficking is illegal and bad but she is force to see that in this world her common. sense are not the same and her belief is being challenged that way.
After seeing your Nier vid I wanted to see if you could analyze things just as well so I click on this vid, I was initially gonna skip this anime but now I'm curious about it and want to watch it. You sir are good at explaining things, which is arguably rare to see most of the time. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next vid cause you make me thing just like Nier did.
Read the novels!!!!!! Anime is so good but the novel put more details and much better
The anime is good/okay. It could use better animation or more memorable music. The light novels are actually amazing though. They are like 300+ page novels with many volumes and lots of detail and depth. I've teared up a couple times. It's been my go-to as I wait for the next Mushoku Tensei translation to drop every 3 months.
このアニメは家族ぐるみで見られる。笑いがあり、涙をそそる場面も、広く海外へ浸透してほしいです。
New to the chanel here! Haven't seen this anime. But I'll give it a try because of this! 😁

It's a slow pace anime, but when it started showing important scenes, you will not regret it!💖
One thing i love about AoB is there's no pointless fanservice. The fashion reflects the culture of the world. In this case, very conservative to the point that young ladies are discourage to show ankles. So women wore clothes appropriate for the age.
True the most appealing part of the show is that they give charecters personalities and motivations. It's sad because their are so many shows that could be amazing if they just put some effort into their charecters. Like beast tamer, I like the show but everyone straight up is like "hi can I be your slave you seem nice". My best tip for finding good anime is does it have a male and female main side charecter? Things that are badly written hardly every will have mixed gender supporting cast.
Here's a fun fact: This was originally not planned as an isekai. The reason it became one is quite simple: It was pretty much the only way to justify the protagonist's book obsession, since a 5 year old girl from the poorest parts of the city would normally not even know what a book _is._ As for not wanting to read the novels while the show is airing: You might as well go for it now. Saying the anime has only scratched the surface yet would be the understatement of the year, and we don't even know if there will be a season 4 in the first place. To give you an idea: The story is split into five parts. The anime has so far adapted Part 1 and 2. Part 3 is almost as long as 1 and 2 combined. Part 4 is almost as long as Part 1-3 combined. And Part 5 _is_ as long as 1-3. The entire thing is 33 volumes long and the anime just got done with volume 7. Basically, it has only really gone as far as the prologue of the prologue and it's already up in the air if it'll even continue. It would be one hell of a mammoth task to adapt the whole thing. I would love to see it, but I doubt it will happen. The books are also extremely well written and the story just continues to get better with every volume so it's well worth the read.
The novels are even better, more detailed and show the perspectives of many characters not just Myne
I would reccomend reading the light novels, even if you like the vibe! I would call the Anime an abridged version of the light novels, and you can’t get the full picture of what’s happening without it! I’ve re-read the LN abt 3 times, the manga twice, and re-watched the anime like 4 times. And I /still/ finds stuff that I hadn’t noticed before !!!
I like the anime, but i gotta say the light novel is soooo much better. I can't recommend it enough
This bookworm loli, and papa bone overlord is the only good isekai anime in my shell. You got their world building, plot, politic, and their character. I''m not a LN reader, but evey once a month i marathon honzuki manga. I'm werdly addicted to the settings.
i'll get on your case , read the light novel !!!
4:05 forgot child slavery and the master is our beloved protagonist, and perfectly justified in the plot

lol. That's included in the +More part
The novel is a god tier list for isekai. I read it several times as I craving a similar one that as good as it.
I loved both the manga and the anime the only downside is that we need more episodes
I cant wait to see what Myne gets up to as Rosemary in season 4🤩🤩. I tend to get bored waiting for animes to be dubbed and ill watch the subs even if they're only 2 episodes ahead but after watching season 1 for season 2 and 3 I would watch other stuff and binge the dubbed season in one night. definitely the best anime I have watched, would recommend👍👍
Lol, I've started reading the novel after the second episode aired. The show is awesome, and it is able to develop the relationship between characters + dive into the world mechanics really well, but the novel have more time to explore these topics. I highly recommend NOT skipping to next the volume the anime covered and start from the beginning
I love you for this one 😍
