Bassey absolutely knocked this out of the park! There have been many great Bond theme songs but this is my favorite. There's something so sinister about it: the lyrics, the orchestration and, of course, Shirley Bassey's incomparable voice.

The original plan was to have her sing all the bond themes. I can't remember why they didn't .

Dame (as awarded by the Queen) Shirley Bassey is one of the greatest live performers who has ever lived. Her performances are legendary. She is adored by millions of fans like myself. It is a pity you did not see a video of her performing "Goldfinger" or "I, Who Have Nothing" or "Diamonds Are Forever" or the incredible "This Is My Life". If you did, you will sit there transfixed as you did for Pavarotti and for "Barcelona".

Gorgeous Shirley Bassey. What a voice. What a personality. She was a major singing star in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s and is still performing. From a humble background in South Wales she became a pop sensation with a very long career. Lovely lady.

Dame Shirley Bassey is a national treasure in Wales and the UK. She is what used to be called a belter and push out a note like no other often likened to the female Tom Jones and has definitely done a few Vegas shows as well. Her version of "I who have nothing" is a total show stopper and my favourite version. She is now 86 and last performed live at the end of last year (she definitely still has it). Her life story is amazing and she has fought through so many adversities. She is still a very beautiful and elegant lady.

Shirley justifiably hates the term belter as it denies the skill, control and variety of her voice. she can apply the power when needed but is capable of massive subtelty as well. she's the only artist to have been chosen to do three Bond Themes but you could listen to "This is My Life", She made "Something"( one of George Harrison's songs for the beatles ) her own, and her great vocals on Propellerheads' " All just a Little Bit of History Repeating" which I think you might really appreciate.

Decades ago they had to introduce microphones and amplifiers for the performers because many couldn't sing and be heard at the back of the theater! I know because my father was one of those with an old "Broadway Voice"! He was the best dramatic tenor on B'way from late 40's to late 70's and was in 30 shows(15 original casts) and could be heard easily and clearly in the last row of every show he was in.

Fun Fact. Composer John Barry wanted Shirley to hold the high note at the end of the song as long as possible. After a few takes, she still wasn't holding the note as long as they wanted. So Shirley took off her bra and draped it over the top of the vocal booth, so she could "take a bigger breath" for the high note. On the last take she fainted at the end of the track. Second fun fact. The guitar in this song was recorded by a young Jimmy Page (whom you all know as the guitarist of Led Zeppelin). Shirley is without doubt one of the world's greatest and most powerful ever singers and performers. This song is THE quintessential 'Bond song'. If you guys haven't seen the films. I think it's time you do!

I’m glad that you two found Dame Shirley Bassey. She is the only artist to have sung more than one James Bond, 007, theme song; Goldfinger, Moonraker, and Diamonds are Forever. It would be worthwhile finding a video where she sings live, her live performances add to the experience.

She was offered Goldeneye by Bono as well. When she turned it down, they approached Tina Turner as the next best option.

Fun Fact! If you listen closely, you'll hear an acoustic guitar mixed in with the orchestra. And who was playing that guitar? None other than Jimmy Page, soon to be the rock god and guitarist with Led Zeppelin! He was a major session guitar player in his early career. Another little tidbit (I learned all of this in the documentary about Abbey Road Studios that Paul McCartney's daughter directed recently) is that Shirley Bassey held that final note for so long while she was waiting for the credits to end (she was watching while recording) that she fainted as soon as she finished, standing right near Jimmy.

Any reason you never watched her doing a live performance, you really have to see her live to appreciate her whole performance of any of her songs.

She is Welsh. That's were she was born. It's her nationality. Her bi ethnic background has nothing to do where she was born and raised. That's like saying someone that's half Caucasian and half Korean but was born in Canada isn't Canadian. They are if they're born there.

In the seventies in Wales we always talked proudly of our shirl, and our tom. Shirl being Shirley Bassey, and Tom being Tom Jones. As for Divas Diana Ross Madonna Mariah Carey Pah! Shirley Bassey wrote the book on being a diva. Watch a live performance by her and you'll see what I mean.

She had a hit in 1997 with the Propellerheads. The song was "History Repeating." While the song was clever, it wouldn't have been anything without Shirley Bassey's incredible voice. A really fun song and video if you want to give it a listen.

Any song she sings, she grabs your attention from the first note, and holds it through the entire song. Truly one of a kind!

You really need to see her perform. She is a true performer and you just don’t get the full Shirley vibe without watching her. She was massive in the 1970s and munched loved in the UK.

Watching Shirley Bassey live is an experience. Hopefully you can do another few more songs by her but should be a video of a live performance. Yes, great voice. It's interesting to think that the James Bond film series is becoming less and less known. There was a time when I and my school friends had seen and could discuss all the Bond movies up to that time in great detail. Bond: "You expect me to talk?" Goldfinger: "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"

You guys NEED to do some James Bond Flicks! Killer action, Killer gadgets, and some awesome double entendre one liners! The definition of cool!

Shirley is Welsh like Tom Jones. She passed out on the last note recording this and Tom passed out singing the last note of the Bond theme for Thunderball!!!

Shirley is a national treasure here in the UK. Now i am going to recommend another, Cilla Black. I will keep things short with the details, she was born in Liverpool and worked as a cloakroom assistant at the cavern club (made famous by The Beatles) where she would get up and sing a song with whichever group were performing that night (inc The Beatles). She eventually got a record contract with her first song being written by The Beatles. She sadly passed away in 2015, the song i recommend to show the power of her voice is "You're my World".

"Gravitas" is the adjective I would use to describe Shirley Bassey's voice. It has a strong, theatrical sense of drama to it. It's almost melodramatic. It's perfect for the song.

She did a smashing jazz trip-hop record with a group called Propellerheads called "History Repeating" from 1997 with a cool video. She also did a great non-Bond theme called "The Liquidator" where she really shows off a lot of her vocal ability with mysterious slightly sinister jazz backing and those big horns.

Amber, you talk about her matching the note of the horn. I've been trying my best to get you guys to listen to _The Manhattan Transfer_ forever, because that's what they're known for. Their style is known as Vocalese and they can match the pitch and rhythm of instruments. They're an amazing jazz/R&B/Swing group that started out in their teens and twenties about fifty years ago, and though one member/the founder, Tim Hauser passed away, they added a new male singer and still perform. They use a lot of jazz/beatnik lingo from the past, and I've even offered to translate for you in email. You can look at the lyrics while listening, but you likely wouldn't understand them. Again, I suggest.... "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone" "The Offbeat of Avenues" "Birdland" "Killer Joe" "Ray's Rockhouse" "So You Say"

I'm pretty sure Jay's ears will perk up if you check out "Diamonds are forever" next, due to it being sampled for a very well known hip hop track. Absolutely iconic voice.

There have been 25 James Bond OO7 movies in total starting with "Dr No" in 1962 and the last (so far) being "No time to die) in 2021. "Gold Finger" was released 1964. My personal favorite Bond theme song has to be Paul McCartney's "Live and let die" from 1973!

If the “Midas touch” didn’t give it away, supervillain Goldfinger has a predilection for leaving his victims encased in gold. I love that some of the backing in this song feels very adjacent to the 007 theme that appears in most of the Bond films (including Goldeneye, the one the N64 game is based on). 😊

This woman has a magnificent voice. She can be subtle and also a total powerhouse when she wants to be. She is the ONLY singer to have done more than 1 James Bond main theme. She has done 3. There are currently 25 Bond movies.

Shirley sang Goldfinger at the Oscars a few years ago, celebrating 50 years of James Bond movies. Shirley was in her 80's and her voice was just the same. Incredible! The hole audience gave her a rousing, noisy, standing ovation! Check it out.
