I get the formula for reactions, but I sure wish this one had been an exception. I wish you two had known ahead of time that this song was a tribute to John Lennon after his murder. Most of us knew this ahead of hearing the song. I hope you go back and listen knowing this. Amber knew that she was missing some of the meaning and that was impressive. Honestly, I would love to see you react to it again knowing this. I think most of your fans would not mind the redundancy because the lyrics mean even more knowing the context. RIP John Lennon. Sir Elton John outdid himself with this tribute.

Elton remembered the moment he found out about John's murder. He was on a plane to Australia, and when they landed, an announcement said "Would the Elton John party please stay on board." Elton knew someone had died. He feared it was his grandmother. John Reid, Elton's manager at the time, went up to find out what was going on. He came back in tears, and told Elton that John Lennon had been murdered. Elton and the whole band were devastated. They had virtually all known Lennon personally, having worked with him and been friends in the mid-'70s. This song truly came from the heart, and it shows.

@@chrisoakley5830 It was a game between Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. Being a huge Miami fan I was staying up late to watch this because Miami needed to win this game to go to the playoffs and near the end of the game it looked like Miami was going to lose because New England was setting up for a winning field goal to win it. Just then Howard came on and announced the murder of John Lennon. It was devasting, then New England missed the field and the game went into overtime where Miami won it. It was a really bittersweet moment. I still remember that whole event like it happened last year.

The crop or grain is the talent and output from such a wonderful soul and was stolen from all of us!! Can you come out to play Johnny ... this is how Elton feels when he wants to call out to his friend (John Lennon) who doesn't answer because he is gone to Heaven! 😢 RIP John - you are Loved and Missed beyond words!! That's the gist of the whole song. 'it's funny how one insect, can damage, so much grain' Sir Elton was pointing a finger directly at Chapman, (his murderer), without naming him. And damage so much grain, he left all of us who loved his music damaged, because we would never know how much more music he had to write and perform.

After realizing that you don't know about this song, I agree that you need another listen. John used to take care the small garden outside The Dakota. He and Elton recorded "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" in 1974. John made a special appearance with Elton at Madison Square Garden, after saying that he would only perform the song if it hit #1, which it did. EJ said the roof blew off, when John came onstage (there's a clip out there) EJ never played this song, except in New York, until his residency in Las Vegas, a few years ago. There are two live performances, his 60th birthday, and Vegas, where he explains the reasons, and why he needed to share it, again. Please consider another reaction. Love you guys. ✌💙

I was 15 when John Lennon died, and it was the first time (and one of the few times ever) that I cried because of a celebrity death. He was at the top of his game as a solo artist, and was still a huge icon for peace and love. It was such a shame, and I still wonder what he might have accomplished if only…. This song by Elton, with the cry for Johnny, was kind of how we were all feeling.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard. I think everyone old enough at the time does. I was a teenager listening to rock music on the radio when they made the announcement. I ran downstairs to tell my parents (my mom was a big Beatles fan) and the news was breaking on the TV they were watching. 😢

I don't cry often, but everytime I watch that howard cosell announcement during the football game, my eyes well up -- even while writing this. What a devastating loss for absolutely no reason.

The next John Lennon song you should do is Whatever Gets You Through The Night. Lennon got Elton to sing backup on that song, and while they were recording it Elton bet Lennon that it would go to number 1 on the charts. Lennon, who had not had a number one solo song to that point and really wanted one, took the bet, which was if it went to number 1 Lennon would have to appear on stage at an Elton John concert. The song did go to number 1, and Lennon appeared at Madison Square garden later that year (1974). It was Lennon's last live performance in front of a crowd.

in the early 70's John and Elton got together and sang What ever gets you thru the nite, Elton john said to john if it hits number one you have to come on stage and sing it with me. John said he would. when the song hit number one, john kept his promise and that night went to the Ny madison square Garden Arena where Elton was playing and both got on stage and sang several songs. so when elton john says empty garden he expect john to come on stage at the Garden and play

This song, about Sir Elton's friend John Lennon, took on a new meaning for me five years ago when my life-long friend John passed suddenly. "And with every drop that falls, we hear, we hear your name." Such a beautiful tribute.

Elton's plea at the end "Can't you come out to play...in your empty garden? Johnny?" Over and over is still heartbreaking. Like a child calling out to a friend he can't accept is gone. His voice.....Even if you dont do a reaction again you owe it to yourselves to give it another listen with the new context. Every word...Wow Bernie Taupin. There is a nice live version were Elton explains the song. You could react to that. "After Lennon's death, John was concerned that a tribute song to the late Beatle would be "clumsy" - until he saw Taupin's lyrics." As a child of that era I recall neighborhood kids would do exactly that. Go around the neighborhood knocking on doors asking if a friend can come out and play when an adult answered. "No! Not until he has finished his homework" was a common reply. We always hoped the kid would be the one who answered and just come out to play. An adult encounter always interrupted the days flow on those hot summer days when you would go all day without seeing one. LOL Mom says "Where are you going?" The Kid replies loudly"OUT!" Mom says "Stay away from____and be in before the street lights come on" The KId shouts "OK" SLAM!

I don't know if you'll see this, but try to find Empty Garden/SNL. The first time he played this live was on Saturday Night Live in 1981. It was heartbreaking listening near the end, his voice was hitching and eyes getting watery. Mine were, too, as John Lennon then and now is my favorite musical artist all time. The video is hard to find, and not of great quality

Elton John and John Lennon were closest of friends, in fact rumors spread, they were "really close." They partied together for years, "Can't you come out to play'..." That said an amazingly beautiful song written by Bernie Taupin, as a tribute to John Lennon. Many of us were watching Monday night football, when the announcer, Howard Cosell, interrupted the game and announced the shooting death of John Lennon, a victim of a pre-meditated attack, by a deranged person. To those of us who grew up with the Beatles this was devastating, and still is one of the darkest moments to those of us who grew up loving rock & roll.

As you see the song is about John Lennon, Elton John covered Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, the back up singer was John Lennon. They were friends and it had to be so devastating when Lennon was killed. I think the reference of can you come out to play is a nod to the Beatles song Dear Prudence.
