the one that always had me wondering is the nightmare album because he did a pretty significant amount of singing in the demos for it. The album also seemed to flow like a soldier getting stuck in a nightmare coma wanting to be saved based on the demos. the plans for it were so insane prior to his death. his death was the thing that pushed the final version to be more of a tribute album rather than some crazy concept album. dude was straight up working on an absolute masterpiece and sadly got cut short.

i dont think people realise how much more insane this album would be if the rev were still alive today. he was MILES more insane and energetic than the rest of the members and his songwriting was way more deranged and out there than the rest of the members like with alpoh. this record with jimmy still alive to help write it might have actually caused peoples' minds to implode

Right!? And you can hear the references all over and understand, like “oh I see what you are doing here”, both in terms of lyrical and musical themes.
Several moments in this album made me laugh out loud, especially the moment about two minutes in on "Easier," where it comes out of that Pantera-esque verse and comes in hot with the "Yellow Ledbetter" ass guitar riff. However, I give AX7 full props on being a metal band in this day and age making something interesting, not boring. You'd never hear these on modern rock radio, and that's a complement.

I had to listen to the album/songs 5x minimum before I didn’t hate most of them. I had to listen to the album 20 times before it really, really clicked. I was stoned, with headphones on (necessary) and I just sat there, eyes closed and mouth agape as I finally HEARD what this album had to offer. The high level philosophical themes are fucking amazing. And the sheer depth of the music is mind blowing. I’ve heard the interviews and read the interviews and I knew Brian had made “soundscapes” on this album. But I didn’t truly hear them till last night. Everything under the main drums and guitar really plays on the emotion of the lyrics. You’ll be listening and realize you hear a soloing guitar like 7 levels down. If you step back from that solo, you just realize it’s part of the “soundscape” and that’s why you never even noticed it before. I think Brian moving away from “riffs” was the smartest thing ever. This is their most guitar driven (a statement I did not agree with at first) their most musical, daring, envelope pushing, cinematic, high art album they’ve ever made. This album is probably the best album I’ve heard in decades. An album that was an experience. It’s not just a bunch of riffs and drum fills. It’s like a goddamn symphony.

thank you Ryan, hard agree. And to the op, yes I agree that Fantano certainly is quite liberal with his shitting on things he doesn’t like, but yeah the vocals for this record just feel undercooked. Like it’s mixed poorly aswell. Just because there’s screaming and loudness in metal vocals does not obstain all vocalists from sounding like shit on a record. Yes it may be hard to believe, the A7X record is simply mid compared to any other metal I have at my disposal. Yes opinions exist, buts it’s no coincidence more people dislike it than like it. All borrowed components on this album have sounded better elsewhere, leaving no real reason to listen to it other than for fans to continue a fandom, so to speak.

I know there’s the whole meme people like to post in Fantano’s comment sections like “you would’ve given this a 10 if Swans made it” or whatever but I genuinely think that kind of applies here. Fantano has an obvious bias against this band if you look at things he’s said about them in the past and I think he went into it with a dismissive attitude. It may sound that I'm trying to advocate for him or something, but this kind of stuff seems to happen over and over and ppl seem to forget that it's just a single person's opinion lol. Oh and just as a context, a "Not Good" is not necessarily a zero whatsoever. It could be something between a 0 and a 4, and it's just a review of stuff he sees as kind of "non starters". Just a more casual and humorous kind of review, as there are the "Not Bad" reviews as well lol.
Only fans of Avenged Sevenfold or people who aren't familiar with avant-garde metal are praising this album, at least that's how it seems. In the grand scale of avant-garde metal it really is lackluster there is nothing epic or challenging or new about this album. I listened to it twice just to give it a fair shot but the only thing I kept thinking was damn I'd rather be listening to Mr. Bungle or Kayo Dot or even Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum. I'll also say that if this album brings more people to explore avant-garde bands than I think we can call it a win.
I kinda agree with that "its a dig at the label". I got the vibe from half the lyrical content that its almost like ticks and leeches from tool
As you said, this album doesn't sound like ususal Avenged Sevenfold but it's definitely a hit for me. I'm impressed by how their handled such variety in their sound
I love every song on LIBAD but hey I might be a little biased because they’ve been one of my favorites forever, I also went to the early reveal (360 experience in Vegas) along with the impromptu Area 15 show and the art gallery in LA so yeah lol I’ve just been surrounded by this album quite literally, and I think I respect them for wanting to do new things and not have the same thing they’ve been doing.

Of course you're being biased. You wouldn't fuckin care about this garbage if it was made for some unknown band. You like it because of the band's history and previous stuff.. but this album is total shit. And I'm not saying it because I'm a hater, since I like them a lot and have been supporting them since waking the fallen, but, damn, be honest to yourself.. no way someone would care for this album if it wasn't avenged sevenfold.

Avenged Sevenfold was my favorite all time band. After Nightmare, they started falling off. Really hard. As someone who loved the drum tracks and their old writing process, they can't possibly be the same band without The Rev. He wrote all their best songs. He was an incredible drummer, he didn't let any groove be simple after Waking the Fallen. It was against him, and the entire writing process of what Avenged Sevenfold committed to. They already perfected their sound. Finding a new one isn't the answer. Brooks sucks. We get classic rock beats with a couple huertas now. Until this point, they played it safe with their sound, playing radio rock. And now, they do a rip off Sleep Token flip. It just doesn't work. I was the biggest Avenged Sevenfold fan on the planet. They are a whimpy shadow of their former selves, and they should've called it quits 14 years ago while they were on top of the world.

@hellzturkey you lost all credibility after saying Brooks sucks, not to mention saying this is a Sleep Token rip-off Not only were they far more proginal in their sound on this album, they do far more different soundscapes that neatly tie together on the album, you are just objectively wrong here You don't gotta like the album, but the band never fell off

@@jcbiggs7658 Brooks sucks. As a genuine drummer myself that has spent his entire life warming up to Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold and Meshuggah tracks, yes. Brooks sucks lmao. Go back and listen to The Rev. Never fell off? The entire quality of their music fell off. They devolved harder than any band I can think of off the top of my head, Slipknot would've had a better time replacing Corey Taylor. A7X would've had an easier time replacing M Shadows then The Rev. He was literally the heart of the band. He wrote their best songs. He was the heartbeat, the unnecessarily complex, fun heartbeat of the band. And to say they didn't fall off, is to say you were oblivious to the entire change. Writing process became lazier. Instruments slowed down until they fell off, with the exception of a quarter of The Stage, and maybe two songs from the new album. Yes, they fell off. I'm sorry you don't feel that way as a super fan, but they fell off. I was once a bigger fan than you are. It's just too bad that they kinda suck now. Maybe they'll get Portnoy back one day and get off this gay avante-garde shit. It's not their sound. They already found their sound.

@@hellzturkey Yeah this whole comment right here just reads as straight bitterness to me. How cringe does it feel to be this much of an elitist? I like how you try to big dick your accomplishments with drumming as if that's supposed to be a point too, and with your complete surface level knowledge on Brook's as a drummer, yeah, i wouldn't be surprised if you were fool of shit either. There was a change to their music, yes, but that's literally how their entire discography has always been, since STST. They never fell off, they just changed to a style you didn't like, which is okay you don't have to like it but i can tell that's something you won't admit to. "Their writing became lazier" How? is there a metric to it? Does every song they write have to be what they did in CoE or Nightmare to be considered less lazy? "Instruments slowed down" The fuck does that even mean? So they slowed down the speed of their instruments, which means that they fell off? My guy, whatever you do, don't listen to Pink Floyd then either, you might think they fell off by the time Meddle came out lmao "I was once a bigger fan than you are" This doesn't mean anything lmao "Gay avant-garde shit" More elitism... You don't have to like their new sound, but saying its objectively bad and that they fell off is dumb
damnnnn I love mattel is properly the only song i like on the record
I understood most of it. It's not for everybody, but was definitely for people like me.
When “The Stage” came out, was when I really began to worry about the direction Avenged Sevenfold was going in and I knew “The Stage” was a lube up and preparation for what was to come next with them. So I knew this was the direction they were heading. “The Stage” was passable and had a couple of good songs. But I agree, this new album, I just can’t get in to, no matter how hard I try. But! With that said. I absolutely love “Cosmic” it’s actually one of the best songs they’ve ever released. It’s truly “A diamond in the rough” terrible pun, I know. But, it’s true!

He was talking about how all Dance Gavin Dance albums are mediocre or bad except Mothership and Artificial Selection. Those albums are good, but Downtown Battle Mountain and Happiness are their best albums besides Downtown Battle Mountain 2 which is their magnum opus. No DGD fan is going to pick a Tillian album over a Jonny Craig album.

Same. It's definately a 50/50 album. You either love it or hate it and both are understandable. I just wish people were less agressive about it in both sides. If you dislike it, then people who love it say you just "don't get it" and "should listen again". If you like it, then people who hate it say say it's just "the worst music ever", that that you must be stupid to like it and that there's no way people genuinely like it. That's why I hate the Metal community in general nowadays because if an album released by a band isn't their best sound ever or doesn't resonate with you, then it's just trash. I recently got trashed by someone because I liked Prog, but then I got trashed by a Prog fan because I liked Core and Hard Rock. Tbh, I feel that's kinda why Metal has been on the decline for the past years. Almost nobody really supports new sounds unless it's perfectly what a certain group is expecting.
