Idk though, its also so homogenous in a lot of ways. I loved some rap songs and i love earl, i love the alchemist, but this album was kinda mid to me. I think it has the same issues w a lot of mike's work where the energy brought to each song feels to similar

I described this album to a friend as a Grand Prix professional drifting without breaking a sweat, in every way that earls pen is masterfully written when you read into it and his delivery is always chilled just because it is much like a boldly James it becomes a signature sell to the calm venom. I’d say my only gripe with this though is alchemists contributions once you compare this to production from earl himself, Dj black power (Mike) or black noise the lack of weight to the beats makes Earl sound sleepy to someone who’s not already used to the way he writes on top of other styles of production. With that being said tho the album itself has some of earls best writing to date

That paragraph was so dumb. Haven't listened to Voir Dire enough yet to comment on that, but Earl has so many songs/albums about exactly how he himself is feeling in a given moment (Chum, Sunday, Knight, I Dont like Shit, Solace, SRS, etc) , the guy who typed that must not have listened to much cuz I don't get how you can listen to a song where he talks about how his father's death makes him feel and go "this guy is so disingenuous, he only WANTS us to think he's sad about it"

He just decided that this is what he wants to do, for himself and i love it, i never expect a bad song/project from Earl because he is first and foremost honest. Such an L take lol

Even though I always fucked with Earl the most, I meet a lot of people turned off by his music for similar reasons. But I see the same type of sentiment in other genres too. I see it as listeners being stuck on their preconceptions of a person like Earl and usually the listener is very unfamiliar with the vibe, the style, the cadence - and they tend to be very much a normie who rarely interacts with people who didn't live the straight life (going to university and getting an office job). Like personally my whole life I've been surrounded by weirdos, dropouts, burnouts, druggies, etc., so it wasn't hard to get it. At the same time, I think the way that art, especially popular art, is allowed to exist under capitalism is the marketing of a persona - and it often isn't even the artist themselves but the other people and groups in the industry that create and maintain personas for artists as a way of maximizing profit. It seems most of those industry people don't give it much thought either because it's a job where the work is so specific and quick that the big picture is basically hidden (aka the alienation of laborer from the labor through job specialization). I know I said a lot but last thing I'll say is that for the longest time I had this weird preconception of Earl's more recent stuff as some type of cryptic psychedelic ineffable shit when he made the SRS album, when really now that I got to know it, I see how it was him trying to be less filtered and organic. I figure it's also not just marketing but my own misconceptions based on common ideas fed to most of us our whole lives that makes us look at weird art and deem it otherworldly, frightening, weird, etc. - when it's usually just something personal to the artist and unfamiliar to the audience.

Something about Alchemist production recently has been just kinda alright recently. I think a lot of his production has felt a bit too polished and repetitive recently, but that might just be me? I'm typically a fan of dark, gritty, noisier production (for example, DJ Preservation on Aethiopes, Earl on Some Rap Songs, Danger Mouse on Cheat Codes, etc..) compared to the IMO overly loopy and almost generic/polished production that I feel like I'd hear on an "Alchemist type beat" KZread video... Maybe I'm trippin idk.

Earl is Daniel's unsaid student(mf doom) he legit went thru wahat basically mf doom did... and changed his WHOLE ARTISTIC DIRECTION AS A ARTIST not appealing to those hed not reaching to and being more so himself...a stand out... a journey man...someone who seeks to tell his truths with no reason to sugarcoat or put it to display first without the antics or bullshit.. its easy to appease someone with smooth expected shut of them... with earl its almost like he doesnt want chu to settle... hell let you know what hes feeling in that moment for how he wanna come at chu and how YOU SHOULD HEAR HIM not based on what you want to hesr from him..

I don't get it. His rapping is so lazy it makes Drake sound like Onyx. He sounds like he intentionally wants to sound half asleep or on a bunch of downers. If that's his real self and he won't give you anything else then it's safe to say he's never had a job in his life because nobody would hire someone this lacking in energy. Someone cut out his thyroid while he was sleeping. And everyone loves it. Not saying he can't write but what is it about his delivery that is appealing? Can't wait to pop in the new Earl so I can get to sleep... I like it about as much as Baby Keem's delivery. Bottom of the barrel. I wouldn't even give it a Mid. Even Melon said it's malaise. Since when is malaise a good thing for rap? It's the worst thing for rap to me. I can't even make it through a whole song.

I swear NFTs were supposed to be available to the sole person/persons that bought them. I’m not accusing Earl or Alchemist of anything shady, but if those NFTs are what I understood them to be then those that bought them have kind of been shafted because they may have only bought it for it’s limited availability. Now it’s everywhere. I’m not complaining that it’s out on streaming platforms. I’m just genuinely confused about the whole NFT thing even more than before.
