I saw them in 1974 at Newcastle Odeon (UK) when they supported Jethro Tull. I had seen them on TV but no-one had any idea they were the support band as it had not been publicised anywhere. I've always thought it was a deliberate move as female bands were very rare. They came on to an unlit stage wearing black hooded cloaks playing some good strong licks then the cloaks were ripped off as the lights flashed on and 'boom' they had everyone's attention. I remember the power went down early in the set and the drummer (Alice de Buhr?) carried on with an impromptu 20-30min solo while roadies with torches ferreted around in the dark. It was a memorable night for a 17yr old.

Lived in Newcastle at the time. It was definitely publicised, if you looked in the right places. That was Fanny vers. 2.0, so not Alice on drums. June Millington had also left by then, with Patti Quatro taking over guitar.

Just FANNY please, skip 1.0, 2.0...Once again, we don't categorize the Rolling Stones, or Kiss...etc. That was Cammy Davis on drums at that show, she replaced me (Brie) after I left the band after touring the states in support of Rock and Roll Survivors

I got to open for them in Madison, Wisconsin exactly 50 years ago. They were great and so much better than my boy band. That was the only time I ever felt like a groupie.

Cool! In 79 I lived in Madtown...saw the Kinks and the Cars at Dane county colosseum (separately) ended coming back 3 years later for college..good times!

I thought you all sounded amazing, but your wardrobe was a little out of style... until I realized it was a rehearsal film from '70 or '71. I couldn't believe that sound was coming from a band I'd never heard of. No disrespect intended... I was born in '67... but its pretty clear that you ladies never got the credit you deserved. I'm glad that some of the great female bands that followed recognize the doors you helped open for them. With any luck the documentary will open some new eyes as to how great Fanny was. I didn't see Nickey in the clip, so hopefully she's doing well and was able to participate in some way. I hope the film does well for all of you. Take care. :-)

The next notable band who did the same was The Runaways--who were also pretty revolutionary. I say this as a naysaying music snob who taught history of rock at the college level for 12 years, so I'm giving them huge props.

I guess that we all know Chi Coltrane? She rocked big time too. But my guess is that back in the 70’s girls just weren’t concidered as being able to rock. Fanny rocked, The Runaways rocked, Chi, Tina and Suzy dit too but there was always the thought that they were only around for their good looks. But man, did they rock.

I am as big a music geek as it gets I was a teenager in the seventies. How in the hell did I miss these gals? Thanks for KZread making it possible for me to discover them

I was fortunate enough to see them in the early seventies. One of the best all female bands ever.

Never heard of them until today. Unbelievable. Life is not fair. They rock!

'Bout damn time! I've been playing Fanny on my radio show at KNCE-FM in Taos, New Mexico since I got back on the air in '18.

If you heard nothing but the records you’d say they were really good band. But if you listen to the live recordings that’s where the magic is. They were phenomenal

I literally just heard them for the first time 5 mins ago.. their cover of hey bulldog (1971) and the first thing I thought was waaaaay ahead of their time.

Back in the 1970s, bands succeeded or failed based upon musical talent. Today, success is all about race and gender. The revived fortunes of “Fanny” are testament to that. 🤷‍♂️

I saw them perform live on the Boston Common in 1970. They were phenomenal. I immediately went and got their album after that. I still have the album.

Thanks to Fanny bands like the Runaways and my new favorite band Band Maid are alive and rocking serious butt today. They truly showed that the girls could rock the boys.

I first heard them around 1972, when I was 8. An ex-boyfriend of my sister left a (badly scratched) copy of 'Fanny Hill'. Their cover of the Beatles' Hey Bulldog was my first experience of that song and it was exhilarating! Even better was 'Blind Alley', a brilliant track and the one that really stays with me to this day. Going to seek out that documentary now...

I am 54 and I found one of your albums in my Uncle's collection when I was 16 and I was knocked to the ground like I was hit by an atomic bomb. NO ONE I talked to even believed you existed until I played them your music! All my punk rock friends were laughing at me until I forced them to listen and to the letter they all became FannyFanatics! You need to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and you should be inducted by The Go Go's.

Is there a recording available?

Bought my first Fanny album, Mother's Pride in 1972. On first listen, declared they are a female Beatles band. Bought Fanny Hill shortly after and was not surprised it was recorded at Abbey Road studios (studio No. 2 no doubt).

One of the pioneering all-female rock bands along with Birtha and Isis. I still have all my Fanny albums and Isis' 'Ain't No Backin' up Now' on 8-track.

Long overdue recognition.

Still amazed how many people never heard of them, but when I play their music, it sounds "So Familiar" they question if they have heard it before,....

Well, 50 years on guys like me are sitting behind my computer watching Fanny kick ass in old clips. And you got the recognition from all these great artists. You guys deserve to be in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. They way Fanny did Hey Bulldog? Shite, that was good. I'm a huge fan of The Beatles, but I'm not sure which version I like best. Makes me sad to think about how much talent we never saw just because girls weren't supposed to.

As far as the GoGos getting all the attention, the GoGos played radio friendly Pop songs. Fanny played some serious rock and roll. Fanny would have blown the GoGos off the stage. If anyone hasn't, check out that live Beat Club video. It's raw and it's real. So much more powerful than their records.

Gary Jackson Fanny was selling musicianship, while The Runaways were selling sex appeal (Cherie Currie onstage in a negligee) over musicianship (they WERE competent musicians, just not as highly skilled types of which Fanny were in my opinion,) and the GoGos were selling pop hits and looks (even though they were terrors on the road which their “cuteness” hid.) Fanny simply did not create an image to sell (and they should not have had to.) Unfortunately in the music industry image can trump talent.

Wow! KZread algo led me to discover a great if not the most epic women that rocked mens socks at their time or even to this day. Man I truly am grateful for what they stood for. They really deserve more recognition/attention for what they did. Long live fanny..hehe.A new fan here.

They opened for Chicago the time I got to see them. They had a great song playing on the radio and Chicago was already well known. A concert I had to see. They did not disappoint!

They may be the best rock band (female or otherwise) to “slip through the cracks” and be almost completely unheard of outside of their cult-like following. Fanny kicked some serious ass! Plain & simple...

These ladies were/are fantastic!!! What a great way to become "old". They're like a good wine, becoming even better with age. I first heard Fanny in the days of my puberty - some fifty years ago - on German TV. I immediately fell in love with their beauty AND their music. A bunch of VERY attractive girls were playing MY (generation's) MUSIC!!!! Before Fanny, females were only known as singers, but suddenly these "chicks" appeared to show the world that ROCK wasn't/isn't a matter of gender.... or age! It's a shame it took the band fifty years to gain the reputation they deserved long time ago. I just imagine a small kid proudly showing his/her mates some of these KZread videos shouting:" THIS IS MY GRANDMA!!! SHE'S PLAYING BASS/DRUMS/GUITAR/KEYBOARDS ON THAT GERMAN TV-BROADCAST!!!!! C'mon Fanny do it again, even if it's just for us old sacks! Show today's kiddos that ROCK has neither age nor gender. AND... thank you for the contribution Fanny made to the history of ROCK. The first time I heard Fanny’s music which wasn’t too long ago on YT I was like WTF it’s a sin that I’ve never heard of them before!!! I’m glad that they are getting their due!

If they would had did a cover of Kashmir or some really long nasty guitar solos you could see June had the gift in her, and some outlandish clothing, showing there great singing and musical talents was not enought. Don't know, but thanks to you tube I love them.

About bloody time! These ladies are rock royalty.

I recently saw the documentary. It was so well done and you really got to connect with the members of Fanny while watching. This is a story that needs to be shared and told to as many people as possible.

I became a fan about 6 years ago. Just listening to them, and thinking about them, is bittersweet.

I was right in the thick of my early teenage years and I'm SHOCKED that I never heard of them back then. Although I was more into Soul, R&B, and the rising genre of "Funk Music" at the time. But, i also loved what we call "Classic Rock" today, yet never heard of them until now. I had 100's of 45 records in my collection, and still do, so I was heavily into music, yet I never heard of them back then. Glad I found them now though.

As a kid in NC I owned several of their records because they were a DAMN good band. I wish I still had the albums. The ladies in this band were great musicians and once again are great musicians.

I am only a few years younger than them, and a musician forever, and never heard of them. I am embarrassed to admit it. But they were great, and it is fabulous to see them back at it.

Still scratching my gray head. Yes, they were before MTV and VH1. But I listened to the radio, watched TV and went to concerts. And never knew nothing about these fabulous girls.

Fantastic! They need to be inducted into the Hall of Fame too!

@Lennie Minder "Really good" is subjective when referring to the Hall of Shame. Deep Purple and Steppenwolf were really good yet neither band is in. Fanny were and still are "really good" and are as deserving as much,if not more so, than many that are in the Hall of Shame.

@@t.sewell1513 Liked for the good conversation, but of course, I disagree. We know that politics and money is involved with the RRHofF. Consider all of the artists both male and female who have never performed rock and roll but who have been inducted. It is actually a popular music hall of fame based on record sales etc. And even then popularity is not enough. Consider the number of artists who had to wait years to be inducted or who still haven't even been nominated. The Beat Club clip, along with some of the clips of their live performances illustrate how good they were. They should have gotten in before Joan Jett and they should have been nominated before the Go Go's. Consider the era they came up in. Consider how they might have fared with MTV to assist in promoting them. I think that the RRHoF is anti-rock and roll, but as long as there is one, Fanny should be in it.

That is some crazy killer tone, especially for the early 70s on the song 'Young and Dumb'. June's solo, like dayyyum, what amp and effects does she use?

In the Navy in '72 bought Fanny Hill... We sailors fell in love with this all girl band who could rock your socks off ! HOF material for sure !

Fanny opened the door for Ronstadt, Heart, Go-Go's and COUNTLESS others. Great musicians across the board. ROCK ON, LADIES!

I was a senior in HS when they released Charity Ball and went out and bought the album. They definitely were ahead of their time and could rock the house. But, that was the way of the world back then, male dominated rock bands.

Just discovered them...Now I'm a huge fan...sadly...50+ yrs too late..

Being one of the people who heard them on TV way back in Beat Club I was surprised to find myself living close to where Jean and June lived part of their lives. Missed a live performance here in Hilo (HI) in about1987 because of work.

Saw them at Bradford Uni Yorkshire when they just released Charity Ball, marvellous

@@alicedebuhr6457 Thank you for the message Alice - we are all getting to be old buggers now but I will never forget that Saturday night in Bradford here in the UK, first thing Monday morning I went straight to the record shop and ordered a copy of the album, terrific days, I got married in '75 had 2 wonderful girls but unfortunately lost my wife 6 years ago, reading this Fanny post brought back all the good times and a tear to my eye - thanks for the memories.Richard.

I stumbled across a live set they did for some TV show, which is on KZread somewhere. I’d never heard of them, and a minute into the first song, I couldn’t believe I’d never heard of them. I immediately wanted to know all about this great band that had somehow skipped past my radar.

I saw Fanny opening for Bonnie and Delaney in early 70's , don't really remember Bonnie and Delaney that much but I remember Fanny, I went and saw them again, they just rocked and rolled

Saw them opening for Delaney and Bonnie? That would be my dream concert.

I saw them for the first time on TV about 30 years ago and I was very impressed. I'm happy to see that these four girls are back. Rocking girls forever.

I had the pleasure of seeing these talented girls live at the Eastown Theater in Detroit opening up for The Stooges. They tore up the place. Along with the Quatro sisters, they were true pioneers of female rock.

They deserve much recognition excellent band

I first heard Fanny on a Warner Bros loss leader album in 1971. The song was Hey Bulldog! Started buying their albums after that! I hope they get the recognition they deserve!

It's a Beatles cover but it might as well have been their own song they way they play it.

YET another reason WHY KZread is so influential and meaningful in it's conception and existence. Here is another band that couldn't have been MORE important to the development and future of Rock & Roll and it's history, living in relative obscurity UNTIL KZread was created to reveal this band and others and their contributions in the shaping of what is todays musical frontier...

I had heard of Fanny when they first came out. I recall they played locally, must have been many times, because that is where I remember hearing their name announced on the local AM radio. I regret not being more interested in seeing them at that time. I never did see many bands at that time, not enough $$$, even though tix were so “cheap” back then.

I sent Fanny details (Wikipedia and this video) to a very multi instrument talented young lady with a fantastic voice. Her name is Patty Pershayla and she does solo work, has a blues rock band called Patty Pershayla and The Mayhaps, and is the vocalist for what was once solely a Rush tribute band but now have three CD’s under their belt. They are YYNOT. She broke through with a ukulele cover of Rush’s “Closer to the Heart” on KZread a few years back. Novel and left the Rush fan base gobsmacked.. Hence I saw some commonality with the ukulele. Also the fact that she has always wanted to assemble an all female group

There is some footage of them playing on Dutch TV it’s just electrifying. So damned committed!

@@marthajbaldwin5897 - I think they just rocked, perhaps at a time when women weren't meant to rock, musically, or something like that.

No gimmicks or trickery, just straight up rock n roll.

So so excited to see this and hoping one day to see them live! I think it’s their time to be the stars they should have been a long time ago.

If you've ever seen Fanny play live, the Beat Club video being a great example, you know that their producers were never able to capture that same magic in the studio. And that's a shame because they could really play.

The Beat Club videos are great!!!! They really bash out some solid, rich rock. Great example of that rich, early 70s rock sound.

That Beat Club live video take is a precious gem. That's how I discovered Fanny's live music. It could be a live mini-album.

They needed to do the Frampton thing. Should have done a live album if that's where they were at their best. Unfortunately I'm sure it wasn't up to the band to decide.

@@yepper1165 Wasn't their choice. The producer was responsible for not getting their live sound on the tracks. He even puts horns in one of the songs. The drummer commented on how adding 'horns' had nothing to do with their sound. Another example how people with all the power can effect people's art.

@@rollotomasi1873 That's really too bad! I know that's been the case with a lot of artists and groups. CCR and Steve Marriott come quickly to mind. Scumbag managers and trusting artists are a bad mix.

OMG, just saw the documentary and it was fabulous! How did I survive 67 yrs without knowing anything about these rockin women?

I just recently saw their cover of the Beatles “Hey Bulldog”. I was absolutely gobsmacked. What Stars!
