Good to see you again, sir. Personally I hate playing in drop tunings, but I can't deny there are some great riffs. A few of my favorites: The Ferrymen - The Darkest Hour (Drop C) Edguy - Do Me Like a Caveman (Drop C) Kamelot - Ravenlight (Drop C#) Hope you enjoy them!

Real world- All american rejects drop C for haunting intro drop D for rest

I just recieved a custom Kiesel 7-string multiscale Vader VM7 and used StringJoy's tension calculator to make my set. I'm tuned to a full step down from standard tuning so (starting from the 7th string) ADGCFAD. My string sizes (starting from the 1st string) are: .0115p .015p .019p .028w .038w .050w .068w My string tensions (starting from the 1st string) are: 18.7lbs 18.2lbs 18.8lbs 19.5lbs 19.6lbs 19.1lbs 19.3lbs With an overall tension of 133.2lbs. This closely resembles the total 132.1lbs tension of a 25.5" scale length 7th string guitar tuned to standard tuning. And I absolutely love it! It feels so perfect. Every string feels more or less just like the next string other than the width obviously. It's hands down the best string feel I've ever experienced on any guitar I've ever played. Huge props to StringJoy for making this calculator I use it all the time for my other guitar as well as for my friends' guitars. Also you guys have some pretty killer strings to boot ;) Thank you StringJoy!

Hey, Scott! You helped me set up the perfect tension set for drop B on my Kiesel Vader Multiscale 6 string a few months back, and it is still very much appreciated! For a couple drop C songs, try either Fixation On The Darkness or Rose Of Sharyn by Killswitch Engage. They're not super technical, and are very groovy and approachable to learn. There's also some great tabs out there for them as well, so that makes the learning process all the more easy. Keep up the great work with your strings, and keep the videos coming!

Man i want that guitar. May favorite color and a maple fretboard. Love it.

Something that may be more popular than you realize is to drop the lowest string down even further in pitch to emulate a 7-string guitar, i.e. AGCFAD. Periphery does this a lot, a good example is the song Remain Indoors. For me, this type of tuning would make a good use of a multi-scale guitar, since you need a ton of extra tension on the lowest string.

Totally! Yeah we have a lot of folks hit us up about strings for these types of tunings. Had a guy just this morning that was wanting to do F# on the 5th string, and then F# an octave down on the 6th. We went with a .046 on the 5th and an .080 on the 6th. Pretty wild stuff.

Power chords are equally easy in a drop tuning on multiscale guitars lol. But yes it’s all about the tension so you can get tone. I’ve found I like my strings as thin as I can keep them while tuned down. Longer scale lengths lend well to that and conversely I want to be able to bend my high strings so keeping a short length on them keeps the strings bendy.

I own a Schecter C7 elite multiscale and only Stringjoys go on it. I prefer the 11-70 and I up the lowers 46, 56.. to have that options you guys provide is spectacular. 👍🤘

this helped me to set the perfect guitar

A 25 1/2 inch scale in drop c The perfect string gauge would be 10 to 52. You can actually hear when the strings are too heavy for that tuning you don’t get that buttery chunky sound and the second string always seems out of tune with the first even if you keep tuning. I would actually use a 58 and drop G I my multi scale seven string Ormsby. Which is just about perfect. Also Jason Richardson a seven string player with a 25 1/2 inch scale Ernie Ball music man uses a 11 to 58 for drop G as well. With the multi scale you can go way lighter but somehow people get away with it. Ps my multiscale is lime green too!!!

The reason for the inclination of the frets is quite understandable, since the multiscale construction has a reference point of the 12th fret, which is perpendicular, and the length of the remaining strings is already built from it. The tuning is based on a harmonic above the 12th fret, and further from it the scale of the remaining strings is built in a triangle. This is a more natural and more natural formation according to the laws of nature and physics, and therefore it gives a more accurate tuning. The final tuning of the fidelity of the system should be carried out both at the bridge and at the nut. So we can compensate for both reasons for the deviation of the guitar tuning from the mathematical constructions of the scale. In general, the new modern type of guitars for tuning in the E standard should be a slightly smaller scale for 1 high string, then we will get a linear system without any corrections, and from this length we can build a fret marking system based on the patterns described above. It should also be noted that it is possible to build an arrangement of frets not only from the 12th fret, but also from the 7th, then we take as a basis not the second, but the third harmonic.

In Soviet Russia, you do not play multiscale. Multiscale play you.

Thinking about getting a fanned fret, my standard seven cant handle the drop tunings, drop e, drop f, and I'm not hollowing out the tuner or playing around with the nut. Would a fanned fret be better suited to this? Obviously with the correct set of strings? I don't want to put an 8 string set of strings on a seven and use a .90 for the low. I've done it before and it was absolutely awful.

I have stringjoy strings on my Goliath, and they're great! You can use the calculator on the website to get it all balanced the way you want for each separate scale length.

As a guitar and amp builder with 30 years of experience.. YOU SAID THAT ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY!!! Which is why I don't understand why string manufacturers don't make strings for straight fret guitars based on tension in drop tuning or standard.. Yes you have heavy bottom light top but it's not common and they still got a ton of the regular standard strings.. where is most experienced and popular musicians create their own tension with different strings... I do notice a difference but not a hell of a lot of difference when you drop down to Eb, or D AS THE BIG STRINGS FLOP..

How much do you charge for your guitars and amps?

When you bend on higher strings on the higher frets, I would think it would take some adjusting to hit the next note wether it’s a half step up or full step up with the frets slanted. When we always bent straight up, now you’re going to have to bend at an awkward angle. Anybody have any feedback on that?

I wanna know what’s good for Drop F#

i'm still waiting for you guys to offer Drop-A compatible strings on your acoustic line. hook me up with some 80-18's in warm bronze. and though i wont hold my breath on this one...is there any way to get some of the plain strings wound below an 18, or does the core wire just become dental floss at that point and make it super fragile. i'm only asking because i'm a bass player to the core and all my guitars are tuned super low and often baritone scales and i just hate plain strings, from the feel to the harsh sound. thinking of a way i could eliminate that one pesky plain string i end up with on my instruments. its especially bad on a 7-string bass when you have a 34 inch scale and one damn 16 gauge plain string throwing off the feel. my drop C-bass would look and feel nicer with a wound high g but you guys make the skinniest wounds ive ever seen and its still too heavy. 26 pounds of tension on a plain string is already quite stiff for solo bending as it is.

We'll get there on the acoustic side! As for the wounds, correct when you go lover than .018 the core wire is to thin that breakage is rampant.

i play a schecter C7 elite and want o upgrade to a Schecter Reaper-7 Multiscale 7MS. i use Ernie ball power slinkies, the dark purple pack. i tune to ADGCFAD. i would still use the same set of ernie ball power slinkies which are 58-1. i may want to go to drop G or G standard and with the multi scale id be able to do so with much more stability....am i follow the concept correctly??

Yes, however the set you're using won't perform well in drop G since it's designed for standard tuning. You'll need a heavier gauge on the 7th.

I got a Jericho elite. I just noticed the fret board is kinda curved. The frets are straight though. What’s a curved fret board called?

Short radius vs long radius. Short radius means there is more of a pronounced circular shape across the board.

The trademark is hard to protect because it's descriptive of the product, so any product similar would be likely to be referred to as that thing.

I’ve played drop B flat (A#) in grindcore and powerviolence bands since 1998. My setup has always been a Standard Jackson Dinky 6 String guitar, with and without a Floyd Rose bridge but always a springed tremolo. I’ve always used 9-42 strings with an EMG 85 my as bridge pickup. Not recommended for heavy fingers or low down straps. Cheers!

For drop C, Killswitch Engage riffs are always fun and not too hard. For something a bit more challenging Misery Signals is great if you can find an accurate tabs. (A Certain Death is one of their easier songs and real fun)

If only they made a V guitar in a multiscale with a Floyd Rose, then we’d be set.

Good talk, I learned a lot, but the piano shape is a bit different than guitar stringing, as the strings are not strung parallel, like the guitar. The grand piano, I suspect, is shaped like it is to get the longest angled string possible for the very low bass, including the required frame extension on the far end for the stringing tension, which is MASSIVE, many tons, in total for an A440 tuning. I think this is true especially in an extended bass range piano like the Boesendorfer. If I am not getting this exactly right, and you know more, feel free to elaborate. But yeah, basically what you said, to a certain degree.

The angle isn't all that germane, but the scale length that it enables definitely makes a huge difference. Thicker strings need a longer scale length in order to behave like proper strings.

As a death metal player, I'll have to respectfully disagree about not needing to consider different gauges for each string. Considering faster tremelo picking is the order of the day on at least all the wound strings, tension is absolutely a very high consideration. So, there's no way that a set that feels one way on a standard fret guitar with a 25.5" scale will feel anywhere near the same on a guitar that starts at 25.5" and increases in roughly 1/4" increments up to 27" (for a 7 string).

What I'm saying in the video is that the longer scale *helps* with exactly what you are talking about. So if a set of strings functions OK for these purposes on a standard scale, the multi-scale approach will only help those same strings work better. Like I say though, this also assumes you are starting with a balanced set to begin with.

It should be a rule if you appear in a video with a guitar in your lap, you have to play it. Great to hear all this info but fuck me, just go for it!

There are two reasons for using a multiscale guitar besides the downtuning that are important. 1) Multiscale guitars are easier and more comfortable when it comes to playability. So they are better for beginners than standard guitars. When you are a beginner you will need to practise a lot. Especially then it is very important that you have a guitar that is easy playable. Besides of looking cool this alone makes multiscale guitars perfect for beginners. 2) When you are a professional musician in a band you will need a guitar that is comfortable to play. If you want to prevent RSI-Syndrom you should consider choosing a multiscale guitar because they can provide immense help.

so in other words you use the same set of strings you would on a normal guitar to add more stability to them...

Just a piece of advice for your next video is that when people are tuning in to see the guitar itself and to have it explained, you shouldn't have the camera 95% on your face. I mean your beard is cool and all but I would rather be looking at the guitar as you are explaining ---the guitar. Thanks

Lacking any musical theory. A multi scale is supposed to solve harmonic problems of strait fret guitars. You didn’t even attempt to play the instrument, either. Why talk about an instrument that you’ve no experience playing, and, can only talk about it because you bought it? At least log some days on the guitar and familiarize yourself with it before you make a vid AND demonstrate what you mean by playing it. That would make it more interesting. I am sure you’re great at playing but this vid is bad.
