Excellent review Mr Callsign! Well explained and very informative. It's touch and go for me which I will end up going for. Having tried the DD2 and the CSL DD 8NM I could for sure feel a difference in detail and the smoothness of the wheel forces in the DD2. The price difference really does put the CSL DD right up there in my considerations.

Spot on! Exactly how I, and my DD1 owning friend, feel about the CSL DD to DD1 comparison. I own the Forza CSW v2.5 bundle, and "first wave" purchased the CSL DD, and new Formula v2.5 wheel. I also purchased a set of the new CSL pedals(waiting for LC). If my V3 pedals need service, I have a backup. And if my CSL DD needs service, I have the CSW as a backup. Keep the great reviews coming, random.

@@AntonRacing I am really enjoying the CSL DD. It is not so much the force feedback, it is the centering effect that the direct drive brings ... if the rear of the car steps out, the wheel begins to correct by itself. Amazing! My previous Fanatec wheel (the CSR belt drive) is an amazing wheelbase and the feeling through the force feedback has always been excellent ... I like a softer FFB, so I run the CSL DD at 50 - 60% in game (I bought the 8NM). Looking back, I would not buy it for the FFB per se; but the feeling of what the car is doing is so well-defined, which allows me to be more consistent. I need this as I am an old dog ... I bought my first Logitech wheel in 1999 in the days before FFB existed :) . In short, I think the CSL DD is outstanding and it will most probably be the last wheel I will buy; but I will be hanging on to my CSR for the time-being as it is so robust.

@@AntonRacing hey bud, I have the csl dd. I used to own a g29 sold it 4 years ago. I've only tried ACC, which I didnt try on the g29. Erm I was under welmed by the lack of power. I've ordered the boost kit and would advise anyone thinking to upgrade to do the same. Sounds like I regret my purchase, not even slightly as the details are fantastic, theres a little notching, but over all the feel is sublime. I think with the 8nm itll elevate everything. Just using fanalabs settings atm, so it might be that but FFB is set to 100.

for me the biggest factor that pushed me to the dd1 was wanting to properly simulate the higher forces you get in certain situations like high downforce cars, hard compressions like the one on nords, or high banks. with the csw2.5 i would have to compromise and just accept it was gonna clip at those times. it really adds a lot to "muh immersion"

Actually all modern race cars employ some type of power steering which takes away a lot of that effort to the drivers. Take a minute to look around different race car paddocks and notice the physical build of the majority of the drivers. Not many drivers have the build of the rock or vin diesel to drive a car for at race pace for 3+ hours but most are more slim and wiry types of builds. I really think most sim racers over estimate the amount of sheer force or resistance that a driver "fights" through the wheel racing an automobile.

How are heavier/larger rims responsiveness on the CSL DD with the boost pack?

  • @anticommoncore4065

    2 жыл бұрын

I have a CSW v2.5(Forza Wheel/XboxHub), and I received my CSL DD with a Formula V2.5 wheel on Sept2-2021. The DD is quicker than the CSW with the same force, but higher fidelity feedback. The CSL DD FFB dampening between my Formula V2.5 wheel and the Forza wheel is slight, and the response is slower, due to the larger diameter rotational speed. The CSL DD upgrade from CSW v2.5 is only in the fidelity, and your ability to convey quicker response to loss of traction, as compared to the CSW. Even though the CSW vastly improved my spin recovery over my previous Logitec DFGT wheelbase, the CSL DD is still an improvement in spin recovery over the CSW. I'm happy. Foregoing the DD1 allowed me to purchase the new Formula V2.5, and still save $370.(actually only saved $350 since I purchased both 5nm and 8nm PSU's, as explained below) Running too much FFB on my friends DD1 just slowed my lap times. He feels the same way, and dials it back to 10-14nm depending on sim. While I do miss a little more FFB force, in some cars, just not enough to pay an additional $720 for it. We both agree the CSL DD is slightly smoother, and just as quick, though. My friend is also considering buying a CSL DD, as a backup, as he has had to send his DD1 back for service once. Also take note: I spent an extra $20 to get the 5nm PSU, and then cut it's molex connector off. Then I made an adapter to connect the CSWv2.5 PSU to that 5nm PSU molex connector, and confirmed that the CSWv2.5 PSU 24v/7.5 amp(same Fanatec P/N on the brick as Boost kit but different connector) works to enable Boost mode, as shown on the Fanatec driver home screen. In other words, find the proper molex PSU connector, and at least a 24v/7.5a PSU, and you can save on the $130 Boost Kit upgrade price.

I went DD1 because I prefer higher ffb forces without clipping, this replaces the lateral g forces I would normally feel if I were driving in real life. In other words, I am not necessarily trying to replicate the actual forces one would feel while driving for example a gt3, but the higher forces allow me to better feel what is going on since I have no other senses to judge by, not including sight and sound of course. I would be interested to see if a csl DD with a motion rig could change all of that...

How does the csl dd compare when you add some inertia and friction to its settings. I run a sim-ply.city sw 20 wheel and what I’ve found is that If I run it with lower inertia and friction and don’t need much power but if I turn up the inertia and friction I will use much more of it’s available power. Even though setting it up like this doesn’t translate into lap times it does give the base a more realistic and natural feel or at least I believe it does.

DD1, easy pick. Because you can output 15Nm of torque in linear mode, which is much more intuitive than peak mode which compresses the whole data, but is pushing up the lower torque sections. With the CSL DD or GT DD Pro both 8Nm it’s in my opinion too weak for linear mode.

  • @alpha007org

When I tried Simucube 2 Pro side by side with DD2 I can tell that Simucube 2 is better hands down. I don't know how to describe the feeling, but the Simucube is snappier, so you can more easily catch slides. You just "feel" by how much you have to counter with Simucube, whereas with DD2 you have to get used to a feel it provides. Simucube also has less "friction" when you are rotating the wheel than DD2. I'm maybe using wrong words, but you have to try it, and you WILL feel the difference.

When you are in Fanatec ecosystem, it's hard to see what are you compromising. It's easy when they release a new wheel, you buy it and just slap onto your base. But if you look at a broader picture, you can buy a superb rim and your "dream" (cost/function wise) buttonbox, both from a different manufacturers, screw things together and it will cost you maybe a little more, but you'll have everything to your liking. That's why we love PC so much. Fanatec as a company have a brilliant marketing. Almost everyone I saw who bought something from them, they became "the best ecosystem". I don't know what mental tricks are in play here but you can see it even in numerous youtube videos. Example: Their pedals suck, they cost a lot, you have to buy "performance pack" (or whatever it's called) but people are still recommending them.

Where are you getting the price of $489 for a CSL DD? The base is $350, $150 more for the 'boost' power supply and/or at least $150 for a wheel if you buy a universal hub otherwise it is at least $200 for a wheel. Then add tax and shipping. I was going to order the base (no boost) with a universal hub which was $570 after tax and shipping. Side note: You may want a better racing cockpit... when you put the wheel on, the whole thing moved quite a bit. Not good.

DD2, my choice. 5 years warranty, more torque ( and this is a great advantage because you can Just put DD2 at 40/50% torque, preventing overheating, and consequently making the product last much longer, with almost no chance of defects. CSL DD has to work at the limit, so it can give more problems.

If you're going to drive the csl dd at it's maximum torque setting then it's not a wheelbase you should consider buying. I don't run my old csl elite at max and I've had it since it's release with 0 issues. Granted I've never raced on a dd but the csl dd is for people who don't want to run high torque. Also there's issues with clipping at running any wheel base at it's maximum settings to consider.
