WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

After listening to this call numerous times over the years, I now feel pretty strongly that this caller is a poe/troll. I'm also amazed at the prevalence of a claim to be "ex-atheist" appearing in so many of these old clips. Isn't there some kind of name for this fallacious argument? Like, the "I used to be like you" fallacy, or something? It's just so annoying seeing it so much, and theists must feel as though it has some sway or they wouldn't bother to throw it in (literally...look at the way the caller just casually mentioned it during a barrage of statements, making no mention of it prior to that). But here's the real heart of this issue as I see it: even if we ignore that I think this caller is a troll and is therefore by definition arguing in bad faith, I still feel that the "ex-atheist" claim is often a bad faith argument, both because of the way it's delivered (e.g. as part of a gish gallop), and the frequency with which it appears despite having nothing to do with the topic at hand. I'm not saying it's automatically a fallacy if someone says, "I used to be an atheist," or anything like that, but I do see a pattern of what I will call fake, dishonest arguments regarding claims to having been an atheist* at sometime in the past, whilst also conflating the word atheist to mean almost whatever they want, which is just another way this argument feels so dishonest to me, because never does the one claiming to be ex-atheist ever bother to define what they mean by atheist or even care to see if there is agreement/conflict with definitions (i.e. they just want to spew out their argument and don't care to engage with the "other side," which tells me they have no interest in honest debate).

"I used to be an atheist" makes sense, if you understand that "being mad at God," or "hating God," or not wanting to follow some religion's rules makes someone an atheist to many christians. Most of them are incapable of understanding that there really are people who don't believe in their god. They think we're in denial, or rebellion.

To be fair, everyone in the world is born an atheist. Then our parents, schools, door knocking nutters etc, start tinkering with it. In my book, they should leave it all alone, on both sides, atheist or theist, until we are 18. By then, based on logic and evidence, we should fairly well know where we want to sit. And if we did, I have a feeling that all the world's churches would be a LOT emptier even than they are now. Wonderful quote is perhaps quite relevant here. "If we could actually properly reason with theists, of ANY denomination, there simply wouldn't be any" Mic drop......lol

I call it "flashing their atheist creds" and generally, the more quickly they flash them in a call, the more entertaining/ridiculous the call generally turns out to be. It's actually part of my "filter process" a)theist only calls (I'm looking for a fight) b)early flashing of the atheist creds c)immediate/early blowing the hosts ("I just love the show/you've taught me so much but/etc...") If those three boxes are ticked, I'm in. As far as a formal fallacy, I think it's akin to an appeal to authority, albeit one's own, no longer extant authority, oddly enough...

Newsflash for believers. God didn’t create animals, because they are perfect creatures without sin and are accepted in heaven. If he couldn’t create perfect human beings without sin, how could he do so with animals? Oh I forgot, he gave us “free will.” If he was such a brilliant creator, he could’ve given us free will but still created us to be honest decent human beings without sin.

Rebecca Leeman . I remember reading through a list of stories written by certain authors, when I came across the first few words from a religious author. It went something like, “Do you remember your first book made out of material, where you first took Jesus into your heart at age TWO?” I felt sick, that’s pure child abuse in my opinion. And yes, they love to change the words and the context of the story. Like slavery is paying off a debt. Not likely, when their god says you can beat your slave nearly to death with a rod, and you can sell your daughters to slavery. Also I’m at a complete loss to understand how any members of your own sex can be believers. It has to be the most misogynistic book ever written. Treated like cattle, virgins including underage are fair game for soldiers, etc etc.

@@rickydarcilover5581 Thats only the surface, too. All the pro-life crowd base their views on religion, and yet the bible talks about the literal murder of infants and cutting fetuses out if the wombs of women. In Numbers, it says a man can make his wife get an abortion if he thinks she cheated. Lot was called a righteous man, yet he offered his two daughters to a group of men to be raped. Even looking past the patently idiotic stories, the "moral" message of the bible is reprehensible.

John George . Well John I’ve got some bad news for the pro lifers. There is a book written by a prominent biologist and zoologist, Dr Abbey Hafer, entitled, “The not so intelligent designer.” Firstly she gives tons of reasons why no one could purposely design the human body the way it is with the many faults she points out. Then she says god is the worlds most prolific abortionist. She explains that quite a number of human embryos die out during pregnancy. This is not counting miscarriages. She says that god must have favoured certain animals over us humans due to the fact that the human female body is not conducive to childbirth with it’s pelvic region, compared to a number of animals. On your subject about infants, if one had the mind to kill their paedophile neighbour, would they also kill that neighbour’s children? Not likely. However this god supposedly slaughtered thousands of babies and children, because he didn’t like what their parents did. So he brought about the great flood and wiped out all those kids and their parents and the entire human race. And we are supposed to believe that shit. Our friend Lot, was probably led astray by god saying, “You can sell your daughters to slavery.”

Well ok ok, that's not the best example, but how about when I'm discussing multiplication, like 2*2, people want to bring up addition. Ummm taking multiplication now, addition is viewed differently, and it's open to my interpretation.

In regard to the bible opening to a specific page, I've discovered as an English teacher for 16 years that this is not very remarkable. It has happened hundreds of times to me in classes where we were reading a story in first period, and kids in second period "randomly" open their text on the story we were reading in first period. I don't know the exact physics, but my assumption is that there is more air or less friction between the pages that were recently opened, or often opened. I've had students notice this and close their text, "randomly" open it again, and repeatedly have the book open to the same story.

Using the Bible to a random page and try to interpret to your current situation is the same as chosing a random horoscope reading and tell to the person reading it it allies to their astrological sign even if it dies not. You can be tricked in believing it applies directly to you every single time. A similar divination method has been used in china with the book I Ching. The fact that the bible, the horoscope an the I ching all seem to get right predictions tells me how easy a person can be fooled. We tend to see the hits and ignore the misses. I bet the same feat can be accomplished with a Harry Potter book.
