Famous Prohibition Drink: Last Word & a Mezcal Variation | How to Drink

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Last Word is a modern classic and bartenders favorite with roots in prohibition, what's not to love? Today I make a Last Word and spin out a variation on it on the fly.
The Last Word is a cocktail with countless variations, some of which you may not even know is a Last Word variation, for example the Paper Plane. It was invented at the Detroit Athletic Club during prohibition and was quite popular for a time. It faded into obscurity as the 20th century ground on though. In 2005 Murray Stenson, bartender at the Zig Zig Club in Seattle, was thumbing through a copy of Ted Saucier's Bottoms Up! (A cocktail guide from 1951) looking for something new / old to put on the menu. He shook up a Last Word and was hooked. The Drink traveled east to NYC in the hands of Audrey Saunders who put it on the menu at her Pegu Club in NYC (Great Bar, go there) and the drink was soon everywhere.
The coolest thing about the Last Word though is how well it works as a formula. You can easily swap out a couple of ingredients and wind up with a near perfect drink that's completely different from the original. Maybe dial in the ratios a touch and you're there. So in this one I made a Last Word and then spun out a variation on the fly, and tweaked that variation slightly. Don't have name for that drink yet, got any ideas?

The book references “here” because it was released as a publicity promotion for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC. I think that is what Ted means by “here” being NYC. I picked up a 1962 original full color version of this book last week at a library book sale for $2.00(!) and it is truly awesome in its full color version! Highly recommend. Edit: “here” could also refer to Detroit as it’s not clear if the notes came from Ted or from the cocktail authors.

I really began to enjoy this drink more when I made it to the original spec, resulting in a 1 oz drink that can be dispatched in a sip or two. At a 2.5-4 oz range, I always get too fatigued halfway through to finish it, and this is one that really needs to be COLD. I think its intent and purpose is right there in the name... its the final drink, refreshing but complex, to close out a night on.

@@davidcassidy602 I hydrate between them and eat good clean meals too, haha! But yes, I meant it as a hyperbolic turn of phrase to quantify my love of a properly mixed classic gin cocktail. I don't actually pound gin and champagne cocktails all day of course.

We actually just made Last Word for the first time & really liked it. I didn't know what to expect but it was a very well balanced drink. Also really like the mezcal variations. I'll have to put them on my list to try. Cheers!

Coming back to this video after you recommended this cocktail on Twitter. Your mezcal variation is close to a Naked and Famous (Mezcal, lime juice, Yellow Chartreuse, and Aperol) which is one of my current favorites. I also made a similar riff on a Negroni with Mezcal, Ancho Reyes, and Campari that turned out surprisingly good.

Holy hell that Mezcal variant #2 is amazing! Well done with the smoky and spicy. I didn't think I'd find a variant I liked more than the Final Ward, but here we are.

I love this cocktail. Currently I work at a Mexican restaurant/bar and they a variation with mezcal too. It’s basically Mezcal, Green Chartreuse, Pineapple juice, Lime and Agave and it’s served on a rock glass with a big ice cube. It is call “La Ultima Palabra” that means The Last Word in Spanish. Personally I love both of them!

A mezcal last word does exist!!! And to be honest, I only substitute the gin for mezcal and keep everything else the same. It's really good. Another substitution for gin I regularly do is a Peat's word (seen in John Brown Underground in Lawrence Kansas by the wonderful Cammie). Use peated scotch (JBUG used Compass Box Peat Monster and so do I)

I have been making this drink for the past few months, I do know of a version called the last of the Oaxacan's that uses Mezcal its from a bar in California. Also there is a mockingbird variant that uses watermelon and jalapeno and its wonderful. Great video as always!

I created a mezcal version I called "Smokey Words" at my bar. Also did a Heated Words variation with green chili vodka instead of gin, a crushed Thai chili, a jalapeno wheel, and a few dashes of Thai chili bitters. Both were quite popular.

The most notorious mezcal last word riff i can think of is the naked and famous (equal parts mezcal, yellow chartreuse, aperol, and lime). Your version seems delicious as well, will have to give it a go.
