Alan Thicke (born Alan Willis Jeffrey; March 1, 1947 - December 13, 2016) was a Canadian actor, songwriter, and game and talk show host. He is the father of singer Robin Thicke. In 2013, Thicke was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Thicke was best known for playing Dr. Jason Seaver on the 1980s sitcom Growing Pains on ABC.
Alan Thicke, one of American television’s most beloved dad in the iconic role of psychiatrist Jason Seaver on the TV show Growing Pains, was born Alan Willis Jeffrey on March 1, 1947 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Alan graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in English and Psychology. He began his career in the entertainment industry as an all-night disc jockey.
His career truly began when he signed up as a writer for the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Unsatisfied with the meagre success he had achieved, he set off to the US where he was assigned to write and produce TV shows for stars like Richard Pryor, Flip Wilson, Bill Cosby, Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, Bobby Darin, Barry Manilow and Olivia Newton-John, along with the iconic comedies America 2 Night, the NBC movie The Secret She Carried and Fernwood 2 Night.
Alan received Emmy nominations, two as an actor and five as writer. He produced the NBC game show Celebrity Sweepstakes and Wizard of Odds in the mid 1970s for which he received immense critical acclaim. Thicke has written over backgrounds for 45 TV shows which include Facts of Life, Different Strokes, and Wheel of Fortune.
His big break as an actor came in 1980, when hosted ‘The Alan Thicke Show’, a talk show that remains, to this day, the biggest in the history of Canadian Television. The overwhelming approval received by the Alan Thicke show led to the creation of another show by Thicke, ‘Thicke of the Night’. However, this success was short lived as the show was cancelled after losing to Johnny Carson’s highly impressive Tonight Show.
However, in 1985, Alan was on back on Television, never to leave again, in the iconic role of psychiatrist and father Jason Seaver on ABC-TV’s super hit series Growing Pains. The TV show shot his career to new heights and he became famous internationally as one of American television’s most beloved fathers. The series was on air for seven years, and Thicke was awarded several awards including a Golden Globe nomination for best actor for his role. Following that, Alan underwent a serious change to alter his ‘good guy’ public image and played Dennis Dupree, a vain and pompous talk show host on the NBC series Hope and Gloria.
Alan is an extremely versatile actor who has played iconic and intense roles in movies such as Obsessed, Shadow of the Bear, Any Place But Home and The Windsor Protocol. Along with his acting, he also penned two books on pregnancy and parenting: How Men Have Babies: The Pregnant Father’s Survival Guide (1999) and How to Raise Kids Who Won’t Hate You (2006). Thicke has been given the title of “Father of the year” by organizations including The Father’s Day Council of Los Angeles, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, and The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Alan established the Alan Thicke Centre for Juvenile Diabetes Research in London, Canada, in 1989 when his own son was diagnosed with the disease.
Alan Thicke has been nominated for Golden Globe and Emmy award several times for his performances as an actor and comedian.
On December 13, 2016, Thicke collapsed while playing ice hockey with his son Carter at Pickwick Gardens in Burbank, California. The manager of the rink said he was talking and even joked to his son to take a photo as he was being wheeled out on a stretcher. Thicke died later that day of type-A aortic dissection at the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, at the age of 69. On December 19, 2016, the cast of Growing Pains, including Leonardo DiCaprio, reunited at Thicke's funeral; a eulogy was given by his friend Bob Saget, and his son, Robin, offered a humorous remembrance. He was buried at Santa Barbara Cemetery in Santa Barbara, California.

Alan was a friend of mine. I appeared on several sketches on Thicke of the Night and sang the theme song one night. When it was cancelled, Alan called me to help him pack up his office and take it to his personal office which was a house in Sherman Oaks that he lived in while going through his divorce from Gloria Loring. To help him out after Thicke of the Night, I helped him in his office and my mom even came to help. I watched his boys Brennan and Robin, too. It was a lot of fun talking to some big stars when we answered the phone. I have so many great stories. I worked with him when he was developing “Growing Pains”, and I was there for the filming in the beginning. Alan was very supportive when I moved to Vegas because I had a big gig here that I couldn’t pass up. We talked on the phone after I moved here, but like so many friends we drifted apart when our lives changed (marriages, etc). Thank you Scott for this video! If you ever want to see my personal photos of Alan and his home and on the set of his talk show, let me know.😊

Unreal. He was an icon. I didn't know he passed away at the same hospital as John Ritter ( My aunt used to work there, she's retired now but she was in the room when Ritter passed. :( ) Anyway, maybe it's weird to say but I really liked Alan Thicke's voice, it was always so warm and friendly and welcoming. He was great on How I Met Your Mother, too. Sigh, I have to admit, death is kind of hard to talk about for me, but you do such a good job with this stuff. Very respectful. Thank you.

Where to even begin.... Alan Thicke was the typical 80's Dad. One that everyone wished was there own! I was a Mom myself by 1985 and I'd watch Growing Pains every week, and later in syndication daily! My kid's were raised watching Growing Pains. Wherever they were in the house, when the theme song played everyone would come and gather around the hige counsel tv in our family room. It didn't even matter if you had homework, you took a break to watch! It was the one show we all watched together. I love that his grave marker is pure white and that proud red Canadian maple leaf adorns it. Yeah, he was a proud Canadian, but he was America's Dad! I'm glad that he was doing what he loved when his heart began to fail. Not everyone gets that opportunity. I know it came as a great shock when I heard it on late night tv, probably Jimmy Kimmel. Lol. It was hard to fathom...he always seemed so healthy and fit, I just never imagined. Speaking as a retired nurse, I can tell you it caught him by surprise. He didn't die of a heart attack which would have symptoms leadinng up to it and could be taken care of, he died of a tear in his aorta, which.is a whole nother ball game. There are few symptoms leading up to it and most the time is fatal. Unless your really close to a hospital with advanced cardiac unit. If you watch video of Alan that day, at the rink, he didn't seem panicked or even in serious distress. He seemed very calm. For which I am greatful for. He has left a legacy of music and tv programing and has wonderful talented family to keep the Thcke legacy alive. RIP To America's Dad and Proud Canadian Alan Thicke, always in our heart and memories! Jill Gross

@Scott, Another great video! I knew that he had passed, but didn’t realize that it had occurred while he was playing hockey with his sons. Your tribute with the puck was so very heartwarming. I’m one of those people who are what I call an intuitive Empath. You would probably call me crazy, and that’s okay because you haven’t lived my life. Just 4 months prior to his tragic death, and I’m not even saying it could have been prevented as I don’t believe in in coincidences. That being said, Alan Thicke had requested and was being given a reading by a young man named Tyler Henry who is quite gifted, and he sees everyone who’s anyone in California. He has a program on E! This occurred 4 months prior to Mr. Thicke’s death. During the reading Mr. Thicke’s father or grandfather came through with an urgent message that he needed to have his heart checked and his cholesterol levels checked which was something that the father or grandfather should have done himself, and he would have lived longer. This was obviously a genetic issue. Mr. Thicke insisted that no males in his family had ever been diagnosed with heart disease or died of undiagnosed heart disease. So being a polite, 19 year old at the time Tyler just apologized and moved on to something else. I felt like Mr. Thicke should have listened to the message he was being given at the time in my whole being. I was just so sad to hear that he passed away from the exact thing he’d been warned about just 4 months earlier.

I absolutely love Canadian because I grew up there before we moved to any other state so I really love Dylan sick I thought he was a wonderful human being and it's always very sad to hear about his passing it was very grievous to me when I heard it cuz he was so young God bless you for all the films that you do and you do bring out a lot of Canadians which I dearly love you for thank you so much may God really bless your life take care of you through the cosmos and I really did think he was a wonderful person sad that we always lose someone that is that beautiful but every Life is beautiful and so you know that he's spreading tears somewhere else that's just my hope and a blessed dream for him and I hope that if we do come back through I hope that she has another beautiful chance at another wonderful life like you lived these are the kind of blessings I wish for everyone so don't hate on me because I love the Canadians a great deal and I wish everyone many many blessings and by the way Happy Father's Day to all the gentlemen that her father's and for all the sons that have fathers may you richly be blessed and even for those that do not have their fathers with them I wish you the greatest happiness the memory of someone that loved you that much.

Great video! The guy was a legend. I grew up in the 80's watching Growing Pains. I didn't grow up in a friendly family environment so tv was a huge escape for me. I always wanted to be a part of that family as a kid.

As soon as I saw the Thumbnail Scotty it took me back to the 80’s and 90’s when the kids and I watched every episode of Growing Pains. Jason Seaver a wonderful Dad in the show. Alan Thicke with an infectious smile got me every time. Didn’t know much else about him except that he loved hockey. So glad I got to see his resting place with you. So sweet of you to place a puck on his grave. I am sure he liked that from a fellow Canadian. Thank you for bringing back some beautiful memories. Take care. As always lots of love from all of us. ❤️🤗✌🏼💕
