It was stupid of them to get married without ever even introducing their kids and getting to know everyone.

I think it would have made life alot easier if they would have gotten to know each other from the start. After the wedding it's to late. If you're the children you're stuck.

I used to love these when I was a kid. But as an adult, I noticed something about them: they're based on children's novels, almost none of which are read today. There are thousands of young adult novels written by Kin Platt, Fran Arick, Paul Zindel, Judy Blume, and others, half of which are forgotten. Then again, how can you blame today's kids for not wanting to read this stuff. They don't have to wait while their teenage sister hogs the phone, they don't have to have quarters for the payphone, no renting videos from the local video store, no fax machines anymore, no writing letters to your friend in another state and waiting for a reply, and mom doesn't tell her son, "No, you can't try on your sister dresses."

I was a child and teen of the 70's. I remember watching these as well and reading those books too. They made 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret' this year and I watched the movie with my 11 year old. She loved the movie. I was at first hesitant to watch the movie because I heard it was terrible and everybody was trashing it. My first thought was that they changed the book (which I adored when I was my daughter's age) to make it more like all the other young adult movies that are seen on Netflix. Imagine my surprise when the movie was EXACTLY like the book! I couldn't figure out what everyone's problem was with the movie. It was a different time for sure but I think kids today are handicapped by all the media available to them. I've watched some of the movies that are out there now and they seem so unrealistic and mean. The values we held back then seem to be values they mock today. Funny thing is my daughter felt just like Margaret so I think the media is doing a great disservice to today's youth by telling them THIS is what should be bothering you. I may be rambling...

Kind of weird and creepy how he forces her to hug him and she clearly wasn't ready. Then starts an adoption after a short time and never asks her about it, and screams in her face to top it all off. Bizarre! This movie is disturbing on so many levels. 😂😂😂

Nine minutes in and I already hate how Carrie is being treated by her ugly (hearted) stepsisters and her stepfather.

This type of situation is never easy. My mother died when I was ten & I ended up with an abusive, alcoholic stepmother. At least Carrie's mother didn't marry someone alcoholic, but got away from someone like that. I would have loved to have been a part of this man's family. He was loving and caring.

I'm sorry that you had to endure that, Carrie. That loud, uncouth dago was bad enough. Having to share a bedroom with that harpie, Ginger, would be hell. Happy endings in such situations aren't as common in real life. I hope that you were able to keep your mental health before you could escape.

I do too! I was an adult when my mother remarried and that didn't make it any easier. His children were always catered to and given priority. Luckily I was independent and lived some distance from them. As time went on discovered they weren't as perfect as portrayed by my mother and her husband. Things got better for me after that.

This story is like 20 reddits posts i read today. Parents just assume they know whats best. If the kids reactions are THIS visceral as acted here, and then the parents trying to manipulate them. This is disturbing. They dont owe shit, they didnt ask to be born. A child at 12 has the right to choose if she wants to be adopted

Indeed, a child that age should not have been forced to be completely cut off from her living father. Why not make room for her lingering hope; in support of the possibility that in future she might be in relationship with her biological father?
