FAMILY OF MAN WHO JUMPED FROM CRUISE SHIP BLAMES THE CRUISE LINES PREDITORY PRCTICES ON SHIPS.
Brother of father of 3 who jumped from a cruise ship on the way back to Sydney say the way cruise ships run casinos was a main factor as to why he jumped. Emergency evacuatoin from the Utopia of the Seas even though the ship has not even started sailing yet.

in this gambling case everyone that is on this cruise should sue the family and the "estate" of the man because his actions ruined their cruise having to disrupt things searching for him and deal with all that goes with a jumper and because his mommy did not hold his hand and keep him from the casino......nonsense like this gets old the guy has a dozen other things going on in his life, already has financial issues, his mom just handed him $5,000 and then does not take a bit of interest in where he goes after that......but the cruise line is suppose to babysit him.....and PS if you want to be restricted to the nanny state laws of your country then stay in your country and in fact sign something that restricts you from leaving the nanny state so the rest of the world does not have to babysit you

@@kellymae2421yep, there's apparently a study showing that (depending how long your flight was or something like that) you should wait a couple of days before you go snorkeling because you could have issues breathing. But that's not Hawaii's fault that you can have trouble breathing after a flight, while snorkeling. Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything these days and it's sad. And then everyone is so quick to sue to get money to recoup their loved ones loss, but not everything is someone else's fault 🤷🏿♀️
It is not the cruise ship’s fault for someone’s inability to conduct themselves as a responsible adult, with their money. A grown adult needs to be accountable for one’s own actions. Just my humble opinion.
How about the family taking responsibility for NOT taking a gambling addict to a venue with a casino, And letting them go in!!!
The cruise lines are not predatory. If you can't control your spending, that's on you. People need to grow up & take responsibility.
If you have a gambling problem stay out of the casino and if you’re depressed don’t get drunk on a boat !

How is a cruise line supposed to know if you have a gambling problem
Sounds like the guy should have taken responsibility for himself before he jumped. The family has no right to blame the cruise lime.
No grown man should borrow money from mommy.

Says it all,doesn't it?!😮
As adults, we are accountable for our own actions. The Mom could have said no, don't go to the casino, I won't pay your debt off again. The man was probably trying to escape the misery he was in, and all the gambling did was make it worse, because he lost another $4000. I feel bad for the survivors, because they are all left with a loss. I can't imagine how the children are coping with this. So sad for the entire family.
As an adult you are 100 percent responsible for your own actions! I choose to never go in the casino on a ship or anywhere else. It's a huge waste of time & money in my mind!
Blaming the cruise lines? Seriously? You are responsible for your own actions.
As adults, we need to take responsibility for our actions.
A reminder to get depressed individuals to mental health care.
I've been on many cruises on various lines and never once was I forced to go into the casino. It is always tragic when someone takes their own life, but it was his decision to play, even after losing 5K. The family just is looking for someone to blame.
This man should not have been on a cruise period. He was a danger to himself and others. Whether he was drinking and gambling and possibly taking medication. He was responsible for his sad choice’s.
I’m sorry for that man and his family but clearly this is not the fault of the cruise line.
As an adult it is your responsibility
Definitely it is our responsibility to monitor our own spending!!!!
Compulsive gambling is compulsive gambling. The casino is not responsible for the actions of a compulsive gambler.
I think it’s up to us to keep track of our own money and not try to place the blame elsewhere when we are at fault! I’m so sorry for the man for all he was going through. He could have done the same with running up a tab drinking or shopping onboard. I feel bad for the mom now because she also faced these tragedies in the family alone with her son; now she’s left with this debt ( at least the $5K he borrowed from her) and now an additional death of her son…. smh, so sad. Thanks for sharing
Casinos do not go after customers and force them to play. If this was the case, every casino here in Las Vegas would be in court and/or shut down. The gentleman was old enough to know better, and if mom lent him $5,000, she really should have kept on eye on him knowing the trouble he was already in.
Exercise self control when gambling. That man had more problems than gambling 😢
I think any court would also say he had personal responsibility
Unfortunately, this sounds like the common problems that can come along with gambling. Nothing unique to the cruise line.

Well, for the sake of argument, they seem to be very efficient at tracking how much you spend in the casino so I think with the rest of the demographics they can get their hands on they’ll know whether or not you’ve got a problem. It could be argued. It’s not their problem, but you could make the same argument about drug dealers. I think gambling in casinos and on every sport now has gotten way out of hand. Clearly, it’s a problem for some people because the warnings at the end of each commercial for sports gambling are longer than the commercial.
Hey Don! Thanks for stating what many of us believe but are too scared to say in this world: "Personal accountability and responsibility" It amazes us that so many failings are blamed on an external cause... We've always said that both "lazy" and "stupid" are for life. That said, our sympathies goes out to the family regardless.
I feel like you hit it right in your assessment that people need to take accountability for their own actions and stop with the excuses and blaming other for their actions. It's a sad situation but it's not like the casino was targeting him. Only treating us like adults who can make our own life choices for better or worse
Another person playing the victim for bad choices
Not cruise ships fault. It personal responsibility.
Of the 30 or 40 cruises I have taken over the years, I have never been enticed by or seen first hand any predatory practices. Just like Nancy Regan says "Just say No"

Right? I pass through the casino every day when I'm onboard and none of the staff have never done more than smile and nod at me.
This family needs to discuss personal responsibility. We are all accountable for our choices.
Nope, it’s not on the cruise line. We all need to gamble responsibly, and that is on us to do. People always want to blame others for things that are their own fault.
I live in Australia and you are correct with our rules regarding gambling. Also people are responsible for there own choices not the cruise lines fault at all.
It’s up to us. So tired of people blaming everyone and everything for their problems. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. Cheers Don
I feel so sorry for this family. Addiction of any kind is so difficult to manage.
He's had a gambling problem...😑
You are correct - they are looking for someone to blame for the loss. Not the cruise line place to watch his money
What a bunch of bull on blaming the cruise line. He obviously had issues. The man was responsible for his own actions. Well said Don.
People nowadays refuse to take responsibility or lay blame wherever it rightfully belongs.. If the young man had depression issues or mental health issues the family knew about this ( not the cruise line) so they should've done more to ensure his safety, not feed his addiction by giving him more money to gamble. The mother gave him that money because he was out of control and she was trying to pacify him. ( Calm him down). You really can't blame a cruise ship for the choices this young man made ( God rest his soul) 🙏

I am guessing his mother has been enabling his behaviors for years. I have worked in mental health for 28 years, and this is such common behavior, but they don't want to be "the bad guy" to their family member with an issue. Also, the guy, if he knew he has a problem controlling his gambling, could have probably requested no access to the slots/card tables. I had a patient once do that after losing his inheritance at the casino. He requested the casinos put him on the black list, and he wouldn't be allowed entry, should his desire to gamble overcome his good sense.
We would love it if you had some Don’s Family Vacation’s t-shirts!!! We would love to wear them on our cruises. My husband and I watch you every evening after diner. Thank you so much for keeping us up to date on all the cruise news. (Please consider the T-shirts!!) 😉🥰
Prayers for the deceased family member- so sad that he was addicted-so many casino guests are- may win now, but they’ll eventually get all your money and more!!!
People need to be accountable for their actions regardless of their personal circumstances. This family seems to be looking for $$$$$$ and using his circumstances as a reason to blame the cruise line.
The family knew he had a problem before the cruise and yet they went along with him and now they blame the cruise line? Did they think he borrowed the additional money to buy a gift for the family? The family should not have even gone on the cruise with him and should have discouraged him from going - they enabled his problem
@lynettehamner8803

They also en enabled him by paying the first $5000...yet it's the Cruise Lines fault? You cannot help an addiction problem by playing part on continuing to enable them. His family knew he had lots of problems.

I agree with you Don. I have been on many cruises and no one has pressured me into gambling. I feel bad for his family but this man made this decision to gamble. No one forced him.
People should be aware of their own finances. Most people go into Casinos knowing how much to spend BEFORE entering.
No this gentleman had alot on his plate and was not dealing with it in the right way. My condolences to his family.
We dont think they are predatory at all. It sounds like he had a gambling addiction. Our pray go out to him and his family.
People are just plain crazy today
condolences to the family during this very hard time. but, responsibility was passengers not the ship industry. we must be our own advocates in this crazy world.
There's no way the cruise line is at fault.
I agree with you, Don, on the Casino.
I am not a gambler, but I have been on enough cruise ships to know that the casino is not there to make you rich. Personal responsibility.
As someone who deals with mental health issues, I understand what this man was going through. When you are in crisis, logic, reason and common sense don't come into play. I know, for me it was in the form of pills. I survived, he didn't. Please don't judge him so sharply, unless you've been there, you can't know the distress a person goes through. I fight every day, it's not easy. For this man, it was a tipping point and he lost the fight.
Be a responsible adult…?!? Ridiculous.
Everything's predatory now, and nobody wants to be held accountable for their actions anymore either. When you put those two together, you get situations like this. I pray for the family because now the kids don't have a dad. 😢
Not taking responsibility for his or her deeds appears to be hereditary.
Hope they can work things out for East Port. It would help with having another option for the New England cruises.
Of course Casinos are predatory -- it is also up to each adult to be responsible. Cruises might not be for this man.
And, please add; Most if not all, bank apps do NOT work with a VPN.
How easy (and money asking!) from that family to try to put the blame on everybody else except the man himself!!!! Shame on them. Honestly. How dare they? Unbelievable
I agree, people need to responsible for their actions. He wasn't a child and life happens, don't blame others for how your family member behaves.
Just stay out of the casino completely!!!!!

Or umm….. off the ship!
The Australian gentleman had financial problems. So was he hoping to recooperate his "problems" at the casino? It could also be assumed he never visited Las Vegas or sailed on a US based cruise ship because the perks and other offers are quite common at casinos those places since the family is saying those tactics were problematic to him. We walk past the casino on cruise ships or may play a few dollars, but we don't plan to take up residency in it. Funny how your problems are always someone else's fault.
There’s a reason hotels in Las Vegas don’t have balconies.
Do people that visit the buffet too often get to sue the cruise line for getting fatter?

Not the cruise lines fault! People are sue crazy.
Too bad the federal government can hire 80.000 IRS agents but no customs staff to serve tax paying cruisers.
Only question I have is why the money was lent to him at that time. I thought that you have to have the funds first not credit. So he did not have debt to the cruise line Mom should have said no till after the cruise
Thanks for what you do.
He clearly had an addiction, the guy killed himself, his mother couldn’t have stopped him! I don’t think that there should be incentives to gamble as it can be a slippery slope for people who have a susceptibility to addiction. The amount to suffering caused by addiction is unmeasurable and unending
Thank you for the update.
Most things the cruise lines offer on ships are predatory and designed to part fools from as much of their money as possible. But if people choose to give the cruise lines their money, that is the responsibility of the customers.
I have been on numerous cruises and I have yet to see anyone forced to play at the casino. The mom should have maybe spoken to the cruise line and asked them to stop him from playing.
Losing it all isn’t a ships Blame as a person that lost 30 people friends and family and I’m still here we will survive. That was a choice
Everyone needs to take accountability for their own actions.
it's up to the people to take care of themselves
It is not the cruises fault about the casino. Each and every person should know there limits.
It's completely up to the individual to track their own spending whether on a cruise or at a land-based casino.
Good work don.
You are very kind and right Don...we do understand perfect storms and as much as anyone tries to help and say not more or whatever,,,hard to contrul a grown man...and anything that is fun to a person and raises those needed sometimes endorphans can be abused. It is all very very sad..prayers for them and an example and learning opportunity for us all.
No free drinks in the ship casino in Australia? TF? That man had problems... RIP to him, but no... Cant blame the cruiseline.
Typical, guy has a gambling habit and kills himself and they want to blame others. Take some accountability.
WOW. I can see him being upset, doesn't excuse gambling, and mommy should have said No. He was a grown person needed to stop. Sorry the family had to go through that. It's up to those gambling to keep track. I do.
All casinos are predatory. It is also up to the individual. However, circumstances can mean that some individuals need help.
I think if you have a gambling or alcohol problem cruising may not be the best trip option. If you go you are responsible for what happens.
I think it is up to each individual to be responsible
I have casino offers to Australia for a free cruise and $1500 in free play, so I know they do offer freebies. I also know that Carnival casinos have daily limits ($2500) with the exception of some specialty Elite cruises where the limit is higher. No matter the reason he obviously had an addiction that sadly led him to decide to take his life.😔
Yes Gambling is advertised on TV for now in Australia
Great video. It's important to know how to control your gambling but it yoi can't you need to stay away
It's up to us and the individuals that play in the casino to either not want to stop or ask for help not the cruise rules
I have somewhere around 60 cruises and in the casino I never felt any pressure to keep it going
Everyone wants to point the finger to people just to do it and not take the blame for themself
People always try to put the blame on someone or something else. Take responsibility for yourself
Advertising of gambling is limited to certain times in Australia but it is allowed. It’s allowed between 8.30am and 4pm and then 8.30pm to 5am.
Cruise ships are not responsible for someone losing a lot of money in the casino. May they could set a spending limit?
Something is missing in the guy with the casino bill. Normally the casino will not lend you money unless you have some means to pay, even if just a cared card attached to your room card. This is not on the casino..
There's those that blame the airlines for making them pay for two seats when they can't fit into just one. There's those that blame the casino when they keep losing. Q: What's missing here? A: Those that only blame themself.
I think there is more to that story about not having enough customs agents then what’s given in your blog. Moving ships into a port is a many many year effort. I’d like to know if all the paperwork was filled out and the process to get the extra staffing that’s required. It’s not like they have a reserve of custom agents standing by. I’m sure they’ve already talked to their congressman and he’s putting pressure on somebody but I can’t help but believe they probably forgot something.
