10 years ago I bought the DVDS of Seasons 1 and 2 of Family for my then-teenaged daughter because I wanted her to see a quality show that portrayed morals and good values. She and I watched together. and she has watched many times since. I thank you for sharing this wonderful series. I really loved this episode, especially the end. I remember the review in TV Guide when Family premiered on ABC; it said everyone would want to move next door to the Lawrence's.

A lovely episode. Truly shocking how real estate was so affordable only 40 years ago. $65,000 for a beautiful house and all that land, in California no less. It'd be in millions today. Costs skyrocketed beyond belief.
@Xanthas71

The farm is supposed to be in Oregon (although not filmed there). $65K in 1978 is equivalent in purchasing power to around $256K in 2019. Still an enormous bargain compared to today's real estate prices. But mortgage interest rates were close to 10% back then.

So nice to see these shows again and remind me of what a good family is like. Thank you.
I notice that the farmhouse kitchen has the same style of oven that the Lawrence's have at home. I have never seen this type of stove before, wow, so cool! It has two different ovens plus that roll-top oven. Very handy when cooking huge meals for large families, or I guess for feeding the workers.

GREAT show, especially this episode. I should have put it on DVR this morning on the MeTV-Plus channel. I wish there was a 2023 version of this show --- same style of show with similar characters. TOO bad James Broderick and Sada Thompson died.
This still is one of my all time favorite television shows. I was able to buy seasons 1 thru 4 on DVD. The storylines still hold value today. And how great is is to see Lance Kerwin in this episode. His show James At 15 (and 16) was also a huge favorite of mine! I wish I could get every episode of each of these shows on DVD. Such wonderful nostalgia!
37:58 so sweet. The music made me think of my youth. What a beautiful show.

I usually think Kate and Doug are pretty good parents, but to call a real estate agent in to sell the place without even speaking to Willie is wrong. They should have sat him down and showed him all the expenses the place racks up and asked him what he could contribute, if he wanted to keep the place. And don't forget they took a loan against it when he decided to marry the young lady that was ill and wouldn't live long. Willie needs to grow up.
Once again, thank you for another great upload. Just in time for Thanksgiving!

Hollywood, if the multiple strikes ever end, should bring back this show. Granted, you will have to produce an entirely new cast, since all the members are either dead (Sada Thompson and James Broderick) or too old by now, such as Kristy McNichol and Quinn Cummings.
As much as I usually thank Willie is spoiled rotten the farm and the land is rightfully his since Hattie left it to him to do what he wants to.

thank you for posting. I love this show.
Long time fan of the show even though I was in Kindergarten when this ep originally aired and the show wouldn't have been watched by my parents who felt all TV (except Lawrence Welk Show) was evil...I started watching Family in syndication after elementary school and immediately was drawn to the rich character development, serious but poignant without being preachy storylines...Just an all around consistently well written, acted, and produced show that I am now appreciating again as most of Season 3/4/5 isn't in my DVD collection is found here on YT....You know the show's timeless when you could relate to the 'kids' of the family watching back in the day and now can totally relate to the middle aged parents of young adult children...Definitely a 'full circle' moment hearing Doug/Kate dialogue about raising young adults/teens, middle age crisis angst, etc., now watching this show again as a 51 yo ☺
This was so very precious. Thank you for posting.
He wants it he should find away to help pay for it...

Well he is working, at his tv show The Dame Game. But I noticed in all his outrage at his parents saying they cannot afford to keep the place he never suggests that he will contribute. @@Crymeariver227
Well Willy, you don’t want to sell a farm that was inherited to you, start paying for the upkeep. The deeds in your name, why are Mom and Dad paying for everything? If you sell it, who does the money go to? Mom and Dad? Nope, so pay for the upkeep yourself. ITS YOUR PROPERTY. Willy is a huge looser. Mooches off his parents, but loves to dictate what they should do.

Food safety rules are clear about not stuffing the turkey until you put it in the oven because of salmonella risk. Kate would totally know this and she would not have stuffed the turkey hours and hours before it was due to be cooked. And did Buddy actually eat some of the raw stuffing? OMG.

Kate is supposed to be edging on 50 in this 1978 episode. That means she ought to have been born somewhere late 1920s and early 1930s. So, she grew up between the 1930s and the 1940s. Make a Google search of women farmers between the 1930s and the late 1940s and look at pictures. MOST American women farmers back then did NOT wear pants they wore work day dresses. Kate is a women of that generation. In the late seventies, most middle-aged women preferred wearing what they have been used to wear: dresses and skirts. Back in the late 1970s, pants and jeans were fine for girls and women under 30-35, but most middle-aged women over 40 did not think it suited them nor flattered their figure.
