African Greys are absolutely the smartest of all the parrot species in my opinion. Years ago I saw a news report about Alex, an African Gray who was part of a research project at a major university in Arizona. His profound intelligence and ability to carry on an interactive conversation just amazed me and I have been a fan of his ilk ever since. Gizmo is another stellar example of the extreme intelligence of these birds.

I've known other people who had to give up a new bird, because the birds they already had would attack it. So their only option was in their opinion, was to keep Gizmo alone by himself. @@gizmothegreybird Please he is SO funny. I’ve never seen a bird imitate bird noise-not mimicking other bird calls but actually _saying_ “chirp chirp!” before Gizmo. It’s so clear that you just talk to him like any other friend all the time because his social reciprocation, and the level which he contributes his own phrases and ideas to conversations, is just unmatched! If my disabilities didn’t make it impossible to have another presence in my living space with me I bet I would’ve ended up as a bird person eventually. Or some kind of animal person. But that situation isn’t considered treatable anymore so I’m very ok with watching Gizmo videos almost everyday instead 😅

And it was so contextual, I knew right then and there that they really do learn to understand words and use them appropriately.

Dr. Pepperberg's Alex (unfortunately, he was essentially a lab rat) would say "Wanna go back" when he didn't want to "work" any longer. They share a similar part in their brain like us that allows them to do that. Just shows how big that part really is. It's small but big. They have to learn how to talk by a certain age or they won't grasp it just like us. 🤷 and to say humans aren't genetically mutated is a lie because animals walk the earth before humans and look at all the similarities we have to some of them

I’m so glad you talked about African Greys using English - CORRECTLY and IN CONTEXT. My cousin has a grey, Buddy, and it is absolutely true that greys can communicate in English just like people do. One day, we were standing outside the house but Buddy could hear us, and he said ‘you’re talking too loud". My cousin had a dog Buddy didn’t like. The dogs name was Max. My cousin pulled a turkey out of the oven, and Buddy said, "Awwww Max!” Then made a laughing sound. There’s so many more examples with Buddy. People who don’t know greys, or even animals, think I’m nuts when I tell them greys can speak human language and are complicated as humans are - but it’s so true. And Gizmo shows that too.

@Robert Ray. It’s ok. I’m feeling better now after some time has passed. I know now after the autopsy he would not have lived much longer. Despite popular belief many African Greys do not live much past 25 years in the wild nor captivity. In the wild they fall pray to predators both animal and human. In captivity they do not live any longer than that sometimes because they are genetically prone to hardening of the arteries which chokes of blood supply to the liver or or their organs and they die of heart attack or stroke. Even Einstein the famous African Grey who had great care did not have long life. An African Grey can live longer if they can be prevented from eating nuts and seeds which are candy to them and cause fatty liver or hardening of arteries. I am very glad mine did not have fatty liver because that is painful to them and a slow death. Im glad mine died quickly and without pain. To live long African Greys need to be flighted for optimal exercise to thwart of the fattty diet diseases. Not sure how it is working out but some authorities are presently recommending only a teaspoon of seeds or 1 walnut sized nut per day perhaps given as a treat and the rest to be vegetable and whole grain pellets, much fresh vegetables and some fruit. African Greys usually hate pellets or mine did. Sometimes can trick them into eating them by making bird health friendly baked items and bake them into it for them to pick out like a “seed” and eat for fun. I did not know the importance of this seed seeking foraging behavior when I got my bird and the internet wasn’t perfected then. No youtube or anything. My bird could not be flighted when I got them because the pet store had clipped his wings, I never clipped him but he never learned to fly. If I ever had a bird again I’d try to rehab it to fly while young for the exercise. So much to lean and know and even the scientists still don’t know a lot. I kept my bird a little skinny thinking I was avoiding fatty liver disease which I did. But I was unaware African Greays will still get a fatty disorder calledhardening if of the arteries anyway if given more than a teaspoon of seed mix in a day. My seed mix had pellets but African Greys always gravitate toward eating as much seed as they can get away with. Nothing brings more joy than a well cared for very interactive bird. Even when my bird was beginning to not feel as well he still hid it and played, talked a lot and had a good time,
