It's important not to overlook Goggins who has stated he intentionally AVOIDED playing the games and using source material to play his character as it represents the other end of the spectrum for acting in a video game property. If your take away from this series is that actors should know the source material then I just have to respectfully disagree. I'll agree SOMEBODY should, like a writer, producer, maybe even the director, but actors shouldn't be required or expected to know a video game's history to take on a role in its universe.

@@recantedforger5850 I agree about goggins and wasn't insinuating that the actors need to play the game to perform well. It was more about how the attitude on set wasn't "do not play the game" like other projects have stated. I also agree that it is important for the writers and producers to have experience with the source material. I just appreciated the respect that both of the actors but especially ella purnell had when asked the question.

@@recantedforger5850 The other thing about games is that it's easy for different people to get a different idea on what an adaptation should be like, based on their own experiences or even just how they play. So a director who insisted that their cast play but then found that they and the actor had different interpretations of the source could also cause friction, depending on the personalities involved. I think that you have it right - there's nothing wrong with either approach as long as someone with input has good knowledge of the material.

Normally...in these adaptations, the reason why the actors are asked not to play the game, is because the direct storyline is being adapted to the screen and most times some changes are made when translated to the screen. They ask the actor not to access the original story because they want to tell 'their version' of it. In this specific instance though... they are not adapting he story from the game, only the world and lore of the game. The story is entirely a new creation. So letting the actors play around in this world will only enhance the authenticity of their character's portrayal.

She was a badass out of the gate; they just did a clever job of establishing her bona fide in the montage/interview with the vault elders at the beginning of her story. A hallmark of visual story telling is the idea of; show, don't tell. Another is that the plot and scenes being shown should be among the most interesting and important moments of said character's life. Meaning it's a very difficult balance to strike for the plot to portray the most impactful moments for a character while also supplying enough exposition in a "show, don't tell" manner justifying the abilities and actions of a character, especially a character in an action roll. That's why an overwhelming majority of action characters are soldiers, veterans, or cops; it serves as a shorthand justification for how they're able to accomplish their daring feats in service to the plot while focusing on the most pivotal moments. Good storytelling is easy to recognize, but incredibly difficult to write.

I want to preface by saying that I read your longest comment but am still taking the time to respond because I agree with much of what you said and enjoyed hearing your viewpoints. Here is a separate response to your question about the statements we referenced in the video about people advocating for Lucy to be gay. In addition to many Twitter posts and Reddit threads in some of the groups I am in here is an article from Pride.com titled “'Fallout' is a wonderfully weird, funny & bold post-apocalyptic tale - but is it queer?” Here is a direct quote from Nolan. “While it would have been wonderful to see one of the leads be queer, Nolan hopes that queer audiences still see themselves represented in the show’s themes, particularly around the way the show explores the ideas of tearing down the current social structures and rebuilding something new, more equitable, and, yes, queer.” Here is another quote from that particular article. “She did, however, reveal that there are queer characters in the show, as well as gender nonconformity, particularly when it comes to the Brotherhood of Steel, but that sadly a more overt moment that touched on two characters’ relationship was cut. “There are bits of it though if you look for it.” That said I don’t believe any community speaks or thinks as a monolith so I can understand how you may not have had the same conversations that we have had. All in all, I really enjoyed your breakdown of the show in your largest comment and am working my way through responding to each of your thoughts in kind but just thought I would set your mind at ease regarding what we were referencing.

@@holdmydualshock I appreciate the response and the reference for the article. I think there are a couple of misunderstandings in how that article is interpreted though. First you should know that we as LGBT people enjoy an enormous amount of hetero centric entertainment. We don't constantly bash things because no LGBT characters are present. And the wish to be included should not be seen as advocating for one of the main characters next season to be gay. We all want to be able to see ourselves in the entertainment we watch it's actually what gave rise to games like the Fallout series in the first place. To that end by the time Skyrim and Fallout 4 arrived we were able to develop relationships without regard to their status as hetero or homo centric. Never the less we realize that we still represent a small minority of the viewing public and have no expectation of being represented in every new piece of IP that goes mainstream. And of course a source like Pride is going to advocate for our inclusion but I don't read those quotes as demanding a main character be gay or become gay in the next season. If it services the plot it would be welcome of course but if it doesn't happen we are plenty used to not be included in what is still a hetero centric world after all. The overwhelming response to the show online has been positive IMO but here and there I do see the odd comment wondering why trans characters or fat characters would still exist in such a world. Which of course fundamentally misunderstands both groups of people. I can only imagine how such comments might have multiplied if those characters would have been displayed more prominently. THAT is a serious societal issue that needs to be addressed and is far beyond the scope of a discussion about Fallout. You are absolutely correct that NO community is a monolith and NO community speaks with one voice. It should also be pointed out that not all who advocate for our community are even a part of our community. Sometimes communities allies can be a case of "with friends like these...." I suppose it seemed like the comments in this video were implying that we as a group were looking for our "pound of flesh" since the show was well received and I don't think that is the case at all.

These people are so toxic that they directly go after the actors because they can't separate the fantasy of an entertainment from the reality that these are real people just doing a job they get paid for to try and entertain. One of the best things done with this whole series was the casting. All of them were selected very well. No. They didn't go too much into fan-service. But as an original Fallout player... I mean top down Isometric, which I do not expect you to understand, they picked wonderful actors to play these rolls. I am happy with how this went. Could it have been better? Yes. But we also could have designed the Voyager probes the explore the sun as well... so lets be real. They did their job, above and beyond what was expected. After nearly thirty years of people like me playing Fallout as a game (yes, that long. Fallout 1 came out in 1997) we finally got a TV adaptation, and not only did it not suck, but it was pretty fucking amazing. So while I could sit here and bitch about semantics and canon and lore... I won't. It was good. They did it justice, and maybe even more than that.

For example Iron Man stop having suits that were a practical effect before Infinity War which is now nearly a decade old. The fact that they built that Power Armor as a practical effect (with some enhancement from CGI) instead of as a motion capture suit is HUGE in this industry. The fact that they filmed scenes outdoors instead of plopping it all on to a soundstage in front of greenscreen is big too. And frankly they had no choice if they were going to continually switch back and forth between the REAL world of the wasteland and the fake one in the vaults.

The show creator said usually the source material people have lists of things that have to be signed off all along the production of the show. Since he got such freedom what do what he wanted he tried really hard to make it a good show. @@holdmydualshock Yup, when translating media from one medium to another, you can never have a 'direct' translation... something always has to change. To streamline things you might have to combine characters, to shorten the story into a 2 hour format you may have to eliminate a lot of internal character dialogue, and just figure out an easier and more time efficient way to relay important information. Some people though, don't understand that. My same friend, when discussing the 'Wheel Of Time' adaptation from Amazon, said he thought it was stupid because 'All the different armor types being worn were all from different time periods and wouldn't have been in use at the same time.... and I pointed out that it was a fantasy world. It wasn't supposed to be our world. We have no idea how the historical production of armor in that world occurred... because it's not real. He couldn't grasp the concept... and for him it ruined the entire show, and he proceeded to ruin everyone else's enjoyment of it as well. I mean, there were valid criticisms of that series... but the use of leather, plate, chain and scale armors at the same time was not one of them. That's a very small detail for it to 'ruin your experience' and make you hate the show.

Vaults 31, 32 and 33 were interconnected. Vault 31 produced overseers for 32 and 33. The experiments inside 32 and 33 were to create a population of highly polite conservative people that had family oriented populations and would reproduce at a predictable rate. LGBTQ would not fit into that spectrum and therefore Lucy could not be gay. If a vault dweller was found to be gay, they would have likely had some unfortunate event happen to them and it would have been swept under the rug by the crazy and corrupted overseers.

Wait, why would Lucy be anything but straight? She was raised underground with the belief that reproduction is her most important duty as a survivor, they covered that in extreme detail in the first episode. I think changing that would require a lot of explanation in her change of values as a person. All of which would be unnecessary for a character that's already done well, while we have plenty of opportunities for representation with other characters that weren't raised and conditioned in a vault for 200 years.

That's not how things work. If raising could completely determine sexual orientation there would be no gays in some cultures. But they exist. So there should be gay and bi vault dwellers. But Lucy seems to be straight. Not because of being raised in a vault, but just because some people are straight.

I think what I loved about Lucy so much was that she's usually the type of character I tend to play in a Fallout game - someone who's kind, wants to help, but that doesn't mean she's a pushover. I loved the scenes with her where I'm like "oooh Lucy's using her Speech check!"

I 100% agree! The formula for success of a show of movie adaptation of a game of book is so easy! Yet so many fail following it, because they prefer to make a political statement no one needs or asked for, instead of creating a good show or movie fans would love and support! And that formula simply is: Respect the freaking source material!

CW's Supergirl was all about accepting people different than you. It's focus was on social diversity. Fallout is more anti- Capitalism /pro-Socialism and portrays the corporations as evil. Which imo is accurate to a degree. Right now we have a govt and legal system that puts fidicuary responsibility above social responsibility. Where bribing lawmakers is legal as long as you jump through a couple of loopholes big enough to drive a Brinks truck through. Where defense contractors and big oil can start wars to facilitate access to resources both natural and human. The military is just muscle for them to pave the way for them make more money for themselves. War is a racket. - Major Gen Smedley Butler. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWir1Lpxoq7aqto.html

I can answer why. Their goal is not to cash out, their goal is to reeducate straight white males, tell them how guilty, privileged and wrong they are. Their goal is to actually kill, rebuild from scratch any lore that doesn't fit woke ideology. Like they literally killed james bond who existed for decades. How they ruined many game, movie, tv-series franchises. That's why disney, hollywood in general is getting huge cash losses. Hopefully capitalism wins woke (rebranded communism) one day and make hollywood great again. Fallout tv series makes me hopeful, that's a move to the right direction at least.

I'm 90% sure the "fool's errand" quote is indeed taken out of context, one of the show runners did say something along the lines of it was foolish to try to incorporate all of the things that made fallout the games great, as there's hundreds of hours of gameplay across all of those games, so they said instead they would rather focus on specific tidbits in order to do those RIGHT by the fans and get them to fit the story. Which is what, should happen in my opinion, otherwise you get things like the Solo movie, where you had all these things thrown at you - this is why there's the line his computer had a funny dialect, this is where his dice came from, this is where his name came from - and it's just one after the other like it's rapid fire and so there's no real way for them to elaborate on those things. Even the fact he won the ship in a game against Lando kinda felt hollow to me because of how many other tidbits they'd thrown at us during the movie. It ended up falling flat in that regard. the Fallout show is great though. you get little bites, little references, but they still fit the plot or what's being said and doesn't seem out of left field.

  • @holdmydualshock

    @holdmydualshock

    Ай бұрын

Yea, that makes a lot of sense. The Lando and solo example really makes sense. I actually paraphrased your argument in another conversation because it was so well put! The show is definitely not in line with that quote as it was being portrayed in many of the articles that came out before the show release. I agree, the show really nailed the balance between references but without going so overboard it's difficult to fit in a good story.

Plus with a game that's as cinematic as TLOU why tf would people want the adaptation to be a 1:1 retelling? Personally, I think it's more compelling for the adaptation to keep the themes and characters, but change up the plot here and there so it's its own thing

When for the first time she takes a weapon, she takes non-lethal option because, well, she was taught to be a good person and didn't knew any better. After all that she lived through, her decision to stick to non-lethal option feels like an honest and well-thought decision - she no longer uses tranquilliser gun because she doesn't know any better, but because she DOES know better and decides to still go with less aggressive and more life-preserving methods. That might sound like "well, that's not much, but IMO, it shows her character development really well.

It's little things that Ella Pernell has brought to the table. Her use of "okey dokey" when it shows up in the script is both subtle and in your face. When playing the game of Fallout, there are seemingly endless moments where the action or conversation freezes and you are given a finite number of choices. Sometimes as a player you stare at the options and wish for other choices. Most of the time tho, among the choices given, you pick the one you feel is right for you, and move forward with that same sense of uncertain confidence. It doesn't always feel 100% ideal, but given the circumstances, it's time to just say okay and move on. Her face. Her Demenor. How she says the phrase. It's like you're there with her in that moment picking that option and moving forward. She's practically looking into the camera when she says it.
