Hilariously enough, The King is one of the better people in the game, unironically. He's reasonable, an animal lover, genuinely wants his part of Vegas to do better, plus he has infinite swag.

I love The King, I always like to imagine that my independent ending involves throwing the might of the robot army behind The King and the Followers to legitimize them and allow them to extend their brand of cooperation and community to all in the Mojave who want it. Which is kinda wild because I never expected to love The Kings this much, when I first met them I was like "haha Elvis impersonators, hope you've got funnier jokes in stock Obsidian"

I've heard people defend the lack of post game by using the "Obsidian only had 2 years" excuse, but apparently Obsidian themselves claimed that it was their idea all along. Either way, it was a mistake. People praise this game endlessly for the amount of different endings you can get, but not having a post game means you don't even get to see the consequences of all those endings with your own eyes. You only get a narrated explanation. It's tell-don't-show story-telling that really doesn't work well in an open-world game. The whole battle for New Vegas/Hoover Dam storyline should have been handled similarly to the Civil War questline from Skyrim anyway. The main quest focused on the Courier's feud with Benny and Ulysses. They were the one's the Courier actually had a score to settle with.

Loved the humor. Top tier. But completely disagree on the ending take away. You can go anywhere in both 3 and NV. The stronger enemies deter you but if you're creative you can get through easy enough- same as if you went into Old Olney at the start of 3 it'd be tough. 3's story is way more linear too.

Yeah I thought that was such a bizarre thing to say. New Vegas even does a great job of handling going to things in weird orders for the most part. Like this latest playthrough I refused to go to Vegas until I had gone everywhere else for a change, and then I never talked to Mr. House until after I had already gone to the Legion Camp and killed Ceasar and used the chip, and it handled all that very well. There was also a ton of extra things directing you to Vegas I never knew about--like all sorts of NPCs giving you hints about Benny's location. Normally I bee-line straight there lol

That's also my experience. New Vegas allow you to go anywhere and do anything but due to connection between locations and quests, it always make it feel like cohesive and planned story. Plus you can decide fate of almost everyone named character in the game. Fallout 3 feels insanely linear in comparison. You can go anywhere-do anything but that experience doesn't offer anything better than New Vegas and feels like disconnected events due to lack of mentioned connections and worse writing all across the board.

Wow. The way you explained how the open world is presented differently in NV vs F3 is super accurate. I personally prefer the way NV was laid out because it’s the antithesis of Bethesda’s awful level scaling, which I suggest is a result of the more open presentation of a Bethesda open world vs the Obsidian one. I trash on the way BGS does it because they gutted skills in favour of a perk driven system with no level cap. I prefer the tighter designed experience Obsidian delivered, the old BGS titles did too. I can’t deny the merits associated with BGS open world design though, I’ve sunk many hours into their games.
