Fallout Director Jonathan Nolan on the Promise and Perils of Our Time

Ойын-сауық

Famed Academy Award and Emmy Award-nominated writer, director, and producer Jonathan Nolan joins PW Director of Sciences Janna Levin to talk about his catalogue of imaginative works, from "Memento" to "The Prestige" to "Westworld" to "The Peripheral." The two discuss collaborating with his brother, the origins of Batman, and more. As Levin notes on Nolan's canon, "You seem naturally infused with a genuine love of science. You’re that rare animal who also finds these dramatic narrative threads and extrapolations from those ideas.”
This project is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, bridging the two cultures of science and the arts.

I was an extra on Westworld in Season 2 and I got to watch Jonathan Nolan direct Ed Harris right in front of me and it is a moment I will never forget.

Interstellar was the best cinematic experience I’ve ever had. I am still sitting in that ship, I am still running from that wave. And the hole, “what is going to happen to me?”, it was that real. Incredible. Seeing it at home can never get near that IMAX screen and sound immersion.

Wow, what a great conversation! Glad to see such a deep thinker at the helm of so many high profile projects. Westworld Season 5 and Peripheral Season 2, please!

AGI will only be possible wgen consciousness will be understood. How we get there? That's a subject for exploration. Most probably through a combination of research and AI

If they're brothers, why does Chris have a British accent and Jon doesn’t?

Apparently when he moved to America he learned an American accent as he found having a British one was unpopular he probably just feels more comfortable with it now

Same reason why I have a North American accent, and my brother is a straight-up Aussie: different geographical upbringing

He is much more talented than his brother, Christopher. I'm sorry to say. Jonathan wrote the scripts and he really was not credited enough by his brother, Chris. Chris Nolan's last 3 films were ppor because Jonathan Nolan is clearly the better writer. I think Jonathan ultimately got fed up with feeding Christopher Nolan's ego that is why you are hearing about him now. About time!

@@drunkdonutboy Maybe they had a falling out. I'm not sure. But Jonathan wrote all the scripts for Chris to direct. His last 3 films have been very poor in my opinion. That's largely because Jonathan is not writing the scripts.

😂 You bunch of geniuses. Apart from Intestellar what film did Jonathan really write majority of the screenplay? Dark Knight trilogy & Memento was co- written.(with Memento a Jonah idea). Inception,Dunkirk,Tenet and Oppenheimer all Chris Nolan.

@Skyreem2020 and funnily enough those were all the ones that weren't as good! He also wrote the prestige and wrote interstellar before Chris butchered it. I think spielberg would've made a better movie if he stayed with the project. I think the prestige was his best work and I think thats largely due to johnathan He was also against bane and kinda just went with it cuz chris convinced him of it

@@drunkdonutboy You telling me Inception wasn't good...apart from the Dark Knight trilogy and Intestellar,no other movies surpasses Inception. Memento & Prestige were fascinating but not as enjoyable as Inception.
