    I carried that knife during the 03' ground invasion of Iraq! My teammate and I both bought one from a small town German knife shop about a week before we deployed. The guy made all kinds of claims of indestructability; even claimed that some special forces unit hammered a bunch A1's into a concrete wall and used them as a makeshift ladder. Never tried to confirm the story but we did similar tests and it wasn’t bull shit!! We did everything possible to break that knife! We used it as everything from a chisel to a MRE opener. We even cut holes in metal folding chairs to make field shitters. Hands down best knife I’ve ever used!I carried that knife during the 03' ground invasion of Iraq! Thanks mate. I purchased an A1 a few weeks ago. I couldn’t be happier with it. Your reviews helped me with the decision. Amazing cutting performance for such a stout blade and the edge retention continues to impress me. Fallkniven really nailed here - has to be one of the best knives in the world for it’s category.

    congratulations. you are the first person I have seen not put the A1 in a vise, pinch it through steel, beat on it with a hammer...and best of all demonstrate that hatchets and axes do exist to chop with.

    I recently watched the destruction test of this knife. It is more than tough enough for anything you would need it for in the wild. I have one and wouldn't be afraid to have it as my only tool in the wild. I think that convex can be easier to sharpen in the wild since you don't really need a flat surface. Even a belt will bring back the edge or use some bark or something. I doubt I would ever destroy the handle since I try to be careful with any tools. Even as a contractor for 35 + years being careful of my tools helped them last and protected me from damage. Protecting myself really was everything so care covers everything. Yes the sheath. Ouch. But like Dutch Bushcraft Knives pointed out you could leave it in mud and water for a year and just wash it off and you are ready to use it. The knife retention tab is pure garbage. I wrapped over the tab with black electrical tape which seems to work but cold weather would destroy it effectiveness. In my bug out bag or pack I carry the A1, a tops BOB in 1095, a Martini and a Victoronix explorer. That is for 3 days and up load out. I can throw in a hatchet.

    Say Heah Again, I had one awesome experience ever with a Knife Company. I noticed the Belt Loop on my A-1 Sheath was Tearing at the corner, I never abused the sheath and I wear it like all my other sheath's without any problems at all. So I decided to send a e-mail to Fallkniven. So I went to their website and where it said Contact Us there's where I was able to send my message. I wasn't rude and I was honest excactly to the point and I sincerely feel this is a defect and nothing that I did wring, I just wear it like any other knife. A few days later I recieved a e-mail back stating They were sending me a replacement, I replied with a Thank You ofcource. But then I remembered the name that was signed by the person replying my e-mail, Yup it was Peter the C.E.O. of Fallkniven, WoW I thought that was awesome. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, I didn't expect a C.E.O to respond and Ka-Bar has great service so does Battle Horse, But I will never buy a Top's Knife ever again, That girl that took care of me was so rude and she made sure the product was worst them what I was making good, Top's is the Worst Company to deal with at their Customer Care. Yet Mr. Peter (because I forgot his last name) replied. I'm in the market to buy another knife, I have a Njord so I might go with a smaller Northern Lights Knife and eventually the Thor, but I defenetly will stick with Fallkniven because tgeir an upstanding cimpany, Top's would of done well with me because this is my passion well atleast one of tgem, But I will not give Top's a second look the way that snotnose girl at their Customer Service.

    Thank you at long last my heart is settled, I became so confused listening to 100 vlogs on knives , in every vlog every knife is batoned, feathersticked, this steel is good then 100 saying not good, blah blah blah, annoying, sometimes people want a knife for serious emergency or personal protection, that’s what interested me in fallkniven , s1 or a1, aesthetics are only secondary to quality and serious strength, thank you for a true honest review, and showing us the micro bevel, I could see it well, your sharpening advise Wass clear and precise, thank you for this vlog

    Say Heah Sean, I took the Fallkniven A-1 last weekend. The whole reason behind it was to pair it with another knife and still use it as a one tool option, sounds strange, lemme explain, I didn't want to just pair it with a smaller knife like the F-1 a logical choice but then it would be more like a 2knife carry and then I would rather go with a larger knife and then a smaller knife like my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 or my new set tge Steel Heart Ergo and the Badger Attack Ergo. So we went out just for that reason, and I found one. I paired my A-1 with my Cold Steel Mini Pendleton not the Hunter but the Solid VG-1 and 3" blade. This way I still feel like I'm using a one tool option and still have a back-up for finer work, I did that with the Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Potbelly and the Top's Mini Scandi 2.5. Yeah, the A-1 is a awesome knife. I also had a Rodent 6 Modified I had it thinned down and the top gaurd taken off. The reason was it's still very similar size to the A-1 and tge way I like using that size, batoning and chopping are two important functions I look for a knife in this size. But also the SR101 is more forgiving if I hit the grind and yet it too is easy to sharpen.I also had a High Saber Grind that I was able to put a slight Convex on it and Yeah it rocks. This weekend the guys and I are going out again and I'm bringing my Himalayan Imports M-43 and my Bokor Magnum Series Vox 2011 Collection Knife and my vintage Myerchin Slipjoint Pocket Knife with the Marlin Spike also in 440c. Should be a interesting weekend to see how well this set will preform as a survival set or just living in the bush. But Yeah, I really like my A-1.

    Say Heah B B, They say third time is a charm, I finally contacted Bokor again, The replace not sheath was over heated but atleast held the knife tighter, but then the Tec-Loc the holes didn't line up, Jan at Bokor is a real nice lady, There wasn't any problem getting another sheat, this time I asked to send it complete since I had a real hard time trying to put that other Tec-Loc on. I got the sheath in four days, I talked to Jan on a Thursday, and by Monday I had a new sheath put together. The new sheath, the Tec-Loc is at a 45° angle. For me it's alright because I like to wear my belt knife cross carry, The sheath appears to be a little better quality and the knife stays in the sheath much better and no rattle. Patients is a Virtue.

    Fantastic vid brother - thanks! I love this blade, though wish it were a bit thinner & I really wish they would go with a micarta or G10 set of scales. That handle material they use just seems so cheap to me...& I agree with you on removing the nub. Lastly, I understand that their layered steels are successful, but I'd rather just have this same blade shape in a thinner stocked single steel, like a CPM stainless, Elmax, or even a 3V or CruForge V....maybe that's a dumb comment/want, but it's just what I'm more accustomed to.

    Say Heah, Yeah, The A-1 is one of my Fav's, Tough as nails, But one reason the edge chip is because a hard steel is brittle, As far as stainless as a knife blade. It depends on the Steel, I live my Stromengs in the smaller ones, My KS 9 is Carbon, But my KS 5 and my Bhuku LiL STAK are in the 12c27 Sandvik Stainless, I found out that they make Ice Skate Blades out of it, and Mora uses it on their stainless knives, If properly tempered alot of guy's say it's every bit as good as the carbon blades, and I agree, My Bhuku is very Lite and hold's a great edge like there's no mannyanna. Yeah, I don't hesitate buying a stairs knife if it's made out of the 12c27 Sandvik Stainless Steel, and ofcource a reputable maker because tempering is important. But yeah, my Bhuku is defenetly a keeper, Very similar to a Mora but a little wider at 15/16th's but it's thin .09" it's a sharpy. ,,, ,,, ,,,

  • @FearNoSteel

    @FearNoSteel

    8 жыл бұрын

    12c27 is awesome, very underrated and misunderstood. it's not just the hardness that makes it brittle it's a little more complex the structure and size of the carbides and grain play a huge role. Also how the alloying elements interact and at what temp is another curiousity unfortunately this is beyond my understanding currently.

  • @paulie4x1

    @paulie4x1

    8 жыл бұрын

    But I think we both have the gist. I don't need to understand it anymore, But I understand what my hockey skates went through, or when I use a stainless steel knife, I'm satisfied with its preformance. I've used some mediocre stainless steel, like 440a,1.4116 etc. That I was very happy with, and yet I've used 440c. stainless that didn't hold as good of an edge, I'm sure the same happens with carbon blades also, I see some of my friends use certain manufactor's 1095 work excellently and others use supposedly better steel that wasn't as good. But I do know, my Fav's is 52100 by a good maker and I have no problem buying a 440c. by a reputable maker and I have pretty good fesults. That's why when I found out the little bit of information on the 12c27 Sandvik Stainless I didn't hesitate to use it, I'm very happy with my Stromeng Bhuku, yet some friends have some Schrades in stainless that don't hold an edge as well, Yeah, your right, too many variables, Nice talking to you, , ,

    There's alot of difference between the San Mai 3 S.R.K. and the A-1, first the steel, Fallkniven uses a VG-10 core and the S.R.K. is made with a VG-1 core different priced steel, and the tang on the A-10 is almost the full size of the handle where the S.R.K. is not, the A-1 is way more robust, I bought my S.R.K thinking it would look like my CarbonV S.R.K but not even ckose, the tip is so thin and the grind is a Hollow grind that as far as I'm concerned is put to shame by my carbonV S.R.K. As a slicer it might be OK. But there's no way the Seal's would use it in their training like they did with the carbonV version, thank goodness the Recon Tanto came out much better but had I know the S.R.K. was like it is, I would of never bought it.

    Yes Cedric, I seen that video. All I'm saying is, even a custom can break, They are man made, You my friend got a fluke, every once in a while I hear it happens. I've seen a few failures with some CarbonV Cold Steel Recon Scout's and Trailmaster's, Yet I've been using my Recon Scout and hard sometimes and I MIT add, Mine has never gave me an idea that it was going to snap or brake in anyway. I've been using it for years now. I also have another one that's virgin and a safe queen as a collector knife, It even has the red warning tape on it. I also don't have any batoning problems with my Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Potbelly, I use it hard too in a one tool option with just a Top's Mini Scandi 2.5 and it's holding up great. I got it because sometime my BK-2 seems a little too short. The Potbelly is a 7 1/2" blade and a very solid made knife, Yet Tactical broke his batoning. Go figure. I really don't think mine will ever break, it's as solid as they come. So what I'm suggesting, Be firgiving, Bokor is a fine company, many customs have broke, check out some Foruns. Yeah, be firgiving, the D2 Steel is a pretty good steel as far as edge retention, but a little harder to sharpen, but not bad, and just use it with confidence after all it is a good knife, I also have a Bokor Magnum Series Vox Collection 2011 a beautuful retro style in the R 440c stainless, I grew up on 440c. it use to be top of the line stainless. And if properly tempered, it still is very good, take a look at some vintage Puma ' s too, their very sought after knives. Anyhow I shared alot with you. Give your Rold another chance, It's a good knife.

    This knife isn't good as a survival knife for two reasons: 1. Tip is weak 2. The edge is almost impossible to properly sharpen in the wild.

    THe SRK isn't the same knife.... Sure cold steel tried to copy the design of the A1 (yep) but it stops there: The A1 is convex ground, the SRK is hollow ground. Steels are different, the A1's is better. Blade geometry isn't totally identical : A1's is stronger (especially in the tip area) . A1 is full tang , SRK is a rat tang. In short: the SRK is a cheap knock off, period.

    The SRK was first. if you look into the history of Fallkniven, they were a dealer for Cold Steel before they where a company. they liked alot of the Cold Steel designs and built there A1 to be a Improvement on the SRK design.

    +Big Brown I've just checked this, and you're right. I'm so used to Cold Steel stealing ("taking inspiration from") designs here and there that I naturally assumed it was the case for the A1 and SRK. Still, I feel the student surpassed the master in the case of these 2 knives.

    +Joshua Smith nah, its still a convex grind which differs from a convex edge.

    Semantics my friend, a saber grind has a secondary bevel as the primary cutting edge, a scandi is the same but with no secondary bevel (zero grind) an is usually flat grinded. A convex grind blends the the primary cutting edge into the grind into an "apple seed" shape. The Japanese term and style for this is hamaguri or "clamshell" grind The convex grind has the strength of a saber and the cutting performance of a scandi The drawback being it takes longer an more detail to sharpen properly.

    I own both the A1 and the SRK in San Mai and the Cold steel is the worst knife I have ever purchased. Really bad quality and can't even stack up to the S1(Fallkniven) nevermind the A1.
