Falling in Love Makes You WEAK…apparently…

Фильм және анимация

“Love makes you weak and we don’t need men” seems to be the message that Hollywood is sending to female audiences nowadays. Hollywood and part of recent culture (fortunately not most of it, but enough of it) have come to the opinion that girls/women in movies should no longer pursue love or traditional femininity. Something something…girl power…something something patriarchy…I guess?
In any case, this has been bugging me for a while, and with a certain live action Snow White movie attempting to exist amongst controversy, I figured this was the best time to share my thoughts.

And DON'T get me started on how a faction of Hollywood is also putting down being a mother/parent. Like??? They are so important to society! Of course not everyone is cut out to be a parent, and it's okay if not everyone is, but wanting to be one is great! Having children is a blessing! Being a parent is wonderful and honorable! The push against it in media is annoying 😤 Shoutout to all of the fantastic mothers and fathers in shows/movies/books/games!✨🙌

True. I feel like a lot of films make the rebellious child right and the traditional parent wrong without any nuance or "they're both kinda right" perspective--plus dads (especially stay at home dads) in the media are usually shown to have poor emotional intelligence and lacking responsible traits. It's too bad.

It sucks, as this viewpoint affects both male and female characters, invalidating kindness, shyness, and passive traits while idolizing rebellion, pessimism and aggression. The fact that Hollywood sees genuine romance as cheesy, outdated, or simply not sexy enough for a mainstream audience is disenheartening.

I agree with you! I'm kind of on both sides since I don't like how outdated the old movie was, but only for the reason that Snow white was 14-15 and has sort of a childlike innocent personality. Like, they could still make her a gentle and kind sweetheart (like they did for the live action Cinderella) but just age her up at least 5-6 years. They don't have to make her a tough girlboss rebel

In any case, that situation is different from some other relationship situations all around the world. I particularly like Lottie from Disney's Princess and the Frog, she only has her father and is spoiled by him, but she's not bad, on the contrary, she is sweet and helpful to Tiana even though she is poor and black and even helps her directly and with respect, just like her father always treated Tiana and her mother with respect. With her chic pink clothes and exaggerated manner you would expect her to be superficial, but she is not, she likes what she has and wants to fulfill her childhood dream of having a prince, but leave that aside so that Tiana can be happy, and even before she showed that she already wanted her friend's dream to come true, but since Tiana did everything herself Lottie probably didn't feel she needed to intervene, but she hired Tiana and gave her the money she needed and was visibly happy, and when she saw Tiana lying on the floor and dirty at the party, she stopped what she was doing to help her and even give her a dress. Lottie is amazing.

Another small detail I like with Lottie is a quote she says when she believes her "prince" isn't coming: "I never get anything I wish for" Now, one might think that she's being a spoiled brat with that line, but it's one of those moments where the wording matters. She doesn't say "I never get anything I *ask* for" - she could get nearly anything she asks for - instead she says "I never get anything I *wish* for". She wishes to find her Prince Charming, one who would love her till death, and money won't give her that. Yes, Lottie is spoiled, but she isn't rotten. She was even willing to let go of her dream for a bit so Tiana could be happy with Naveen, seeing that the two loved each other.

Both Tiana and Charlotte deserve more love in my opinion... and this is coming form someone who hates most of the classic/2D Disney princess movies. Tiana mostly only gets love for being the only black Disney princess (which is going to change on November 22 because of Wish) and doesn't get as much love for actually having an incredible personality. I mean, I don't like how they made her end up with Neveen because I thought he was a jerk and Tiana had other goals, but at least Tiana could be a hard worker but still dress up and look pretty. Like, her goal was to own her own restaurant and feed everyone in the city, but she could also embrace her feminine side and look pretty too. Charlotte was also one of a kind, and not the stereotypic "mean girl" you'd think of her to be. Like, even though she was rich and kind of spoiled, she still supported Tiana at all costs. On top of that, she has the stereotypic "mean blonde popular chick" look to her, but didn't act mean or spoiled at all.

I've never liked the idea that's being pushed that "girls don't want girly girls as role models." If that were the case, why are brands such as Barbie and the Disney Princess franchise so overwhelmingly popular? Not to mention, growing up with two sisters, we ALL wanted to play as Princess Peach when she was a playable character. I love girly girls and appreciate media that celebrates all types of girls, and all the different ways to be a girl. I'd love to see more media that doesn't shy away from girls that ARE girly. Who love pink and purple, cute clothes, accessories, and ribbons. It's why I love the magical girl genre and its unabashed girliness.

@@TheArtisticAloubellthe irony with all the complaining about girly girls, damsels, liking magic and fantasy, and comparing about how Disney princesses, barbie, monster high, bratz, etc will make your kids want to dress inappropriately and be "anorexic" is they never complain about boys stuff being a bad influence on children. For all the "Cinderella/Aurora/SW is a damsel and is wrong for wanting a boyfriend" you never see whining about how the PRINCES actually do less. Florian, Charming, and Philip do a lot less in the story and unlike Aurora who's "damsel" status is reserved to the first like 5 minutes because when the fairies change the spell to a coma and not death she is in no danger, the prince is the one to actually get kidnapped. And for the interests, nobody has a problem with He Man. Nobody seems to think He Man will make boys want to become bodybuilders, and for all the "this female character has clothing that's too revealing" there's nobody talking about how He Man literally wears nothing but underwear and a metal strap. But all the whining is on if a female wears a miniskirt or bares her midriff. Which is much more clothes than He Man ever had. Or GI Joe which is literally just war propaganda packaged into an action cartoon.

“Being in love doesn't make you weak or dependent. Staring at the night sky together, holding hands, looking into each other's eyes gives you wings. It fills your heart and body with energy to accomplish everything else.”-some dude on the internet. It takes strength to show vulnerability with someone you love. And it saddens me how they turn something so positive into something pervertedly horrible. Love also creates life. That’s the main reason we exist. Saying “love makes you weak” sounds like something a villain would say. Maleficent believed that, Ursula believed that, evil queen believed that, Voldemort believed that and look where they are now. Dead, while the power of love saved the protagonists. As cheesy as that sounds. And she said the prince was a “stalker”. First of all, I don’t recall introducing yourself to be anything “stalkerish”. He didn’t spy on her, he didn’t wait for her outside her tower, and when she got frightened and ran away, he didn’t chase after her or grabbed her. And searching for a missing person isn’t considered “stalking” either. Second of all, the villain of this story was a WOMAN and SHE was the stalker. She tracked down a young girl just so that she could kill her because she wants to be the pretty one. If anything, Snow White was the weird one in the relationship with the prince. She fell in love with the prince she just met; and how lucky is she that the feeling was mutual.

I once came up with idea for a story for a remake of Snow White by focusing more on the relationship between Snow White and the seven dwarves. Doc being the oldest is the leader of the group and as well as being the smartest is in charge with selling the gems at the market and finding new locations to mine. Grumpy is the second oldest and is constantly at odds with Doc. Unlike Doc who is more reasonable and open minded, Grumpy is more closed minded and was really against Snow White living with them. However, his actions are not done out of malice but rather as him being protective of the other dwarves and will grow to accept Snow White. Sleepy is the most hard working of the dwarves almost to a fault. He would often stay in the mines overnight in order to meet quotas and is prone to passing out due to over excursion. Sneezy was once the best miner of the group, but after surviving a cave in he developed breathing problems that cause him to enter a nasty sneezing and coughing fit. As a result, he can't work as hard as he used to, and feels guilty that he is the reason that Sleepy has to work so hard. Bashful is loner who doesn't really like interacting with the other unless it was necessary. He liked to spend his time wondering in nature gather and hunting while also cutting and polishing the gems they mined. Happy is often the peacemaker of the group who often tried to resolve and problem the other might have even if it means having to carry the sorrows of others in his heart. Before Snow White came he was the one in charge with house work and cooking. Dopey is the youngest of the group and as such tries really hard to help the group while also find his calling in life. As for Snow White I want to show Snow White and the 7 Dwarves help and change each other throughout the story and how they all grow as people. The dwarves even give her the name "Lovely" because to them she was one of the dwarves.

It is really sad to see, that the old feminine tropes I used to adore are going down the toilet, because Hollywood belives, that everyone is a female boss girl, then they can push political agendas from left and right. Not want to sound controversal, Aloubell. But I REALLY appreciated that you made this video up. And as a boy, I have a confession to make. I have happened to see most of the cartoons and animes, where female characters are more natural. I mean, as someone who hates the original movie, I can't show "respect" for it knowing that it was a product of its time and in 1937, a 14-15 year old falling in love with a 35 year old was legal and it was okay for the dwarves to be seen as comic reliefs because they were "funny looking" by their standards. However, I still think Rachel seems like a b*tch and doesn't deserve the role at all. My biggest complaint is that she doesn't look or sound like Snow white or give off the gentle, soft girl vibes that Snow white gives off. I think Chloe Moretz would make a way better Snow White (since she looks more like Snow white and also voiced Snow White in Red Shoes). I mostly just would like to see them age Snow white up to be an adult instead of having that creepy age gap

@@gabidobre5584 I mean, I agree with you that Halle has more class but I also agree with what Rachel says about the original movies, and I don't like the old 2D Snow White nor Little Mermaid. I just think Rachel took things a bit too far and acts like a spoiled brat. Even though I do agree that the old movie was weird and creepy, but that's because I only watched it once when I was like 13 or 14 and my grandma and I didn't really care for it (My grandma used to enjoy it but after rewatching it she had different thoughts) and I grew up watching a lot of 2000s cartoons, unlike people who might have more nostalgia for it. Like, I'm usually the first person to point out what's wrong with the older Disney movies, but then again, I agree that Rachel doesn't fit the role as Snow White. I think Halle Bailey definitely deserved the role for the Little Mermaid though. Also, another thing is that these stories were hundreds of years old even before Disney bought them and animated them. Like, Snow white and Little Mermaid are both fairytales and the live action Little Mermaid was more like an adaptation of the fairytale than copying the stupid cartoon Disney version. They also did that for Cinderella too. They could do the same for Snow White, maybe just fix the huge age gap between her and the prince and maybe give the dwarves more personality? But no, they're not gonna take my advice!

💝👑HUGE kudos to you for making this video celebrating the types of characters that often get overlooked! Honestly, all kinds of female characters are valid! The tougher ones, the softer ones, the independent ones, the ones who rely on others, all of them! Just like all kinds of colorful personalities exist in real life, we should also embrace those different personalities in fiction, because everyone should have at least one character that they can relate to and see themselves in! And romance is also totally valid if that's what the character wants. ☺ P.S: Another great example that I can think of is Belle from the 1992 Beauty and the Beast! Despite being "not like other girls", Belle is undeniably super graceful and feminine, she has no interest in fighting nor her being different feels forced, not to mention she's undoubtedly a romantic at heart! But she's still very much a well-rounded and independent character, and also a really strong one, but more in an "emotional strenght" kind of way, thanks to her bravery and compassion. Also, her and the Beast pretty much save each other, just in different ways. Honestly, characters like Belle and Twilight Sparkle are some of my favorites in fiction, and some of the ones I relate to the most. Would not mind to see more girls like them. >w

While it's obviously a great thing to teach young girls (or any kid for that matter) to look out for themselves, there really is no shame in relying on other people either, regardless of their gender! Woman should not by any means feel weak or less capable just because they're getting help from a man, or viceversa. We're all human at the end of the day. And helping each other out can and should be seen as something natural that makes us better and stronger.

Honestly there’s nothing wrong for being girly girly. I may not be athletic or “girl boss” sometimes but I enjoyed things like baking or drawing besides playing video games (Still excited for that Princess Peach Showtime). I still love the original Snow White movie and other Disney classics I enjoyed since I was a little girl. Heck, I even used to play Barbie and watch the CGI movies when I was little! I sometimes relate to Fluttershy like I don’t like presenting or making speeches in front of people as I get too nervous. But I like focusing on other things I like. Even though I’m not interested in getting into a romantic relationship for now, I still enjoyed some romantic scenes in tv shows or movies. Take Rapunzel for example, sure she can defend herself and she had a dream but she slowly started to fall in love with Flynn throughout the movie and their dynamic works. I’m no expert at writing but if you want to make a strong independent woman at least make the character have flaws and overcome trials, it worked with Mulan in the original animated movie and there’s nothing wrong being kind because it makes you being empathetic to others and people can be kind to others too if you show them. You should check out the 2015 Cinderella movie, they handle Cinderella really good or check out this animated show called Winx Club (recommended watching season 1 to 3). So thank you Aloubell for making this video and this is what I need to hear. ❤️

To be honest, there is nothing wrong with a man helping a woman, and for a woman to be strong is great and for her to fall in love is super natural. With the damsels in distress thing, I can see one of those examples and the one that catches my attention the most is in Princess Peach. In most games she is the damsel in distress who, although she fulfills her duties, there are times in games where even when she can do something she does nothing like Super Mario Odyssey. Although in the movie they made her an independent and feisty woman, there are some who complained that she was a mary sue in the movie, but to be honest Peach had a strong character in some moments in the spin-offs including Super Princess Peach. What do you think about that Aloe about the film version of Peach? Postscript: I liked your drawing of Kim and nice video.❤❤❤

Namine from Kingdom Hearts (: She starts as a damsel in distress, forced to do awful things to Sora and his friends with her power over memories, but once set free, is crucial in the stopping the progression of the villain's plan before it can be completed. She uses her powers for good in later games, healing Sora's memory, communicating with Roxas and Xion about important information, and saving Kairi (another damsel in distress, but not done as well as Namine) All the main Kingdom Hearts girls are written very well to not let their "girl bossing" be their only trait. Xion has a timid and feminine air to her, and also fights against the organization she was a part of when it comes down to doing what she thinks is right. Aqua has a very motherly personality, always looking out for her friends Ventus and Terra (and also enjoys baking if you read the novel) and she also becomes a keyblade master and has a very elegant fighting style :) As for Kairi... I don't personally like her, but I'm sure others do. She has good things going for her, feeling love for Sora and having a quirky and fun personality. She gets kidnapped all the time, and her involvement in Kingdom Hearts 3 wasn't great.

Here’s the thing imo: if a woman character is ONLY pink and pretty and likes shopping and boys, then there’s a problem. She’s just a stereotype. And most often, she’s just there as a joke making fun of women in the narrative or she’s a s*xual object for the man in the media. If her only personality traits are “girl” and “heterosexual” then she’s a bad character. The cure is giving her a strong personality, depth, agency in her media, things to do. Have her show that that’s not all she is and that’s not what she has to be. Don’t have her tear any other women down and don’t have them tear her down. Give her male friends and hobbies and family she cares about and aspirations to reach. That’s the fix. Make her a CHARACTER and not just “girl”

And then him of course becoming a "The One" with the whole monkey kung fu arc. Kim wasn't the smartest. If anything she was the black sheep of a family of hyper geniuses. There also always plenty of Aesops for her when her hollywood vanity kicked in depending on the episode. The show also didn't put down its male characters in spite of itself. 92% of Kim's villains were male and kind of morons but they were still entertaining and interesting in their own ways. They even highlight Senor Senior Jr. but showing he's not an overly muscular vanity project when he tries. It was just a solid show all around for characters both men and women

Hands down one of my biggest pet peeves with media analysis today. As with most things that started as wrong there's been a bit of an overcorrection. Unquestionably films used to be romance happy to the point where seeing the opposite painted in a good light was rare for women, but instead of the good move of just showing people being happy single, this was not deemed enough. We must demonize romance! Trash talk it at every turn! As if this isn't another version of the exact same thing we sought to destroy? It's not falling in love and this being a woman's happy ending that was ever the problem! It was the overreliance on it, it was not giving off the sense female characters had a choice in the matter. But now, we don't have the choice to choose romance without this being cast in a negative light. The fact that people don't see this hypocrisy grates on me on a regular basis. As well, this puts forward the idea you have to choose between love and feminism which is the smelliest pile of dogshit reasoning. A good man would never make you choose, people just don't know what healthy relationships look like and take that to mean romance/love = bad. Here's another thing that's shitty: Romance is a motivator of a lot of male characters too! But do we have this discussion nearly as much criticizing them? No, it's understandable when a man wants intimacy, but women aren't allowed to want this. This drives me up a wall I swear. Incredibly necessary video.

I'll preface by saying while I am /capable/ of having an interest in men, I do have a very strong sapphic preference, so while straight romances are totally fine and I can get on board and relate, I definitely get quite excited when I see wlw or even girls who are entirely uninterested in the prospect. I will also preface I've never been much of a "girly girl" and don't tend to resonate very strongly with them or take much interest in those characters (though I have nothing against them!). Now. The push I see especially in Marvel and Disney's remakes of making the girls cardboard cut-outs with no personalities other than "stronk" and "faint scowl" or "no expression" who are perfect at everything and have all of their bases covered and "don't need no man" while the story around them undercuts all the men seriously rub me the wrong way. How am I supposed to relate to this? No person is perfect and has all their bases covered. We have flaws, varied interests, most have to work hard for what they want. And feminism is /not/ cutting other genders down. I think my favorite women characters have been Tiana from Princess and the Frog, Mulan from the animated titular movie, Ripley from the Aliens movies, Megara from Hercules, Caitlyn and Mel from Arcane, etc. I love that these women are capable, have flaws, show emotions, struggle, and yeah! A lot of them fall in love! Sold! These are people I can look up to! I also appreciate Cinderella (the animated one again) for the quiet strength she displays.

The main 2 Problems with Live actions these days : 1 : Always race swapping : Why must the character be black or whatever race I am for me even remotely relate to them? It was just yesterday that my friends and a few other students we were having a conversation about how parents are lol, mind you we were all from different countries to, There was me who is Ghanaian, 2 others who were Nigerian and then 2 others who were Indian. But we were able to go on and on about it. Relating to so many things, it has nothing to do with whatever country we came from, or whatever our skin color is for me to constantly always say EXACTLY to every word they said, or Literally or SAMEEE. There isn't a need to do anything because the reason people loved that character is cause she was relatable. Simple 2 : Woke Feminism : Another example, My friend and I were in class just today talking about how we just wanna finish school and everything after uni and all that and then get Married, And my friend even said it herself that she wants to be a Mother. I wanna be a woman who has her own money but I also wouldn't mind being swept off my feet. Nor is My friend. The point is that even young girls like us dream about these type of stuff. Calling a Woman weak for wanting to be a mOther and just live a comfortable life, is just..Idk even know what to say. Just shitty. Mother Hood is definitely a beautiful thing. And a Woman not minding cooking and cleaning is just out of the purity of her heart. Which personally to me is a big strength too. Kindness, Generosity, patience, Why is it such a taboo for woke feminists? Why is it considered weak? So wait me handling things in a Mature and Patient manner is weak? Me being Patient and kind enough to do some chores for my husband is suddenly weak? Oh but you shouting and screaming at the top of your lungs and acting like your better is suddenly strong. You know in that regard das why you got no friends. Thats why you still single, you're so salty that you say you want men to dIEEEE. I absolutely understand feminism on the other hand, like the reasonable ones. We don't wanna be superior to men. We just want equal Opportunities. Equal right, and to stop being treated like assets to our families, aN Asset that can traded for a lot of money. At that point in time that was dehumanizing women. I too, although I wouldn't mind getting married, but I too wanna have a full time job and be a Career woman, BUT it doesn't mean I feel inferior to men, nor do I want them gone. Now les get to the Snow White Talk. I'll say it again. Snow White Personally wasn't my favorite Disney Princess. But she was a classic. And we all love classics no matter. But the point is, The way their saying that Snow White is weak is just wow. Like imagine a 13-14-15 year old girl who has never been outside of the castle walls and she's been sheltered, but also abused by her Step Mother not knowing anything about Survival, Miss Girl survived in the Wild?By Luck, Sure Maybe, But this shows that she has the basic human survival instinct at the very least. And das strength enough. I personally can't survive one day like she did. Moment I run into the forest I'm dead. Snow White teaches people to be kind and patient and then good things would come to you. She didn't have to be strong. And that goes the same for Cinderella, and all others. So really Rachelle Zeggler's whole statement on Snow White is just soooo obnoxious and arrogant.

I don’t think it’s an issue being a “girly girl” depending on the character’s story. But the issue for me is that girls are always saved by men and always fall in love with them without any explanation. I like to say Love is an action rather then feeling because you do things you like and value (spending time together, hugging each others etc). You have to show that you love them rather then just being timid around them. I think the characters you mentioned on your video are really good because it shows that these characters can do things on their own. At least they’re a good balance between girl girl and tough girl. I would like to add that my favorite female from the 2000s are Mulan, Fiona, Sam (Totally Spies), and Lorelai Gilmore (even though she’s not a cartoon but she sets up a pretty good example of how a badass mom and she has good flaws). They’re like my role models.

I know people have said this before so I'll say it with them, just because a girl falls in love does NOT make them weak. I like to see strong and independent girls but to the point of them being girlbosses and emotionless? No. Just no. I sort of view myself as a tomboy but even I like seeing romance once in a while and reading about them. I don't view myself ever, and I mean EVER being in a relationship(thought of it makes me wanna cringe) but seeing other people fall in love is something I don't mind. This is somewhat unrelated but most of my stories that I made all have female leads that are all badass and cool, but they still have personalities. They have struggles, emotional moments, they like dressing up and looking pretty, and, this is half of my OCs, they fall in love. One female character of mine has a bad childhood and desperately wants to break free from the chains and get revenge. Because of that, she became cold and distant to others. BUT just because she want freedom, independence, and revenge, does not mean she's heartless. She's caring, kind, loyal but also hot-headed, a bit brash, and gets a bit too clouded by their trauma she doesn't properly see the pain of others. And as she grows throughout her story, she opens up more to others, adventurous, and likes expressing what she loves to her friends. Not only that, she FALLS IN LOVE, albeit it's a slowburn but still. Why I added it is because I wanted to and it helps with her growth so don't judge me. I am still a minor but what I have done is probably 10x better than what strong female characters are nowadays. My character is strong, but human. With all of this drama Rachel is causong, her hate is justified because girls don't have to be a badass girlboss to be good nor falling in love is weak. I grew up with watching the classic Disney movies, all the Disney princesses I've seen are all strong in their own way. I know I may have been a bit too off-topic with talking about my characters but that proves that female characters can be strong AND have normal female interests.

I have created stories with female characters. One of them is Izzy (Isabelle at the beginning) a 14 year old princess who develops a crush on a merman name Finn. Even though she afraid of sea, she’s curious about him.Izzy find out she must marriage a vain prince and ran away. A sea witch gave her a potion to turn her into a mermaid for a week, to make marry her merman or she’ll forget everything about her time in the water. When Izzy and Finn meet, they have a sweet friendship as he shows her the world underwater. She grows to love the ocean as well as the him. This is a little summary of my story, but I want to share that Izzy is sweet and needs help as well as standing up for herself

I don't post my fanfics or ideas but I have many ideas and stories with girly girls. Even if there are also tomboys I usually will have girly girls too to balance it. Here are some examples of diverse friend groups I have: Aurora Borealis and Company: A series about a band from Finland, which features several girly girls: Marja-Liisa Lahti, one of the band members. She loves pink and fangirls over cute British men. Gia Lombardi, one of the band's friends, is a femme fatale from Italy who loves fashion, are the two most notable examples. Popugirls (bad name I know) is a diverse series in both ethnicity and female characteristics. There's the femme fatales (Cassandra Harold and Inga Halstrom), there's the stereotypical damsel in distress (Rita Connway), there are the girly girls (Bessy Vanderwall, Beatrice Park, Gloria Findley, Margaret Ruoho, Tegan Torrows, and Tammy Panganiban), tomboy (Gladys Findley), and ones that are a blend of tropes (such as Mirna Kane, Darcy Raven, Kjersti Weinsdotter). Perhaps the best example of a female character in this series is Patricia Hannington. She is a British punk who looks tough and mean, and has a heavy Northern accent, as well as having a band literally called Chains of Fury, but she's more than just a "tough independent woman". She also gets in danger occasionally and several men show interest in her, even though she looks like the type to kick you in the face or snarl at you. She still does like dresses, even one of her "punk" outfits is more feminine, as it's purple and has a miniskirt, and she has a boyfriend (who ironically looks more "soft" than her to reverse the roles). And some individual characters and OCs for fandoms: Ducktales OC: Lorelai Birdgess, an Australian woman who is very much your stereotypical Aussie, you know, the Crocodile Dundee type. Despite her badassery and not looking very girly on the surface (she wears pants and a tank top as her main outfit, and she has dyed hair), she is also "feminine". She has a crush on Scrooge, she sometimes needs rescuing, and she is absolutely willing to wear dresses if she needs to. Carmen Sandiego OC: The Duchess (Marina Tang), a Singaporean femme fatale who manipulates men for her own benefit. Despite her mainndraw being her beauty, she isn't weak and can usually get herself out of a sticky situation, and while she's generally independent (she normally works for herself and will do things mainly for her own benefit), she will accept help if she needs it and does often join with Carmen's group to stop VILE, and most of the times Marina flirts with a guy, it's the male VILE agents, which often leads ro their defeat and undoing. Overwatch OC: Harmony. She's quite badass, and is a typical tsundere, but inside she's actually softer and more emotional than what she shows. She also design wise is a blend of feminine and badass, as she wears a skintight outfit with a large and low cleavage window and long hair, which gives the idea of her being a fenme fatale, but her outfit is blue rather than the stereotypical pink or purple or even red, and she has an eyepatch and doesn't wear a lot of makeup. I specifically designed her like that to show that she can be badass while also being a pretty face and having a nice body. Having an attractive appearance doesn't make a woman any less valid and dressing or looking pretty or revealing doesn't make you a bimbo or weak or slutty. All women are valid and true feminists wouldn't attack women who aren't full girlbosses.

This video was done very well! I knew I would like this and the characters you mentioned work with the damsel in distress role pretty well with who I originally thought of on this topic. I know it’s perfectly ok to be girly. I mean I don’t ever get to be fully girly even though I am a girl, but maybe that has to do with my daily life and not feeling like I can with how I look so I don’t get to be the damsel or a girly girl. I enjoy tasteful girly characters. Princess Peach is getting a game and has gotten one game herself before which I think is wonderful and I enjoy the personality they gave her in the newer games as well as with Zelda and her character. Flutter shy from MLP is wonderful and is one of my favorite soft girl characters who also can throw down when she needs too with her stare but shows kindness and bravery every once in a while. I also enjoy Rarity for her generous nature as well as her drama queen attitude because who doesn’t love that! Katara from Avatar the last air bender to me is also a strong character who wants love and is the motherly character and may not be all about make up, but is seen a lot with either Aang or even shipped with Zuko by the show itself, I see a lot of flack on her in the ATLA community and you are gonna need some sort of figure like that to hold the team together which she does wonderfully. And of course Elle freaking Woods. The most pink girly character to me that is my better Barbie. She starts out the movie expecting to be married but ends up being dumped. She then spends half the movie going to law school to get him back, but then realizes she enjoys helping others and got a freaking 179 on her test, like to me that’s a girl boss moment. “Like it was hard?” She had quoted to Warner at the “costume party”. She got a higher score that Warner. 180 is the highest you can get. She is perfectly girly, but uses her smarts to the best degree. Also I believe Gisele from Enchanted to me is also a girly girl who is a damsel in the beginning but comes into her own thoughts and desires a man without it seeming forced or what she is supposed to do because she is well a girl. She also is a killer at making dresses and turns that passion into a business. To me at least some of these characters are great damsels as well as come into their own and still embrace their feminine traits or are just girl bosses but in a tasteful way. One tasteful girl boss to me that is realistic is Tiana from the Princess and the frog. She worked hard every single day and still ended up getting a lover, who honestly knew she could handle herself without him, but they learned to grow together. He needed more structure and she needed to have fun, and she still wears dresses and is a hard business woman who got her dream and a lover in the end! That’s my perfect girl boss. Being a girly girl as well as showing you can do it well but could still be in love too. I think we were in an age at least in the 2000s and before to my recall of men always having a damsel to save and woman never really being girlbosses. We just need a good middle ground in Hollywood. But then we went in an age where all woman characters are thought to now be a super strong girl boss type character. We can have amazing strong female leads to do their work everyday and come out on top and don’t need anyone. We can have tasteful female secondary leads who are fine with being in a supporting role and don’t want to save them self and will happily let a man do it, and we can have a great middle of girls who enjoy being girly and having someone around, but are capable of doing it all on their own and just are choosing to be feminine through it all. It just needs to be balanced and in Hollywood right now it just plainly isn’t. Everything is about girl bossing and girls are strong and tough and are like guys and we can do it, but we need both. I have been the girl boss most my life. I like to think I am intelligent. I have done most roles in my life taking on a leader ship position and know what to do. I never need to be told how to do it because I was raised, and expected to always know. But now I am in a position that I love, but feel empty. I enjoy my job heavily. I watch children which is always seen as a woman’s job, but I also enjoy being a leader in things as well. I need a solid middle. I can take care of myself, but I don’t have the time to take care of me. Some days I want to just wear dresses and be more feminine, but feel like I am in a position where yes I am doing a “woman’s” job but no one really is letting me relax and do the more feminine things like painting my nails, wearing cute clothes, going shopping, and over all taking care of myself in a more feminine way. It’s like how much can you take you know? Be strong and a girl boss, but be feminine and a damsel. It can be done tastefully but not in a forced way. And on the Snow White thing? Disney needs to just stop making reboots or remakes. If they did it in maybe a sense of how they did the 2015 version of Cinderella then maybe I would like it since Snow White hasn’t always been my favorite Disney princess. You can keep her at the forefront of the story and give her that loving nature and cleaning that most woman when she was created likes to do, but then give her some depth instead of making her a character that she isn’t which is a girlboss it now seems. Disney just needs to stop rebooting their classics and make new movies involving new characters and girly girls and tasteful girl bosses and everything in between. I have ranted way to long 😅 this was a great video, well done ❤ I hope these thoughts make sense.

When it comes to Mario girls you also forget Daisy and Pauline. They also get in danger a lot (especially Pauline, she was based on Ann from King Kong after all), but they are still capable. Daisy doesn't just rely on Luigi all the time, and Pauline holds a position of actual power as a mayor

Wow! I totally didn't see this video when it came out! But I'm glad I found it right now. During my childhood i loved Disney's Snow White from 1937, i've watched it so many times.... but i have to admit: During my teenage years i had my "Snow White is a weak and stupid princess" phase, but nowadays..... I have finally learned to appreciate Snow White from the 1937 movie for who she truly is. She was just a young girl who went through a horrible experience, her stepmother tried to kill her out of pure jealousy, even with all of that, she was still a kind and pure soul who was gentle to all creatures. It makes me mad how people nowadays take "being sweet and kind" as being "weak" if you're a female. By the way, Snow White was saved by 9 men in the movie, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Before I talk about the actual topic, I'm just surprised that you mentioned Making Fiends since I thought I was the only one who remember that. Okay, glad you touched on this topic. I'm kind of on both sides but I mostly agree that they can make a tough Disney princess, but still give her a love interest. Like, I totally agree why people hate the old Snow White movie, no one wants to watch a movie that's older than their grandma! I mean, I can't enjoy something that's nearly 90 years old because what was legal back then isn't legal now, and it's full of weird stereotypes that give me the ick in classic Disney. However, I hate that they're changing Snow White so much by making her a bad*ss girlboss fighter chick, when she doesn't need to be. You mentioned a lot of other animated non-Disney characters (Like, you even mentioned characters from Making Fiends and Clifford the big red dog). The characters who are lovesick and get stuff done, we need more girl characters like them! In Disney, you have Tiana, Rapunzel, and Anna and neither of them get the love they deserve. I love that you mentioned a bunch of non-Disney characters too. I think one lady you forgot to mention is Babette from Raggedy Ann & Andy Musical Adventure. Like, Babette's underrated because she started out as being a total diva who wanted to leave the playroom, then she got kidnapped by the pirate captain and left, then Ann and Andy were surprised to see that she actually fought back and tied up the captain and became captain herself! Best of all, the movie's from 1977 and not a lot of female characters were like Babette! A mix of beautiful, French porcelain doll who's a bit stuck up and a diva, but also can be tough and fight back against her kidnapper! Disney needs to take notes from characters like that! I'm also not saying that Snow white has to be like babette, I just think they need to change the age gap and maybe make her less innocent and childlike. Literally! That's ALL I want them to do for Snow white is age her up to an adult! They can still make her fall in love!

My favorite way of making a strong independent woman character is, taking a woman and giving her some skill that she is the best at in comparison to her peers, then giving her something that she is the worst at compared to her peers. This makes it so others look to her to do what she does best, and she looks to others for help doing what she can't do. It creates a healthy dynamic. This can also be applied to male characters as well.

There's a game that perfectly shows how there will be times when men and women can be independent, times when men will depend on women, times when woman will depend on men and times when both will depend on both and how it's totally okay that men and women are good at different things and that sometimes their abilities might be a problem to be overcome: Fire Boy & Water Girl: > There are levels where both can work independently; > There are levels where Water Girl needs Fire Boy all the time to get her to complete the level, but the opposite is also true. > There are levels where neither of them can finish a level without they helping each other, pushing a button, lever or rock for the other and sometimes they're separated and need to help each other at the same time for things to work; > In levels full of water, Fire Boy struggles a lot and needs help while Water Girl can do it all with ease, but the opposite is also true for levels full of lava; > Specially in the Ice Temple Game, it's shown that Fire Boy can be fast on snow and Ice, making him better for timer buttons, but it also prevents him from going up on diagonal snow/ice and he will get hurt if the ice melts. Water girl won't get hurt if the ice melts and can climb ice/snow, but she'll be very slow while walking on it and will struggle with time. It's okay to have different abilities and they might also be a problem.

And finally, Chloe (Ladybug; pre-season 3, 4, 5) she enjoys wearing makeup and shopping, and there's her crush on Adrien, but when she transforms into Queen Bee, she's a pretty great fighter. I am a writer, making my own book series and all that. One of my biggest concerns is trying to figure out how to write my female protagonists correctly. I never reference or study modern day girl protags for the reasons stated in the video. With a cast of at least 10 major protags, (3 being female.) I get worried when writing the girls as I want to make them not only good characters, but still show the side of girls that ive always seen and loved in all media... before recent years anyway. I am a guy on the autism spectrum, so I worry that I won't be able to write them properly. I dont fully understand girls that much since I've never been around girls much due to homsechool life. That said, I do try my best, and I want to do my best to avoid the modern-day issues that girls have been portrayed with. Either way, I agree with the video points. We need to settle down and remember the great writings from before us for female leads and stories. (Leia, the Original Disney Princesses, Yuna from FFX, Amy Rose, and even Katara from Avatar Last Airbender.) God bless you, and have a great day.

💝👑 Also - OMIGOSH YOU MENTIONED COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG! That's been one of my hyperfixations lately. Um, I don't know if Vin from the Mistborn trilogy counts, but I"d like to mention her. She's the main warrior of her team throughout the series, but she's also involved in a beautiful love story with one of the male protagonists and she likes wearing dresses and looking pretty, even if she doesn't get to do so very often. She's also quite clever with an interesting character arc - really, Mistborn in general was awesome. Ten out of ten, would read again. At least the first era. Then there's Allriane, from the same series. She's your stereotypical dumb blonde who doesn't think about anything except shopping and dresses - until you find out near the end that the "dumb" part was 100% a ruse she was using to get the main characters to underestimate her so she could spy on them. And it worked. Her skill set mostly revolves around twisting people's emotions to get what she wants - she's not much of a fighter, but she's an amazing negotiator. And the part about her loving shopping and dresses was a very real part of her personality. She ends up unofficially married to a diplomat who feels the same way about suits.

I cant find it, but somewhere in the video you said "you are valid." It was intended to go to characters on the softer side with feministic traits who maybe dont want to save themselves all the time and want to he saved, but it resignated with ME at the same time. It felt like the words applied to me, and i was nearly weepy the whole video. This is exactly what i needed to hear.

Although you said no anime I feel a perfect example of capable but weak and needs someone at times would be Touko Nanami from Bloom Into You. She uses the mask of being the perfect person while on the inside needing someone to love and to be herself and be that non perfect person around. I would recommend watching and reading the manga itself one of my favorites.

Two things happening nowadays that I believe may be not allowing female characters to be feminine are: Toxic masculinity expectations got so expected that it's expected even for girls to not show emotions or need help and all that stuff. Hollywood wants the most of money, thus the biggest audience possible, and much of male audience (for some stupid reason) believe that fiction with femininity is something that the male audience won't like. As a man who was into Winx when younger, it makes no sense to me that men and boys are expected to not like feminine stuff. How are we even supposed to like girls and women if that made sense? I didn't like it when the fairies were daydreaming about romance but it doesn't mean I couldn't enjoy the rest of the show.

💝👑Thank you! I agree 💯 Snow White is my first favorite princess. My second and third favorite princesses are Rapunzel and Tiana. The things that Rachel Ziegler says are disgusting and disrespectful. Without Snow White there wouldn't be other princess. There are also people that are literally victim blaming Snow White and that is disgusting! And people also think that she is a bad example and she is not. None of the princesses are. They each have their own lessons to teach people. Sorry for the rant but the way that the Hollywood actresses are talking about the princesses and girls in general recently have really made me angry and I wish Hollywood didn't put down girly girls.

💝👑I still can't deal with this error message in my brain, about what is it with The Tomboy vs. The Girly-girl rivalry narratives(how both women count as internalized misogyny, or I.E. the pick me girl); essentially the main part, the rivalry being a subtext of wealth differences for women, 1 example, that only rich girls could afford to be Girly& the price of "Girly" items (makeup, clothes& hair products, factor in the real life pink tax) backs that up, whereas the Tomboy is portraited as from a blue collar, working class background (that she can't afford to be feminine), &then there's the narrative of when their backgrounds are reversed, basically how only rich/noble women where allowed the privilege to practice masculine "hobbies" (literally having their own bank account, or a job, or just the fact that they were only taught self-defense, which might not have been for their own safety, just because their families thought it would prevent them from being devalued, including fighting in wars)whereas if women wanted to advance in life, they needed to incorporate their femininity, that they somehow made a profit while being constricted (basically treated like, since they gave up on their right to vote, you can expect that they'd turn over other women, just to protect themselves)for it, let alone which woman gets the "preferential treatment"(respected as a human being) is because of some jerk's whims.

I appreciate this video so much. Girls and women characters in media can both be feminine, girly, like fashion, makeup etc while showing a range of emotions and personalities. Another character I feel fits these traits well is Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She's a girl boss and kicks ass but she also needs help, rescuing, and assistance from time to time. In fact she gets a lot of help from her friends, Angel when he was with her, Giles and Xander. it doesn't put the guys down despite Buffy being the main lead...it's girl power done right in my opinion and she still has crushes on boys and falls in love too.. I'd also like to include Captain Janeway from Star Trek Voyager. She's a powerhouse captain in command of a star ship and gets her crew lost in the Delta Quadrant. However what I admire about Janeway is despite her being a tough as nails captain, she isn't afraid to show vulnerability and often leans on Chakotay and Tuvok for advice, friendship, and support. I wish more characters like this existed in media nowadays.. And of course Rapunzel and Eugene in my opinion are the perfect Disney couple who rescues each other and are both super supportive of each other as well. I love this couple to pieces. And Rapunzel is a girly princess but can get stuff done and asks for help from others when needed...same with Eugene except he has Lance and his buddies to help out (if you've seen Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure/Tangled the Series)..

This is the best review by far, talking about the main subject that girls are not weak in being feminine and especially when falling in love. Recent animated films, especially done by my favorite Disney, just are overdoing it with inclusion, politics and thinking girl bosses. I want this idea to be okay and equal, not overpowering and overplayed. And I do love your shout outs, especially for early ones: Princess Peach, Daphene, the three early Disney Princess, and more. I would say the only characters maybe left out were the Dreamworks girls (thinking on them now they do seem a big girl boss here and there but that's a different subject), Lola Bunny (maybe), Barbie done in the early 2000s, and last yet should be best, Smurfette from the early comics and cartoons. And then there are two more examples of perfect love seekers like Queen Margurette (Tall Tales from the Magical Garden of Antoon Kring) and recently Mavka (Mavka and the Forest song). It is also interesting you bring up Peach and Elizabeth Swan. The biggest difference between the Peach we know and the Illumination Peach is how modernized Peach became. Like how she conveniently knows all the marathon and fight skills and yet looks like she never had a track record of getting kidnap. And as for Elizabeth, or more the actress that plays her, let's just say I need to remember this saying: "Ideas that are applaud can come from people who are flawed."

Barbie to this day is one of the few girly franchises that still tries to retain its femininity. Even though there's less focus on the fashion and the dolls are no longer great quality or glamorous. Recently I've seen a bit of a return to the girly thing in barbie dolls, not just the margot robbie movie dolls nut normal ones while not being glamorous, the barbie cartoon media still is dedicated to the femininity and girly stuff.

Dunno if you watched the show, but do you want to know a female character I really respect? Ishizu Ishtar from Yu-Gi-Oh. She's a calm, collected, feminine woman, always wearing long dresses and as we see in flashbacks being a maternal figure to Marik, probably the only one he had. The only physical force she uses is when she Duels. The rest is all careful planning using her foresight from the Millennium Necklace. In fact, it's argued she *can't* solve her problem by physical force and being tough because the enemy she's fighting is her own trauma-broken little brother who she doesn't want to hurt. Yeah, Seto Kaiba put it all together using KaibaCorp's influence and money, but SHE was the one who masterminded Battle City, gave him Obelisk, and encouraged him to find the other two God Cards, all to save her brothers. Then, just to be sure Marik could be saved from himself, she entered Battle City HERSELF in secret, coming within one turn of beating Seto Kaiba, one of the best players of the game, and when she lost, she accepted the loss and placed her TRUST in Yugi and Kaiba to save Marik where she could not. (Relying on others when you fall short is a very brave trait that also gets a lot of flak these days for similar reasons to what you said in the video). After her loss (and during the Virtual World where she stayed on the airship), what is she doing much of the time we see her? Taking care of her comatose older brother Rishid/Odion, when Marik's evil split personality is running rampant on the airship actively trying to kill Rishid/Odion, and would have no qualms about killing her to get to Rishid/Odion. Yu-Gi-Oh gets a good amount of dislike in some circles for having flat female characters, but Ishizu strikes me as a very strong one.

I'm going to be so real as someone who's trans male who has often struggled with feminity because not just because of gender dysphoria but the fact as a whole so much of media wants to weirdly lean away from it, I feel so refreshed when I get to see women just get to be hyper femme or not be a " girlboss " and it's even more sad that the term girlboss as a whole got so misconstrewed because there's nothing wrong with being your own woman but the way the media present it, they act like things of having a man just in a woman's story is the worst thing if the man is in a romance or in some ways has the woman getting into potential feminine traits and it really makes me upset honestly like I'm male, sure, but I love pink, I love sanrio, I enjoy a lot of feminine things and I even draw women in a way that not only reflects a tomboyish or masculine side but a feminine side because so many people bash on a lot of girls like that as if there was something wrong with being in love, being a mom, or being anything that isn't independant when no one is truly someone who's independant and it isn't something that is pushing back women or men really for relying on others or having stories that not only focus on women but men too, it's only a problem if to me, there's an imbalance. I even remember one of the few female / male relationships I have loved is from manifest, a netflix show, with the main character melissa and zeke landon, as well as ben stone and grace stone, it reflects that these people have heterosexual relationships, are independant or strong, but they do desire connect and romance and it isn't wrong to want those kinds of things. it's horrible to me that really if anything women are presented in a way that really goes to show their flaws are worse than a man's like as if there is any sort of way where a woman's flaws and a man's flaws aren't the same like the amount of times people hated mabel from gravity falls, the most I've ever seen a girl in cartoon media get to be hyper feminine annoys me because first of all, she's just a kid, secondly, she can like boys, dress up, be crazy and have fun with her friends, and none of that is wrong and some people need to get out of the mindset that how she acts is annoying when she's acting how any girl at her age with those kinds of fixations would act, I know when I was younger I really had kind of a love for feminity, and seeing the way people treat it in media as a horrible thing really messes with me a lot as someone who struggled with his own gender identity for a really long time til finding myself.

I feel like Hollywood is just following what they think will be a big hit at the box office. Older Hollywood movies will lean hard into having women as a frail, feminine, dependent damsel compared to their masculine, independent, strong husband/boyfriend, and old teen movies especially emphasize teen girls needing a makeover to fit in and attract a boyfriend instead of being an outcast. Now Hollywood has swung hard the other way as audiences want more diverse female characters, but don’t take the time to develop said female characters beyond the surface level demand. Of course there are still some great shows and movies with awesome characters as mentioned in the video that I also appreciate, and I hope to see more of them. But I feel that I’m more likely to get fleshed out characters from individual creators than Hollywood and Disney nowadays. Here’s to hoping regardless.

One thing I like about Elizabeth Swan is her gradual progress in competency. In the first movie, she is completely inexperienced in combat and even when she participates in the final battle, you can clearly tell that she is doing things based on instinct and isn't trained in actual methods of battle. In the second movie however, she has become a much more adept sword fighter and it makes sense because A: She now knows that her life could be constantly in jeopardy so she knows it's better to be prepared. B: Her boyfriend is a skilled and experienced sword fighter so it's natural to assume she learned it from Will. C: The timeskip means it's safe to assume she had a lot of time practicing, even if off-screen.

👑💝(when it comes to pointing out the problems with heteronormativity I'll stick to Mirka Andolfo's comic series Unnatural)although maybe a part of this cycle(ignoring the romance genre to throw more money at comedies or action movies)is including that how its been displayed, is what can feel like problematic gestures, so in a way that's what has probably kept the love bombing trope around, (the, for now people have always been allowed to display their love publicly notion) maybe because that alone was the fantasy, when you think about how emotionally repressed and starved people technically were/are, that than a love bomber just makes them feel anything. Yea, I'm just over thinking about the people that weren't allowed to show their affection in public(just holding hands, that if it didn't get them criticize for it, they were actually arrested for it).
