Even though they are technically better performers, and Patricks voice has improved a lot in technique (and with age), in this performance they are going at it their absolute hardest, really has that punk rockish energy to it. I'm not necessarily saying it's better than them now, but it's really interesting to see how they've evolved since here. Ps Patrick can still sing heaps fucking sick here, it's way more raw and punchy, with the inconsistencies in the vocal techniques he uses it's really cool I think.

they came to Singapore in 07. told myself that they'd be back soon, i can go then. man, was i bloody wrong. go to gigs when you can if these guys don't around often.

Allow me to clear things up for all ya that don't know: Pete says all the time that he never knew how to play the bass. If anything, he's playing notes that Patrick told him to play. Anyone can play a note, but to know what you're playing is the difference between a bass player and someone that plays a bass. Andy's in a box because drums are so fucking loud. If you're in a band, you know how it feels like to be next to a banging drum. The box compresses Andy's drums so the other instruments don't have to raise their volume, so they can hear themselves better, and so Patrick doesn't yell out his vocals. Which brings me to the next point. Patrick's singing is kinda off. I'm not going to lie but it is. There is multiple reasons for it though. My logical guess is that he can barely hear himself. With a bass, drums, and two guitars blasting all at you, it's kinda hard to hear yourself sing. It's like the guy who sings with his headphones on. In his head, he probably sounds like he's hitting all the notes, but in reality he's not. That's why they all wear ear monitors or some sort of device that plays back their music live. I've experienced this before and it's the worst thing a singer can possible have live. He can memorize the feelings of the notes but that isn't always reliable. Joe is Joe and he only has to keep tempo and play guitar. It isn't much so he can focus more on what he's doing.

***** A bass player is someone that know's the way around the fret board of the bass and knows musically what is needed for a song which can include harmonic construction, melodies (Like the intro to this song), and overall tone of the song. Someone who plays bass is just told what to play without any knowledge of what he is playing. Take someone like The Flea from RHCP and compare him to Pete. Both bass players to major bands, but the technique and complexity Flea has is far more better then Pete's. If Pete knew the fret board and what he can do with it, Fall Out Boy would of been a far more diverse band. So where does one graduate from being a bass player? Knowledge.

Zacky Christ but in theory, if you have the knowledge but no skills to play (maybe not being familiar with the fretboard, or just not being as musically inclined as another, or not having lessons, ect), doesn't that make one just as low? it's like when someone's book smart but can't actually apply it. also, i agree with you that pete's really just following what patrick tells him to play, but isn't that how all people learn? all the great artists have their own set of musical inspirations who are just as great, and can probably all recall when they were starting out learning how to play those songs. that would be being told how to play. and for someone like me who can't take lessons and their only option is to learn by example from say the internet or peers, does that make them not a bassist?
