Whittier is where Del Mar grew up, and he remembers running around Uptown Whittier as a kid. When he ditched high school, you would find him spending all day in Uptown Whittier at the bookstore and record store 📚 Music is one of his passions as is evident by his extensive vinyl collection 🎶
Barbering always stood out to Del Mar because you could make an honest living and be yourself 💈 So when he was 19, he went to barber school and he became licensed as a barber 8 years ago.
Del Mar describes Tip Top as a neighborhood barbershop. He has been working at Tip Top since 2017 and is the Shop Manager. His hope is that everyone who comes to the barbershop can relax and forget their worries during their visit, enjoying music and conversations without the distraction of a TV 📺
He truly values the friendships he’s built over the years with patrons, considering many of them like brothers. Del Mar says, "It's really great because it's more than just at a professional sort of level, it comes out of love.” 💈❤️
One memorable moment at the shop was when a gentleman brought in his father for a haircut and shave for his 100th birthday❣️🎉🎂🎊
✨ His life advice? "Try to find what makes you happy." He adds, "We live a short life, and we got to enjoy it while we're here.” ✨
Del Mar feels very fortunate to have found what makes him happy at a young age, knowing early on that barbering was the path he wanted to pursue.
Tip Top Barber Shop was founded in 2012 by Dré Perales who also grew up in Whittier.
After nearly a decade working as a tattoo artist, Dré wanted a change. A conversation with his longtime barber friend led to an invitation to work at his friend's barbershop... and the rest is history! ✨
Dré opened his first shop on Whittier Boulevard in 2012 and a second in Uptown in 2013. By 2015, Dré had started his own pomade company, beginning small and designing products for his shops 💈 His approach was grounded in his passion rather than chasing the market.
As Dré puts it, "When you're passionate about something, people will align with you. If you're chasing the money, you're not aligned with the people; you're aligned with your pockets.”
The style of Tip Top Barber Shop is very influenced by American tattoo art which is what you'll see on the walls. "A lot of this is hand-painted, either by myself or other artists I collect from so 90% of everything in the shop is original," Dré explains.
When it comes to music in the shop, they have everything from The Clash to Willie Nelson. They love it all 🎶
What truly makes Tip Top special is the people who work here 🙌🏼❤️ Dré feels "Everybody here brings something to the table.”

I dropped my cellphone while seating down watching this video, last I remember was the balm and ceremony. Fantastic.
The scents in that post-shave routine must have been amazing. I’ve been watching for a long time, and I have my favorite videos, but for some reason this shop brings back memories of going with my dad to get a haircut as a kid. Not sure why. It’s not really that similar or anything. Just a good one.

I lost two barbers in a short period of time. Both retired in their late 70s. I was with the first one for 24 years. The second one was only for five years. It was hard to find the right barber and I struggled to find the right one for three years after that. I saw close to 20 barbers before finding the right one. Del Mar looks like the kind of barber you would want in the long-term.

Hey Harry, love your videos. They're top notch. A thought occurred to me watching this one. Do you ever shave yourself? If not, that must be nice.
Is there a reason why some barbers don't shave off the bulk of hair with trimmers before going with the razor? Seems like doing that will result in a easier shave.
Looking forward to this now. It was a very relaxing shave. Very professional and thorough. Loving the prints on the wall. Gives the place atmosphere.

The machines for me are very loud to be ASMR i like more some gentle noise, but in overall i like the video
I prefer shaves where the lather is applied by a brush. There's something oddly satisfying about it. However, I understand that regulations in many states restrict or outright prohibit the professional use of shaving brushes for sanitary reasons. For example, applying more lather with a brush when the customer has cuts would contaminate it.
