Ben....we use an old bicycle inner tube...rubber...for our leaders when flyfishing. Simply pull line thru rubber tighty to streth it...done...straight leader...quinn

Ben, thanks for all the resources for you've created that have been so helpful for my learning curve as an apprentice falconer the last two years, up in SW MT. I have lot of family down in Utah area and increasingly spend a lot more time down that way... if the stars ever align, and you ever attend any meets I would love the opportunity to meet you and learn from you in person someday. In the meantime, keep the good stuff coming!

Good evening, Ben. Excellent video, although we are not allowed to catch wild birds of prey in Central Europe. JT

Ben I used this exact method but it seems that the nooses only hold tight with tension on the knot.. if I put my finger in one of the nooses and pull back, it holds, but if I let up on it at all the noose just loosens back open. It seems like this was part of the design the way you explained wanting it to bounce back in place if the knot is bumped, but I am worried the noose won’t hold because of the way it doesn’t actually lock in place like a traditional slip knot does. Any reason in particular this works better than just a simple slip knot that locks in place when tightened?

Thanks for posting this vid Ben, I especially liked the enlarged close-up on how to tie a slip- knot. Very helpful. Btw Ben, I wanted to ask you, In your opinion, do you think a lighter pound 6-7 pound test line would be sufficient weight to trap a Red Tail? Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated 👍. 90% of the time you would probably be fine with 6-7. But then that one time a large female will get caught and might break it. I usually don’t go under 15 if I am going after red tails, just to be safe.

I am intrigued by your mono-filament noose design, but I have done so well with locking leader line, it's hard for me to stray from what has worked so well for me.

Kapok6 nothing wrong with sticking with what works! I always like to try new things out. But then also usually default back to whatever has worked well for me.

How many you put on the trap and what size is the trap

Hi! Great videos! I’m starting the process for becoming a falconer and will start with a Kestrel. I live in Las Vegas, where would you say are good sighting places to spot and hunt for kestrels in this area?

I should add, I've started doing a square knot with one more knot on top, we lost those coops running a square knot, even with the tail.

Ben, how long is the piece of line? Looks like about 12”. I assume the size would vary depending on the bird, I’m thinking red-tailed. Thanks!

A kestrel or red tail hawk as your first bird is still the regulation in oregon.

I'm finding my line isn't holding tight to the cross of the hardware cloth, so the square not loosens, and then the knots fall flat. Is this a fishing line issue?

I’d have to see it in person. But I am guessing that the fist overhand knot of the square knot is probably a little too loose. But it also definitely could be a brand issue. If you have the money I’d get a roll of a different brand and different pound test strength and see if it is different. If you get the same problem, you will know something is wrong with the knot.

Yeah. I'm using the monofilament 10 pound trilene, but it always come lose after that base knot. Can't keep it tight. I saw in your video that yours holds snug when you pulled it. What brand do you use?

Trilene is usually pretty good. I don’t use any specific brand anymore. But the most recent trap by tied up for was with trilene

8:50 the way you give your measurement is like Chinese cooking instructions. there is no unit of measurements; it's just relative to the person's hand.

Could be a hard pill to swallow when those loose knots unwind on a special bird...

@@DC-fo3bn there's nothing wrong with trapping birds of prey. in fact Some studies have shown that out of 100 Red-Tail Hawks hatched 73% die in the first year. Roughly 5% will live to the age of 5 years old in the wild. Clutches are usually 3 eggs, out of which 2 will actually fledge.

So you guys in U.K. have to buy commercially raised birds? Which cost more, imprints/ pinned (soft/hard)? Can you buy "turn-key" birds? Personally I think trapping a haggard gives you a headstart once past manning, gloving, cretance, luring, free flight.😊
