Trapping The Perfect Hawk - Ep. 7

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Our quest continues for the perfect Red-Tailed Hawk. We're most interested in locating a Dark Morph or a Harlan's Hawk which is a subspecies of the Red-Tailed Hawk. Unlike the traditional color pattern of a Red-Tailed Hawk, these birds are much darker in coloration and typically have little to no white in their feathers. These darker birds will migrate down from Canada during the winter months as they search for food and warmer temperatures here in the states.
We're using a Bal-chatri trap with a bait mouse and gerbil as we're targeting passage red-tailed hawks. Both Michael and Ashley are Master Falconers with years of experience with the proper licensing and permits to trap wild birds. Please do not attempt to do any of these activities without the proper experience, equipment, and legal permissions to do so.

You did an amazing job with the trapping, and by far it was the best I've seen from anyone for at least a few years! There is one concept I ponder about. At the 20:50 mark, you were saying that most of these Red Tailed Hawks die in their first year from parasites. I've always thought that starvation was the main reason these hawks don't survive, especially in colder climates where food is scarce. I am glad you did what you could to help these hawks greaten their chances of survival! Even though none of these hawks you showed ended up as a Falconry bird, it does seem like they can hunt very well without any difficulty! I couldn't imagine there would be a need to keep any of them!

Valid reasoning, starvation is a factor, but what is a reason for starvation? Lack of catching enough food, lack of calories from food caught? Calories being depleted by parasites? It all plays together, I like to think I did just enough to help at least one of these magnificent birds to survive this coming winter.

Awesome trapping video. eBird is a great resource for pinning the Harlan’s down. Advanced searches by year/month and rich media (I.e, photos) are super useful. They are incredibly spooky and it’s even noted in the scientific literature. Lots of miles on the truck but we ended up with 3 of them (light, intermediate and dark) by the end of the trip. Saw a bunch of neat-looking adults too and probable intergrades.

I've tried a few different designs (I'm trapping in Northern Utah), and nothing seems to be working. I'm using wild mice that I caught as bait!! • @WildlifeCommandCenter

Related is seems: Hippoboscidae, the louse flies or keds, are obligate parasites of mammals and birds. In this family, the winged species can fly at least reasonably well, though others with vestigial or no wings are flightless and highly apomorphic. As usual in their superfamily Hippoboscoidea, most of the larval development takes place within the mother's body, and pupation occurs almost immediately.[2]
