  • @Lhikan634

    @Lhikan634

    3 жыл бұрын

And that may be part of the problem. It was also Lamar who told John that he always makes the right decisions. We don't get a good look at their history, but it seems fairly obvious from a later statement (that there are situations he can't just punch his way out of - so likely a history of unaddressed anger issues) that John didn't have so great a track record. He's also clearly not exactly well hinged before losing Lamar. John was also abusing his new position as Captain America seemingly not even a week into the position. For his part, Lamar probably did want to be the good friend, but he may have unwittingly been an enabler as well. John really needed someone to call him out before he crossed the line too far (though frankly I've met people with that sort of anger issue, and many of the ones I've been around flat out won't listen to that at all) instead of just reassuring him of his poor decision making skills.

Not a villain, definitely not a hero, definitely an obstacle Sam and Bucky have to overcome, yet he’s a character unto himself and not a one dimensiona antagonist. People are already analyzing him and I’m here for it. Wyatt Russell really knocked it out of the park playing him. I sincerely hope there’s another season on the way because this show is so f***ing good.

the painting at 18:29 is the raft of the medusa by Géricault. It was painted w/o commission after fall of the first Napoleon Empire in 1818. One reason it's considered important is bc it might be the first instance of a painting depicting a contrverisal modern event, rather than a significant historical event. The actual event and painting was considered a major international embarrassment to the French restored Bourbon Monarchy. Maybe the connection to the episode is that John Walker's actions were an embarrassment to the US and an international incident. In this case it was broadcasted by social media, as opposed to the canvas.

I mean remember he was a family man that had his family killed by avengers "shenanigans". Sam and Bucky were a means to an end, there was really no reason to betray them as their agendas were mostly aligned. He was driven mad with anger by this and has since had a singular motive, to rid the world of superheros. He was going to kill himself even when T'challa stopped him in civil war, which is why he seemed so prepared for WS to end him now. She knew what the Tuskegee Airmen were because I had told her the story of them many years ago and we watched the movie “Red Tails”. Because of that, she recognized the patch on his jacket the first time he came in and told him what an honor it was to get to meet one of the surviving Tuskegee Airmen. He was really nice and posed for pictures with her. He really gets around great for someone in their 90s. He still looks in good shape. As far as they look at it, they excelled, even with the disadvantages they got. No one really knew how talented those pilots were until they pushed to get the opportunity to help defend the bombing runs made in WW2 and the Tuskegee pilots did a better job protecting those bombing runs than did any other pilots. Those men are of a completely different class from many of the whiners we see today. Why would he be named the new Captain America without given any advantages over his enemies like a super soldier serum? Something about the way Sam said "Steve is gone" has me thinking that Steve did die in the months between Endgame and this story. Also, note Bucky's "When Steve told me what he was planning...." That confirms a fan theory that Steve had told Bucky about what he was going to do, and that's why Bucky just gave Sam a nod when Steve handed over the shield.

The Painting: The large muted tone painting referenced aside from the Matisse Lady with Umbrella painting is called Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault. It's symbolic of the class divide recalling the true story of the Ship Medusa that crashed, and they tried to make a raft out of the ship. This case caused public outrage because those of higher authority/power/class took the lifeboats while at least 82 workers/lower class (and two women) took the raft. In the end, the captain thought the raft containing the workers were dead weight, and literally cut the ties holding the boats and the raft together. There were records of cannibalism, fights, murders, that happened on the raft, and god knows what else happened considering the two women never survived, and this painting was a portrayal of desperation from a social divide. Actual dead bodies from the Medusa Raft were used as models for the artist to paint, so it captured the stench of death. The painting shows the moment they saw a ship for rescue, but it would later leave their sight for a couple hours before coming back noticing the raft from afar, so you can imagine what would go on in their minds in those couple hours when your one chance of survival doesnt notice your cries for help.

Great stuff. The opening is a direct contrast to The First Avenger when Steve is running after the Hydra agent. All of it is meant to explain that being Captain America has nothing to do with the shield or the suit. It's the person inside. Sam IS Captain America throughout this episode by demonstrating the person that hero needs to be. Like Steve Rogers but as his own man. It's interesting as they're clearly making sure we remember the power of humans (Sam, Zemo, Sharon, Madame Hydra, etc...). Madame Hydra points to the need for Thunderbolts as The Avengers are effectively nowhere to be found and a grave threat will mean more super heroes. With different intentions. But the key to the episode is the writers. They took the legacy of Marvel comics taking on social issues into the MCU. From Tony Starks alcoholism to Hank Pyms marriage to the way Mutants were treated, life in Marvel comics reflected past, present and future of life on earth. It's now the same with the MCU because what Bradley and Sam are talking about is the lack of social justice and continued discrimination that created the Captain America that preceded him. The timeline is clear: Bradley was alive during the Tulsa, Oklahoma massacre so what he is telling Sam is that things never change. Sam does not believe that. The giddy optimism that Tony pointed out about Steve. That Zemo pointed out about Sam. And Bucky knows he sees in Sam what he saw in Steve when he gives him the tough live talk. Great episode.

The painting is called "the Raft of the Medusa", by Theordore Gericault 1819. It is a gigantic work, hangs in the Louvre in real life, and depicts the rescue of French survivors of a shipwreck after almost two weeks afloat at sea, adrift on a small raft, dying, starving, hallucinating, bargaining for life with whatever higher power that would listen etc. The painting is savage in its depictions of human nature in the face of desperation and total despair hinting at mens darkest potentials in the violence, rape, murder and caniballism that has most likely occurred prior to our observation ... Not sure what parallels could be drawn to our protagonists, but I do however see a few direct analogies in the storyline and situation of Carly and the rest of the flag smashers at this point.. Who will rescue them, who will be their inevitable savior>

That is correct, Sebastian. The over-life-size painting that depicts a moment from the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate , which ran aground off the coast of today's Mauritania in July, 1816. In the far distance on the right side of the painting a ship (potential rescue) can be seen on the horizon. Days later, ~147 people were set adrift on a hurriedly constructed raft. All but 15 died in less than 2 weeks prior to their rescue, and the survivors endured severe dehydration and practiced cannibalism to avoid starvation.

I can't believe how good WandaVision & TFWS are. Like, literally in tears thinking about the last 13 years. How the MCU has grown & evolved. (And it keeps getting better!) Feeling so so so very glad that I got to experience Infinity War & Endgame in a packed theater wit cheering, screaming, gasping & crying Marvel fans. Haha Idk when we'll be back to fully packed theaters, but I'm glad I cherished every moment.

If both shows set out to do different things, and both achieve what they set out to do, there really isn't anything to compare to if both are of high quality. This doesn't mean you need to like both shows equally, but that doesn't make 1 objectively better than the other because there is almost nothing that is the same between them. Its the usual apples to oranges thing.

Love these videos! Paintings at Sharon Carter’s place are Raft of the Medusa by Gericault and Woman with a Parasol by Monet. Both French artists, while she talks with Batroc. Raft of Medusa shows people desperately trying to survive after ship running aground- not sure if Carter relates to that theme or if it’s just meant to be a giant, expensive painting.

Dang, it's too difficult to check all the comments first! I did find a great article explaining 'The Raft of the Medusa', though. I don't understand the significance of ' 'Woman with a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son' though -- after the gut-punch of 'The Raft of the Medusa', it seems implausible that it's 'just a painting'.

When Bucky dropped the bloody shield next to Sam, I think it meant more, basically not only that “here this belongs to you”, but also metaphorically suggesting Bucky saying “the blood is on your hands”. Which hits so much harder. Plus also the talk between Sam and Bucky reaffirms this when Bucky is apologizing for his distaste with the whole situation.

  • @Resonosity

Love or hate him, John walker is hurting man. Even though he’s insane, he’s in so much pain. He lost his best friend, but most of all, he just wanted to be a team with Bucky and Sam. And When you hear his scream when his arm is broken, you can hear his pain. Losing his friend, losing his title as Captain America, and losing the team he wanted to have. Having the people he wanted to be his teammates, snap his arm, that shits gotta hurt on a whole other level. Still doesn’t condone what he did, but still goes to show how good of an actor Wyatt Russell is.

I don't actually see him as insane. I see him as in over his head. Suffering from PTSD. And not given all the resources and tools to do the job he was asked to do. So much pressure. Wyatt Russel is going to be a huge star after this, I think. John Walker is an amazing character. Not sure if he'll end up as an anti-hero, or a villain. Either way, one of my favorite new MCU entries in a while.

You name it man. It's just so lazy writing that in the finale he just forgets about all his anger and pain. Karli deserved to die at his hands. Imagine at the end even his wife left him. That man would've literally lost everything while just trying to help and do good. Everything. Just tragic. But noooo he's cool and happy now again...

  • @lyunardo

@@kenostone2122 Interesting, it worked for me. He was in over his head, the situation had gotten out of control, and his best friend had just been killed in Battle. But the person he killed wasn't the killer. He just took his anger out on him, and that has consequences. Plus, he's obviously got some PTSD from those missions that won him all of those medals... But he's not in those situations now. He's still the highly trained, talented soldier. The bad moments will come and go, unless he "does the work" like Sam did. But he can still have good days. And he's still capable of saving lives and doing good. The government throwing him away was wrong, and had to hurt. But another government official is now backing him. He tried to just step in as Cap, and expected seasoned Avengers to be his sidekicks. Of course that got him laughed at. Hopefully, he'll rebound from all that and handle it better this time.

I like to think that the dialogue between Sam and Bucky is meant to convey a collective belief in the idea of America as being a place where a hero can be anyone regardless of skin color, provided the person is genuine in his or her beliefs, morals, actions, etc. If one were to move the "Captain" association to the side and leave the spotlight on "America" for a moment, he or she would see through the optics, via the character Bucky, that Sam is the next perfect American to take the superhero helm. The Captain America shield--which, because of what it's made of, is unbreakable (a symbol of the American spirit)--is a manifestation of all the traits required and that one must also have to be worthy enough to wield it. Now that we know a substantial amount about Sam from past Marvel films, if we compare him with John Walker we can make the determination that John--although a highly decorated soldier and, only recently, has become physically strong--immediately falls short of the moral and emotional standards the shield demands in a culminating scene: when he kills a member of the Flag Smasher (not to mention a member who actually wasn't the one responsible for killing his partner Lamar). Needless to say, a person's skin color isn't even a qualification for a superhero; instead, I think it is all the right characteristics he or she possesses to be that perfect "captain" to be a standout example of "America." I think that is what enables Bucky, at the very least, to solidify even further his faith in Sam when he awakes (which can also be a metaphor to the nation's waking up to existential racism and oppression, which are currently in the conscience of many at present) to Sam's nephews playing with the Captain America shield. And I believe, hopefully, that, among other things, is what the producers of the series are trying to communicate to viewers. I'm enjoying the series so far and looking forward to the remaining episode and what Marvel decides to do next of the trajectory of each character thereafter.
