    Obviously FN tried to push their intermediate cartridge but im pretty sure america whined like a kid for them to use the 308 and then they didn't even adopted the rifle which is a disrespectful move in my opinion, plus now they use 556 and say that rounds like 7,62x51 create too much recoil

    @@olliegoria Except the M16 didn't start that way, there were no rails, no modularity, no fancy sights, and while it was originally reliable the US' initial acceptance came with over 100 modifications mandated by the quartermasters which turned it into an unreliable, user-unfriendly, jamming, misfiring mess in it's early days. After which they proceeded to launch several programs like ACR over the years trying to get rid of the damned thing. Had the FAL been put into service chambered in 5.56 from the beginning and given the years of trial and development the M16 had required to make it what it is today, it would have been at the VERY least on par with, if not significantly better than the M16.

    @@zigzaghyena It was unreliable in the early days because the M16 was fed overpressured ammunition in a sabotage attempt to bring back the M14, that caused the gun to run way too fast and the casings to begin extraction way too early. So if you look at the actual data, almost all failures were failures to extract. It's all detailed in the Congressional investigation. All it really took was a buffer swap to run the overpressured ammunition. Congress found the ammunition switch borderline criminal negligence because the US Army Ordnance Corp KNEW the ammunition would cause jams, as well as no cleaning kits and no training. There is absolutely no way the FAL would have caught up with the M16. The FAL is not modular enough which means it is not friendly enough for easy upgrades. The FAL uses machined steel which is heavier than stamped, and heavier than the M16's hard anodized forged aluminum. This also means the FAL is more susceptible to rust. The FAL uses a tilting bolt which would make it considerably less accurate than the M16's multi lugged rotating bolt. Out of all the big battle rifles (AR-10, G3, M14, FAL), the FAL is the least accurate and has the least use as a marksman rifle because of it. The FAL uses a short stroke gas piston which is more complex than the AR-15's DI system, and would have a more complex disassembly. The FAL is not a sealed design and will die in mud and sand way faster than an M16. The FAL even in 5.56mm will still recoil more than the AR-15 because the gas strike is not inline with the action. The FAL has been in service for longer than the AR-15, yet cannot improve nearly enough to compete because of intrinsic shortcomings, and especially the lack of modularity. Poopoo the AR-15 rifle all you want, there are still nations that are dropping the AK and AR-18 type systems for the AR-15, both in DI and short stroke gas piston. Many nations also are dropping comparative battle rifles out of marksman roles for the AR-10 derivatives. As far as the advanced combat rifles go, almost all of them are dropping out of use back to the AR-15 and AR-10s because even after 50 years, the AR-15 still is a better design.

    I like to imagine the FAL as a proud veteran of its own conflicts. Perhaps not scarred and glorified as the decorated war heroes single out in service, but one of duty, seldom rejoiced by most, but it knows the role it played, the influence it had, the good it did. It served its duty, as much an unsung hero as the nameless soldiers that carried it, even if it never saw a day on the battlefield.

Mine is an L1A1 build (I prefer the folding charging handle and large paddle mag release) and I've upgraded the rear sight to the Canadian flip-up sight that dials from 200 to 600 meters in 100-meter increments. It's truly a damn shame that it didn't make it in .280 British in select-fire. That would have been one incredible weapon!

    I see the FAL in the same light I do the SKS (I'm an SKS nut btw). A wonderful concept hindered by a sudden up and comer and forgotten to history. For the FAL, the AR-15 stole its lime light, and for the SKS, the AK47 ripped away it's chance to be anything more than a second line weapon. Think of it like the old traditional man running in a shooting competition with a 1911 in the mid 80s, but then a 20-something fresh guy rolls in with a first generation Glock 17, gets a time one second faster than the old champion and is recognized in the whole shooting community as a hero, and the old man, who has been winning and performing better than anyone until this young whipper snapper, is just forgotten. I collect SKSs and am modifying one to become a modern patrol/competition worthy rifle, it's a workhorse that deserves more than what it had. It's going great so far, I'm not using any AK or AR essential parts (mags, releases, etc, anything that the weapon could not run without), it is a tried and true modern SKS. Maybe one of these days I'll start collecting FAL variations, maybe choose the cheapest variant to adapt to a modern day combat style and have just a whole stock of them preserved, to be enjoyed until they literally turn to dust. I plan to do the same for the Makarov, Tokarev TT-33, 3-Line Mosin and MP5, among single examples of significant firearms I find desirable. Ahhh, the joys and poverty brought on by being a firearms historian. A most wonderful thing to spend two weeks eating nothing but ramen and canned spaghetti over.

    As patriotic as I am, I have to admit, the US logistics department has an awful track record. Using the Beretta over the 1911, using the Beretta for 30-something years and not switching to Glock right away, using the Krag instead of the Mauser, using a .38 Special over a .45 Long Colt, delaying the use of cartridge repeaters in the Civil War (More thanks to that James Ripley moron than the US as a whole, but it happened multiple times over like 50 years, and instead of firing that f*cking moron, he ended up dying with his job title!), even today with the new rifle trials in wanting to use electronics in modern combat rifles, accepting a bullpup into said trials and demanding a new ammunition type chambered in 6.8 when 6.8 SPC, or 6.5 Creedmore, or 6.5 Grendel fitted onto the M27 upper via a new lower receiver would work AMAZINGLY WELL, not to mention all the weapons have like overcomplicated two stage chambering systems as opposed to the already simple enough one stage chamber system, and this is costing, what, 11,000,000,000 USD and the military even said they might not even use one of the options available!!! Great use of our tax money. The only really good ones I can think of are the adoption of the 1911, the Marines keeping the 1911 (M45 MEUSOC, Colt .45 USMC and M45A1) and the recent adoption of the Sig P320 handgun, because BASED GODS does the P320 have an amazing trigger and a reset so subtle you couldn't find it if you were looking for it!

  • @deanc91

    @deanc91

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@JohnSmith-xv2ob I dunno about this post. The Beretta is by far a better fighting gun than the 1911 by the 80's, and quickly jumping to the glock would force another trial which would have to demand multiple manufacturers to submit for for negligible improvement for a gun that will near never even be used in combat anyways. The M45 the marines used were garbage. Cracked all over the place and suffered a lot of malfunctions. The M45 was a joke that only exists as a service weapon because muh tradition. The M9 was a far superior choice, and the Marines that went to competitions with the M45 were losing terribly to just about anyone else with a modern handgun. I carry a P320 every day but the P320 had issues as well, and a subtle trigger reset isn't exactly a great thing.

    The us army has used foreign weapons, and still uses them today, some imported, some produced locally under liscense, in which case the foreign gun manufacturers still make a profit(beretta 92fs/m9, fn minimi/m249..etc) As for the FAL, it's rejection had nothing to do with its national origin(otherwise I'm pretty sure the AR 10 would have won the trials in 1957), and had more to do with saving money.

    I got a FAL this past year, it is a chunky boy but by no means a bad rifle, I was surprised to learn it had a bolt-hold-open similar to the AR platform. There are also modern production parts that allow conversion to a side-folder stock, as well as a new dust-cover with a picatinny rail for mounting of optics. Unfortunately the only thing I cannot seem to find is a new style of muzzle-brake, the "Belgian" style is the #1 muzzle device on all FAL's to my knowledge with few other options, the 9/16 thread being a tad odd and incompatible with modern .30 caliber muzzle devices. I would love to have a muzzle device to direct more of the gas backwards, to help improve felt recoil / recoil management for myself, as mine has an 18 inch barrel instead of the standard 21 inch. Regardless, it is a unique flavor of firearm that I am happy to have in my collection.
