FAL vs G3 | Fast Reload

Ғылым және технология

A quick comparison of emergency reload time between two legendary battle rifles, the FN FAL and H&K G3
There was 1 bullet in the chamber, after firing i had to change the magazine and chamber a new round before making another shot.
I had problems with both rifles so i suspect the ammo. At the end G3 bolt struck the buffer so hard that rollers opened into the receiver making it unshootable :(

I have used and maintained FAL, L1A1, L2A1 and G3's and provided armorer services for them ( military full auto versions and the commercial ones built from parts). These are a few of my observations for sources of malfunctions on these weapons. The G3's require harder brass cases than FAL's to function properly. I have seen many cases where ammo made to NATO SPEC by one country did not function properly when used in guns from other countries due to propellant, or brass/steel case characteristics. The majority of issues with these weapons were ammo or magazine related or maintenance related mostly bad chambers/rusted or bad gas setting on the FAL and bad headspace. The L1A1 magazines were much superior to the metric version based on the beefed up mag catch. I did a video several years ago on FAL/L1A1 mags if you want more info. With G3 the steel mags feed lips held up much better than the aluminum ones.

Very good observation. G3 had most problems with ammo which was probably on the hot side. This makes sense because the reoler delayed blowback system heavily relies on consistent ammo and works best on lighter loads. As you can see from the video (0:34), one of the rounds was more powerful than others and opened the chamber of the G3 too quickly which sent the bolt back with such force, that it opened the rollers into the receiver bending it. After that it didn't function properly anymore. FAL had less problems with ammo but it was very hard to reload - magazines didn't want to go out or into the magwell quickly. We did a lot of shooting that day and then condensed the problems in this short video, that's why i seems as if the guns didn't function at all. But if i compare it to my AK, which i shoot with for almost 12 years, i had zero malfunctions...

Try out some inch pattern FAL-s - their magazines are superior to the metric ones, and cause much less problems. They are build similar to AK mags, where the front locking lug is a solid chunk of metal welded to the magazine body (not like with the metric mags where it's a peace of sheet metal magazine body that was cut and bended outwards). The floor plate of the inch pattern mag is also build more similar to the of an AK mag and withstands more abuse (like falling to the ground). The sheet metal is also a bit thicker.And... Inch pattern FAL-s accept both types of mags, where metric FAL-s accept only metric mags.Greets from Poland.

Both the G3 and the Fal are in general very reliable platforms in my experience. For you to be having problems like that is most likely ammo related. But there can always be other aspects whether not properly maintained and cleaned rifles after shooting very dirty ammo, and many other things. I prefer and own a G3, but it's all preference. I find neither as fast to load as other systems like the M16 variables and newer systems like the Scars, but the G3 and FAL are great rifle just the same. And practice and knowledge of how to run them well is a valuable asset.

  • @PolenarTactical

    @PolenarTactical

Yes, it was definitely ammo related. To be honest, initially i prefered the G3 because of iconic looks but more that i shoot both, the more i prefer the FAL The adjustable gas system makes it softer recoiling and more pleasant to shoot. Both rifles are very similar in accuracy but bolt catch and release button on the FAL makes is easier to operate

I mean if you are talking battle rifles than M16 variants aren't what should be mentions, AR10 is what would be the Armalite platform in that class of firearm. You are also talking about old technology, that's why some of the stuff comes up lacking compared to modern firearms. Actually if you wanted the best battle rifle it is still the FG42 to this day, nothing else even comes close to the lack of recoil ... say the scar but who wants to break their stock by barley bumping it against a balloon? Scar might take that crown one day as FN finally getting off their butts and fixing it. Tbh who knows, maybe 6.8 will make this class of firearm irrelevant, tbh I wanna see a modern FG42 with Sig reciprocating barrel in .338 lap.

Check out ForgottenWeapons and InRangeTV to see the mudtest/history and operational history differences between the two. The M14 was good for its time, but quickly became obsolete due to its degredation in accuracy and low tolerances for mud and ingress. As opposed, the FAL is slightly tougher on tolerances and ingress of dirt and mud and slightly more accurate. There's a reason why the FAL was called the Right Hand of the Free World :)

I can’t speak about G3s, but I have two FALs and the round jumping out at 1:12 in your vid happens to me a lot. The springs in many FAL mags are weak. When a FAL works, it’s great but these mags can turn a great rifle into an expensive club.

I've worked with G-3's for 17 years, never seen one sticking the bolt back. There are only 3 possible reasons for that: 1- really bad ammo; 2- overused recoil spring; 3- weapon not properly cleaned. You are more likely to have a malfunction due to a bad magazine than bolt problems.

Its fun to do, but the FAL is a very special gun, not develop for fast reloads its like a mix from a AR(M4) and AK but more usefull as a sniper rifle 500 or 600 yards depence of the shooter.. When I was in the army (Greece) I never once saw a G3 rifle jam. And this video is the first time I see a bullet explode in the chamber. My guess is that the ammunition used was of (very) low quality. I would also investigate the quality of the weapon used in the video, but my buest guess is with the ammunition. Anyway, I have my objections about the relaoding procedure. With the G3 you must, I repeat, you MUST hit the magazine on its base after you have inserted in, to make sure that it locks in place. You cannot assume that the magazine has locked in position, because a very large amount of magazines will not lock just by being placed in the slot. This adds at least a whole second in the procedure.

Also with one of my magazines if I load it less then 5 rounds the top round always has a tendency to pop out when I load it into the rifle. To comment on both the FAL and G3 they strike hard and seem to prefer harder nato spec primers. I’ve had soft primers and steel case primers blow out also.

It's easier and faster to do an AK-like reload if you use your right index finger to press the mag release instead of using the mag itself to do it. Also, some FAL magazines are drop free because of usage, if they are used enough you can reload even faster.

Love this. No reason newer firearms to not have bolt releases. If only modern battle rifles like the scar were cheaper because it's way ahead of the g3 and fal in terms of ergonomics.

I used to use FAL in Brazilian Marines, most powerful and confident primary weapon. Even in jungle or urban scenarios are great. FAL still standard rifle in Brazilian military and some law enforcers. IA2 Rifle continue replacing FAL in the military and all FAL are going to Police in Rio de Janeiro and border police.

If the g3 doesn't go fully into battery cause it's sticky, didn't slap the handle or the charging was for some other reason weak slam the butt in the ground with the barrel looking straight up. This was a remediation drill taught to us in the army, an army which still uses this old German uncle of a gun :D. (Of course this is an emergency drill, a more silent but harder move is to press your thumb firmly against the bolt showing through the port and squeeze moving it towards the barrel a bit, won't work if overly oily).
