"Fake" vs. authentic Laguiole knife comparison

Музыка

My introduction to Laguiole knives came when I purchased what turned out to be two "fake" Laguiole knives. It took me a while to figure out that they were cheap knock-offs though as the information needed to tell knock-offs from authentic knives is spread across the internet. Hopefully this video will help others make the distinction more easily.
My authentic knife was created by Fontinelle Pataud: www.fontinelle-pataud.com/en
NOTE: I describe the famous Laguiole symbol as a FLY when it fact it's actually a BEE. So take what I say in the video and reverse it :)

I have a few Laguioles, though none ‘real’ I imagine. Copies most likely. I love that one you show here. It’s a more faithful representation of the traditional Laguiole. Thanks for the video. 👍🇬🇧

The village of Laguiole is in Midi-Pyrénées (Occitanie) but Thiers is in Auvergne (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). So in fact it's not exactly the same region. There's a french society called "Pradel-France" located in the north of the country and producing cooking tools, but I think that "Pradel-Auvergne" is more a fake company than anything else. Thx for the video and congratulation for your Fontenille Pataud, very nice knife.

No, it's not a fly. It is indeed meant to be a bee. The reason it is often referred to as a fly is because that is the purpose it is serving. In France at least, the name for the broadened end of a slipjoint spring is a 'fly'. In a Laguiole, the 'fly' is in the shape of a bee. One other small thing. I have a very high quality Laguiole purchased in Paris in 1999, which has no christian cross and has the 'fly' welded to the spring. Go figure. I enjoyed your video very much. Thank you.

Awesome content overall 👏 I'm South African too.. Into knives too and i really digg the other content on your page..nostalgic and pure.. I have a Lagoiule style knife in Damascus steel, brass bolsters and Buffalo horn handles scales Awesome knife made by Inyhati knives. Does the fly get glued on on the backspring? From my understanding authentic Lagoiule knives the bee or fly gis a one piece with the backspring of the knife.

Thanks for the comments. You get it :) Yeah, in authentic ones, the bee is carved from the backspring itself. In cheaper ones, it's soldered/welded on afterwards.

The Fontinelle Pataud "Nature" knife? Their design introduces a few innovations on the classic Laguiole design including a locking mechanisms that you release by pushing down on the metal piece at the end of the knife. See here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZOJp6uYorvNmbw.html

You should have stuck with an Okapi knife. I don’t see a lot of difference in these fakes.
