An exquisite traditionally French knife. The Laguiole, by Laguiole Le Fidele.

Bonjour, mes amis! Today, I will be discussing a legendary classic from the French countryside, the Laguiole. The Laguiole is a timeless piece of cutlery that originated as a shepherd's tool around 200 years ago. Over the ages, it became popular with the aristocracy and nobility, which led to it evolving into a piece more at home in a regal dining hall than a thatched barn! The knife has had many myths and legends surrounding it. Many include Napoleon Bonaparte as a central figure in the Laguiole's growth and popularity. Today, the Laguiole is famed for it's undoubtable class and ethereal beauty. It is rare for a traditional knife to last well into the 21st century, yet the Laguiole has not only done so, but has arguably become even more popular than it was back in the 1800s!
Made in France by Laguiole Le Fidele, this knife features a 12c27 Sandvik clip-point (Yatagan) style blade. Polished Ebony wood handles. Brass pins, linings and bolsters. A stainless steel spring with a welded-on bee emblem. And an embellished 'Guillochage' (File-worked) spring, blade and bee. The knife can be purchased with a hand-stiched brown, leather sheath, which holds the same bee emblem as the knife itself.
It can be purchased in various French cutlery shops, however, I acquired mine at Lee Valley Tools.

I Love my Laguiole En Aubrac, very exquisite and a bit pricey, but I Love It! Mine has Horn Tips. I got a certificate that it was made in the Village of Laguiole, but these days you never know.

I've been wanting to get a knife from them, but have just been putting priorities eslewhere. They're indeed pricey, aren't they? 😅 As for whether or not they are made in Laguiole, I'll have to do some research on that. I was under the impression they were based in Thiers, but I suppose I could be wrong... Either way, enjoy your knife, it sounds lovely! Cheers!

It's both a bee and a fly. The flattened end of the backspring is called the 'mouche' or 'fly' in English. In this case the 'fly' is in the shape of a bee. The connection with Napoleon is more to do with the blade than the bee. The most underrated and overlooked part of the Laguiole for me is the 'forced notch' system of opening and closing which gives more secure use. I bought a quality Laguiole from a little knife shop in Paris in 1999. Welded fly and no shepherds cross. Things have moved on of course and you have to commend the French folding knife industry for the way they have structured and marketed themselves in order to survive. I sorely wish us Brits would. I think the next evolution for the French and something you mention a lack of, is the introduction of the stop pin, which is already appearing in some of the higher end knives I believe.

I suppose I should've mentioned the "notch". I have a Cudeman with that same style of design. As for the mouche, I had heard the term but always forgot to mention it! Thanks again for the insightful comment, Ian, as always. Cheers!

@@TheKnifeRaven That's interesting. Can you remember the particular name of the Cudeman you refer to? I see there's a few on their site.

@@ianrosie4431KZread didn't notify me about this reply, but the knife was a "Vendetta Stiletto" Slipjoint with the notch. Cheers!

@@TheKnifeRaven Ah! Thanks. I'm trying very hard not to buy a Neptunia Dorry at the moment. Another knife with a 'forced notch', but a bit overpriced for me.
